What's Twitter?

On a sidenote, Steve buscemi's gotta be real. He's the fucking best.

Seth Rogen & Paul Rudd need to work on their Twitter game:lol They ask the dumbest questions.

And what about the people who don't Twitter about themselves?:lol People have such a narrowminded view of it's capabilities, it always comes back to some sort of generic, inane "Here's what I'm doing this very second" Twitter-er that in all actuality would never have any followers because that's annoying and useless as shit.:lol

Shit like this would be hilarious if it weren't so wrong.

I hope you don't use any other social networks because, if anything, they're all based on revealing who you are. Facebook has status updates, posts news about what events you're attending, what groups you're a part of, what music you listen to, what shows you watch, who you are, etc.

Saying people who use twitter struggle from a lack of personal identity is reductive at best

Seriously, I think half the people who bitch about twitter probably base their entire opinion off the Penny Arcade comic strip about it. The claim is the equivalent of saying anyone who tells anyone about who they are struggles from a lack of personal identity.

The constant need of confirmation from people does hint at a shaky sense of identity.

If you twitter and dont give a fuck about what people think about your twitter then yeah, there's no problems.

Some of you seem to think that detractors are saying Twitter is the problem, which isn't the case.

The problem is the recent development of the need to mention it at every fucking opportunity. Whose dick did the Twitter creator suck to get this coverage? I don't remember hearing this much shit about Myspace/Facebook.

Hey, hey, do you know I exist? I still exist! Do you still know? How about now? Now? I'm still existing here.

Why in the fuck is the news covering who is using this service?

i dont understand it whats all this @ stuff about? its like one or two random thoughts interspersed with 1000 non-sequitur @Aeojfoewfj posts that make no sense. how does the person its directed @ even see it without constantly checking all their friends pages?! its like 'comment on this' in facebook but backwards

IT MAKES NO SENSE

It's fucking retarded. The fact that politicians were tweeting during the inaugural address sickened me.

That's not even the worst part. I feel sad with teachers who have to try 'n' teach kids while they are distracted constantly by their cell phone.}

It may be a great tool, but it's getting abused by ADD attention addicts.

Twitter is different from social networks in that it takes the connected concept and takes it to the extreme.

Comparing it to myspace is stupid. Myspace has many, many other aspects apart from blurbs. Now comparing it to myspace status updates is more accurate. How interesting would an entire service based on those updates be? Oh wait, that's twitter.

Exactly!

Sounds more like texting than specifically Twitter. (And really what's Twitter being used for by most people other than a public display of text messages?)

There's a page to see just @replies directed to you. (And if you use a client, it's even easier to see them. Since they are often pop-up/highlighted/etc.)

Fuck cell phones.
Fuck them so hard! I hate having a cell phone :(. Sometimes I don't want to be contacted and if I don't answer the phone don't get mad at me when you talk to me next. FUCK YOU. Also, you're being rude when you constantly check your phone and send messages when you are with someone. RUDE.

EDIT: AHHHHH I just saw "Tweet now" on the weather channel. Asking the viewers to tweet about their most feared weather hazard. ARE YOU SERIOUS?

How the hell does it take it to the extreme? Taking Facebook and stripping it down to nothing but status updates isn't taking anything to the extreme. In fact, it's stripping most of the interconnectedness out - no event updates, no group updates, no seeing who did what to who with which app, no profile, no 'about me', nothing. If your friends on twitter are a bunch of people who update every 5 minutes with the most mundane information then that's a problem with your friends because they'd likely be doing that - and more - on facebook.

Comparing it to myspace is stupid. Myspace has many, many other aspects apart from blurbs. Now comparing it to myspace status updates is more accurate. How interesting would an entire service based on those updates be? Oh wait, that's twitter.

You completely missed my point. A few of you are arguing that utilizing twitter is a reflection of one's desire to create a personal identity. What you're ignoring is that if this is true, myspace caters itself more to that idea - it lets you create custom pages, it lets you add videos of your interests, add photos of your interests, create blogs, etc. If having all those extra features isn't a greater sign that you're trying to solidify your identity and scream it to the world, I don't know what is.

If you don't like twitter, fine. But acting like twitter is for people who are vainly trying to express themselves one moment, and then updating your status and who your favorite musicians are on Facebook the next is hypocritical.

I'm on Twitter. I'm a semi-recent convert to the concept. Joined in late November or early December. I was not sold on it, and started using it very reluctantly after friends urged me too. I can honestly say that it is every bit as dumb as I expected and it is every bit as awesome as they told me.

The Twitter experience comes down to who you follow and what you're looking to get out of it. Personally, I almost never tweet about myself personally. I use it as a tool to spread the word about my blog and some other writing that I do, amongst other things. I did tweet a few personal things over the weekend, but in a context that people who follow my feed would probably be interested in or relate to.

The feeds I follow range from awesome to very lame. I get a ton of information from the Twitter, but I also get a ton of stupid stuff I don't need, mostly from a friend or two who do think they need to tell us all what they're up to at any given moment. Unfollow those feeds and move on if they annoy you. Use the service if you see value, or don't if it's not your thing.

I admit that it's a great tool. Myspace and Facebook started out as good tools. The bolded becoming the more prevelant is what has me worried.

I think the people who quoted "I pretty much agree with him" didn't see the irony in him 'following' his entire opinion while the person he quoted was going on about the individuality of personality? :lol

I might have gotten that completely wrong though.
