State lawmakers approved legislation Thursday night naming the “adoptable dog” as the state dog of Georgia.

But the feel-good legislation was not without some pushback.

Having a dog of of an unknown breed as the official state canine is a “disgrace,” said Sen. Bill Heath, R-Bremen.

Sen. Ellis Black, R-Valdosta, echoed Heath’s opposition to bestowing the state honor on a dog from the pound. “You’re going to have people who are going to use this against the state of Georgia,” he said.

The adoptable dog is officially Georgia’s state dog. State Representative Joe Wilkinson (R-Atlanta) announces Thursday Governor Nathan Deal has signed a bill into law that promotes animal rescue in Georgia.

Wilkinson says by naming the adoptable dog as the official state dog of Georgia, the bill, known as Senate Bill 168, promotes animal rescue and adoption throughout the state, as well as responsible pet ownership including the spay and neuter of dogs and cats.

I lol'd at "disgrace" and "You're going to have people who will use this against the state of Georgia."

Good for the governor.

the state senator from Valdosta is upset because his community is widely known for inbreeding and they feel left out

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Its a bit of an odd choice but I think the heart's in the right place. I think instead of adoptable dog I would have choosen "mutt" or maybe a less blunt name, mixed breed dog?

Deal does something decent for a change and gets shit on for it? lol

Rescuing animals is a good thing to do if you want to get a pet. Lots of animals out there need a home

Nathan Deal's been a pleasant surprise lately.

First he vetoes the religious liberty bill and now this

Someone please post an example of how I can use this against Georgia.

When they're sending the country a message that dogs from everywhere will be accepted, other states are going to take advantage of that. When other states sends their adoptable dogs, they're not sending their best. They're sending dogs that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing rabies. They're bringing worms. They're three legged. And some, I assume, are good dogs.

Nathan Deal is one of the reasons why I can't just go on a blanket tirade against Georgia leadership just for being a Republican. I naturally don't agree with him on everything, but he is not an obvious cartoon villain and pushes for some good things.

Fantastic.

Why would anyone be against this? Your essentially saying "all dogs" are the state dog, be it from adoption agencies or rescues.

Uga might have something to do with the outrage, I'm guessing.

Athens, GA is solidly in the heart of the state and yet, east to west and north to south, you see nothing but giant G's everywhere. Including Atlanta, where Georgia Tech actually is...

But this "outrage" is pretty stupid.

This is idiotic on both sides. My personal State Bird is "pretty birds" and my State Motto is "inspiring quotes."

The "state's _____" in general is an idiotic concept, unless we're talkign of flags, mottos or shields.

It's like whatever state it was that designated a "state's official Riffle". Stupid.

"Disgrace" is a pretty strong word for something as harmless as this. But they represent Bremen, which isn't surprising.

What are you even talking about here? Is there some evidence that a bunch of UGA fans are whining about the bulldog not being chosen? And if by "heart of the state" you mean two and a half hours north of it, then sure.

Well, no, but we will use the fact that they elected Ellis Black's stupid ass to office against the state of Georgia.

It seriously feels like Republicans are so stereotypically "evil" whenever I read stories like this.

EDIT: Due to the opposition, I mean.
