G.A.M.E. event in San Francisco this weekend

just a heads up to you bay area people, or anyone interested. there's another gaming event happening today through sunday in San Francisco. it's called "G.A.M.E." in my opinion, another lame attempt to oversaturate gaming culture into the mainstream.

some notable game appearances will be happening such as the new zelda and a bunch of 360 shit.

check out the link here:

costs $20 bucks if you didn't register. i'm gonna try it out tomorrow. maybe i'll post some pics of this. btw, location is moscone center.

I'll be there tonight to catch Lyrics Born and tomorrow because a friend of mine wants to go.

This will be the only time in the past 5 years I've been at the Moscone Center for something other than Mac World.

$20 doesn't seem worth it for what's basically looking to be the poor man's E3. What's sad is that if I just slum around the office a bit, I could probably find a free ticket or two.

You think the version of LOZ:TP that is playable there is an updated version, or just the E3 demo again?

E3 demo. If it was new, Nintendo would have wasted no time in mentioning it.

I just got back and it was pretty much a yawn fest.

They gave away copies of The Matrix Online in Kameo bags though, if that's worth any thing.

I'm returning in a bit to go see Lyrics Born and then heading home.

Lyrics Born was amazing. Even though he had to perform for some 80 odd gamers who probably had no idea who he was, nor did they enjoy hip-hop music (Crowd was completely dead) but he worked that shit. And he worked it well.

I played a bunch of DOA4 and it was everything I wanted it to be. Practically everyone I touched played like brand new (Especially Zack, Christie and Hitomi). Elliot is very interesting, Lisa is insane to watch and Christie is officially the hottest chick in DOA.

It's all about the hips.

lol, I knew it would turn out this way. I'm glad I didn't go, it never works when you try to combing music, "celebrities" and games in a single venue that is not specifically coordinated.

okay, so i went... unfortunately didn't take any pics because they didn't allow cameras. fuck. won a quake shirt in makeshift tourney at the best buy booth. got interviewed by kevin pereira of g4tv. ummm, got to watch some people get their asses handed to them by some quake chick named Kornelia.

other than that, the floor was shitty. none, absolutely none of the x360s on the show floor were running in HD. the only exception being the best buy booths and some other sponsor booths. everything was SD. horrible showing.

the new d&d rpg looked sweet, so did zelda although a bunch of people were crowding the small ass 17" screen it was on. doa4 looked like doa 3.5 on the SD screens. ended up only staying for 4 hours. didn't even get good freebies. definitely needs more sponsorship. wouldn't say i got my $20 bucks worth, though they included a free copy of matrix online with a 30-day subscription and a free kameo handbag along with a 360 neckpiece.

overall, okay. could have been so much more.

People liked my description - "There's a lot of stuff going on and nothing to do." The most enjoyable part besides running into a handful of people I hadn't seen in a while was seeing "Grandma's Boy". I enjoyed it and expect it to be quoted quite frequently in here once it hits theaters in January.

There's talk of this being a travelling roadshow. I think that might hurt the show, but we'll see.

i forgot to add. lyrics born is sick. one of the dopest emcees out of the quannum projects. not a bad singing voice either.

Very encouraging.... More DOA4 impressions, please...thank you.

Awesome, thanks, good to hear, but... tell us in more detail about your swag!

aside from the kameo handbag and matrix online freebies.... other notables were a chun-li figurine that has detachable parts, a 2k sports soundtrack mix cd, a pressed-on-the-spot g4tv shirt, a quake shirt that i won in a small tournament (pwn3d 3 other dudes), free alabtross 18 pc game, a jinx keychain, some soundtrack from an n-gage game, java keycard that makes funny noises, and, well... nothing else worth noting.

this does not even come remotely close to touching E3. but hey, free shit is free shit. can't complain.

quick thing i wanted to note.... hayabusa has a new, insanely morbid, out of this world demon-like costume that rocks ass.

I'm going to have an article available about G.A.M.E. in a moment, and a preview of DOA4 very soon. :D

Edit: Done :)
You mention being at E3 in your article, but you didn't mention if you ever went to any of the other shows you mentioned - IGN's, PAX, Tokyo Game Show, Games Convention, etc. Have you? Have you been involved in any stages of any convention/expo? (basically, seen/know how things run) Just curious.

They did attract a lot of people, the attendance numbers seemed good, so that shows there's a market in this area for a well done show. We'll have to see how things are next year and how they stack up against a full show in the bay area...

I think I saw someone involved in the show setup/teardown company brag to his coworker how easy it was to steal a 360 controller. He pulled it out of his bag just enough to show his friend.

I didn't see the Prize Booth Babes anywhere, but there were 2-3 really cute ones (the half-asian chick from the G4 booth and the blonde giving away stuff for Grandma's Boy come to mind).

(Do you remember when Ultimate Gamer Expo had less content than this and was guaranteeing over 100k attendees to exhibitors - when E3 at the time only had around 65k - and their final exhibitor list included Wienerschnitzel, Seven Jeans, and Oakley? Because when I think of Video Games, the first thing that comes to mind is hot dogs, obviously. :lol )

I got most of the freebies from the Tylenol booth. They gave away water bottles, t-shirts, pill-shaped stress balls and earplugs.

I admit I didn't go to PAX, TGS, or CES....But I only mentioned them briefly, and stopped right there. I wasn't trying hard, but those names came to mind when writing this.

Oh, they did. Yes they did....but as I inferred, not "enough" people went. Was what I was trying to say. I was trying to say "they did attract the casual crowd, and a diversity" but not enough. You see what I mean? I said earlier in the article that the center is bigger than the show itself. I bet the guys managing the Mascone Center expected more from this "experience." Since gaming is big business right now.

WHOA! Shit. I hope he gets fucking arrested.

While I did see those girls, I think those two are the "GAMEgirls" that they mentioned on their site. At least that's what I thought.

Bump.

Someone claims to have won an Xbox 360 at the show. I call fucking bullshit.

About the distractions such as music and stuff, the music there SUCKS. There are some really good things about G.A.M.E. such as all the free stuff, personally I won $55 in gift certificates to Best Buy just for playing games, in total I'm sure I accumulated over $455 in prizes at this event, and I also bagged a free XBox 360 just for watching a movie called Grandma's Boy, which I will describe later. There are many things to do, there are free massages, there is a virtual shooting range, and ther is this one place run by Best Buy were you het to sit in very comfortable chairs and play games like Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, James Bond 007 (lame), Quake 4, Gun, and Tony Hawk, not to mention you play all those games on 37-40 inch plasma tvs.

I blogged about the event this morning, but it's more or less me ranting about emo gamers who refuse to show emotion.
Hey!

*points* I think I just realized I met you there!

DOA4. Leather Jacket.

Glad some of you showed up and enjoyed it. It was the first time we'd ever done anything like that, so we'll only get better if we get another shot at it, which it sounds like we probably will judging by the generally positive response (though the dust is still settling). Comparisons to E3 seem a little unfair seeing as G.A.M.E. is intended for the public whereas E3 isn't easy for a non-industry person to get into anymore. Anyway, we've got a laundrylist of things we'll improve for next time, but I got the impression that the typical attendee had a lot of fun, which is ultimately the most important thing from my perspective. If I had no connection to the industry, I would have gotten my money's worth from DOA4 and Zelda alone (I really liked DOA4, which I played for the first time at the event), but there was plenty of other good stuff as well. And it just warmed my heart to see my copy of Lords of Thunder getting so much play--one guy played it for like three hours on Friday. Plus some dude rushed through all of Super Metroid with 77 percent completion and then came back the next day and played it some more. Whole thing suddenly felt overwhelmingly worth the effort when I saw that. For the musical acts, Hieroglyphics was the highlight for me, especially since they were talking video game music up on our stage like two hours before their set. So yeah, real interesting weekend for me, that's for sure.

I stopped by on Saturday. The show really sucked compared to E3. Played DOA4 briefly, wasn't to differnt from the past iterations. Visually it was really underwhelming. I got to play Zelda E3 demo though with no wait which was pretty cool. Oh and Mario Strikers is a lot of fun.

Someone who works at the CH over on Market who I'm working on a website for. :D

I have more pics (and memorable stories), but you'd have to ask for them on IRC.

...and I have Nautica Thorn to thank for it. (who would ever expect THAT phrase to be uttered by anyone? :))
