GAF <3's katamari -the thread-

Damn. I don't suppose there's a guide for finding all the cousins yet, huh? :(

I've been working through them all, if you need help with any in particular I can probably help you out!

Also, that stuff about needing to play as the previously-found cousin is untrue, as far as I can tell. I just played a level for the second time with the previously-found cousin, and found a new cousin on the level. So I quit out of the level and started the level again with a completely random cousin, and the new cousin was still in exactly the same place.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to roll up the King and Queen, as there are entries for both of them in the collection. You probably need to unlock endless mode to do that, though.

And as for the music.. the renamed rip with 11 cut scene tracks added is being upped to a server now. :)

Just wanted to say The Race is my favourite so far.
The only criticism I have of the game is the loading mid-level. Everything else is perfect.

Loading? You mean the second-long screen transitions in the school levels for example?

I think he's referring to certain (larger) levels, where the action stops and the king talks for a bit, and you can't immediately skip it. I think it only happens on the occasions where he shows you that you're big enough to go through the gates that you have to be a certin size to go over. I'm assuming it's because you're that big now, and the game needs to load the next "size" up basically. It's mildly annoying, but not a big deal.

And yeah, the extra postgame content sounds nice, but I'll wait for a guide on getting all the cousins before going back; I've seen a few people say that no levels indicate that they're missing any cousins, but they're still a few short.

Oh yeah, that's right. Never thought of it as loading, since the game never loaded in-game apart from those occasions. I thought it was just one of those times of lazy programming/game design. And I agree it's not much of a big deal since it doesn't happen very often and the loading isn't that long...

In one of the Katamari trailers I thought I saw a Katamari over 2000m, so either that was a pre-release screen, or you can unlock Eternal.

How does the light on the phone strap work? Do you have to use some speciffic phone?

Your phone has to operate on a high enough MHz range, and be within 30cm of the phone. Both my wife and I have 3G phones from au (I have the W21SA and she has the W31S) and the little guy lights up just fine for both of them.

Yeah it's not a huge deal, but it wasn't present in the first game at all. At least it doesn't have to reload old stuff because you don't get smaller :)

Is there any word directly from a mod if a rip link would be allowed? I have access to the complete 52 track rip (thanks to bobby, and another ripper and editor from GFF), I could up it somewhere and link it, but that's apparently a no here?

Everlasting Love is awesome (listening to it right now). I also like Robo Prince, Royal Academy of Katamari, and a few others I can't think of the titles of atm. A lot of the music isn't quite up to par with the first game's, but several of the tracks are very good. The majority of the soundtrack is starting to really grow on me though.

Edit: The rip is still lacking artist tags I believe though. The ending credits has that info for many of the tracks, when I get a chance I'll re-beat it to get that info, but that might be a couple days honestly.

My big faves are Tsuyogari Damashii and King of King no Uta. I've had Tsuyogari stuck in my head SO bad all day long, not to mention Kurukuru Rock, which is actually really starting to grow on me rather than just piss me off.

About the rip - I put up a version of it earlier today, when I wasn't sure whether the original ripper was going to re-release it himself with the added tracks and title info. Since he has, I'm going to stop linking people to it to avoid double-rip confusion.

im kind of a mini kirinji fan(tsuyogari damashii) so if you want any of their mp3s i got em

That's awesome, I'll get back to you on that. :D

I'm having trouble understanding again, though. I've been trying to do like sp0rsk said and beat the alternate versions of the stages, but after I do I don't get to select which version I want to play? Do I have to do them all or something first, or am I missing on something on how to choose between the two? I'd really like to play the Zoo level without the obnoxious 50 item limit for example. :(

How do you know when to visit the black dog stage? It seems there's not much else for me to do and my constellation is already pretty full up?

Oh - and where's this mystical soundtrack link?!

Hmm, is that gonna work with one of SE's older phones like T610 or Z200?

I believe you get a message in the middle of the screen when you're ready for the black dog. Walk around the screens checking every person to see if you've missed someone. It's what I did and I had somehow managed to miss like 2-3 stages completely.

I figured out my last post too. I was simply looking at the wrong stages or something. Speaking of, I'm having trouble finding the cousin in the baby's stage. I can find a white one that I've already gotten (on another stage) on top of a parasol on the ice island thing but I can't find the one I'm supposed to find. :(

I'll see your Blue Orb and raise you a LOVE & PEACE & KATAMARI DAMACY (and by extension the Stage Clear blurb), which might have even eclipsed anything on the original OST were it not so tragically short. If that's not the music that's playing as I move toward the light and blip out of existance entirely, I'm gonna be so crazy disappointed.

Also, in the right mood Starlight Jamboree gives me goosebumps, and honorable mention to Do Re Mi Katamarido.

I don't suppose we'll have a full composer list until the OST drops, will we. Blue Orb is the only one that strikes me as overtly Yu Miyake-y, but I'd like to see if he had any other hands in it.

edit: oops, I see that was an answer and not a shout-out. my points still stand.

I need to see a video of the Zoo level and hear the level music, NOW! Where can I see it?! oh teh nooows!1!

Ehm, pretty please? ^___^

Okay, I can't stop laughing at
the king's pronunciation in the ending credits roll. He sounds like a vowel-shifted American enthusiastically manhandling the Japanese language, and it's too ridiculously awesome. CAT! UH-MARIE, DAM-A-SEE!

im really interested to see how they handle this in the american version.

This game made me realize why the kings japanese is all in katakana.

Are you sure he wasn't just voiced by an American? I assumed the opening and ending bits were just voiced by like someone from GAF

Before this game, whenever I read the king's dialogue, I always heard the voice of Kevin Gifford. True story.

Bebpo, he very well may have been, but I'm sure the sound they got was ... intentional.

Has anyone else gotten into collecting the presents and cousins much? I'm finding it to be very rewarding and fun, particularly because of some of the ridiculous cousin designs and the character-specific item changes. Several items, including the guitar, mask, hair, moustache, and glasses have different versions for every single cousin, and they're often really hilarious.

I just unlocked a cousin with a round head and a deep hole in his face, for example. His version of the 'mask' is a huge cork stuffed in his face-hole! It makes finding each cousin that much more fun and exciting, because afterwards you get to run over to the cake and check out all of his or her unique items.

2 cousins and 4 presents left to find! Does anyone have any idea where the present is on the first school level? That one is proving to be especially difficult to find. You'd think it'd be easy to find in such a small space - maybe I'm missing something obvious?

I think it was on top of a tall locker in the corner of a classroom.. No, wait, I think that was the guitar which you obviously already have?

I'm tring to collect the stuff but I really suck at this sort of thing so I'm missing a bunch. Help with the cousins on the baby and old lady levels (and the elephant, where I have found absolutely nothing) would be appreciated! (Edit) Oh, and the racing level too! I found the tall-headed purple dude and the present but can't find any of the others.

I'm having way more fun collecting stuff than I ever did in the first game too. The variation and the alternate level versions are keeping it fresh and fun!

I finished getting all the cousins, though I'm still missing a few presents. I was only really able to do it with the help of my friend, who acts as a cousin spotter as I play the game. Without her help it would've been way, way harder to pull offf. Now to try the dreaded rose gathering... I gave it a quick 20 minute attempt just now, and managed 5000 roses. Only 995,000 left to go! :(

Let me see if I can remember some of the cousins you're looking for -

The first one on the old lady level is in the fenced-off sorta "playground"ish area near the beginning of the level, before you get to the sport court and the swimming pool. So it's before the first size increase. The second one on the old lady level is also before the size increase.. All I remember is that he's somewhere pretty obvious in the first city streets section. The third is past the size increase, close to the end of the beach. She should be pretty easy to see.

The baby level cousin is in the swamp, near the bridge, riding on a fish.

The elephant.. I'm not positive about the order, but pretty sure. The first one is in the opening city area, near the statue of two panda bears in the city center - he's bright orange, so look for that. The second one is on top of a big slanted stack of wrestling/boxing rings. The third one is right next to the Paris/Rome hybrid area, in the water next to the huge waterfall, which I think is supposed to be Niagra Falls. And the fourth is in Egypt (out in the ocean), and is a huge drill-shaped girl drilling in and out of the ground.

As for the race, they're actually all in the middle area, racing around the little mini-track. Each time you retry and find a new cousin, a new one should be in there the next time you play. That goes for all of the levels, actually - you have to catch a cousin and pass the level to make the next one appear. It can become pretty annoying on the 17-minute level!

Good luck, feel free to let me know if you wanna know anything else.

The soundtrack has really grown on me a lot. I love songs like "All Cosmos Salon" for its dramatic, bombastic orchestral arrangement for example. At the same time, I love "Katamari on the Swing" for its over-the-top jazzy groove with the Tom Jones-like singer. Then there's the more laidback, happy songs like "Tsuyogari Damashii" with nice melodies, and of course the wonderful bossa song..."Houston". :) And I dig the catchy j-pop songs like "Baby Universe" and "Everlasting Love", as well as the more wacky stuff like "LOVE & PEACE & KATAMARI DAMACY".

Hehe, I just realized there are a lot of good songs. :D I'd say this soundtrack is just as good as the original. Also, I find the music to be more varied.

WTF, that will take forever!! Or to be more precise, a quick calculation leads me to believe it will take 66 hours and 40 mins with that pace. There must be some kind of trick.

The worst part is that there are only 3 (randomly selected) stages to collect roses on, and all are super-tiny versions of their full counterparts. The ice stage, for example, is just the ring around the snowman. The rest of the level is blocked off, so you have to basically roll around in a circle for as long as you can stomach. The other two aren't much better.

If I do try to go through with this, it's going to have to be in very small burts, spread out over a loooong time. It seems like it'd be more worthwhile, for now, to try to get "shooting stars" (great scores) on the normal stages, in an attempt to unlock some endless modes. Anything's possible, right??

Yeah, isn't that how endless modes were unlocked in the original (getting good scores resulting in shooting stars and sometimes unlocking an endless mode)?
Also, I wonder what the rose collection gives you...it better be something amazing, or people with a lot of time on their hands will be very disappointed if it's as time-consuming as it seems. :P

I got a shooting star on one of the modes last night(whichever one has the 12m limit), and there was a message on screen that seemed to mention the R1 button.

Also, how big do you have to be to light the campfire?

Just big enough to roll up the block of firewood there, I think. Then you get a rating like "small fire" or "medium fire" (which is the biggest I've gotten).

Awesome, thanks a lot. That should help. I'm gonna go try to roll 'em up later. Really want to see this rose-gathering thing.

On the subject of shooting stars, though, is there any way to see if you've gotten one on a level? I know I've gotten a few but it'd be nice to know which ones I still need to get.

I've gone through most of the ones you helped me with now and your descriptions were spot on. Haven't gotten to the elephant ones yet, but I checked which other ones I haven't been able to find yet and all I need now is the farmer one and all but the first one on the old man with a cane (in the "room" with the quit-the-game door) level.

What's with the son, by the way? He just says something and I assume his presence means he'll do something when you do something? Also, did nobody figure out the little roulette in the lower left corner of a beaten stage is about? It looks like it says what it's about right there but I can't read it...

The farmer is the one with untouchable bears and cows on the racetrack level, right?
The cousin on that level is running around the track, and is actually cow-printed so the level ends when you grab him. The present on that level, by the way, is kinda annoying - there's a sort of 'garage' in a little area on the side of the track, and different items keep popping out of it, mostly cars and cows/bears. Every once in a while, though, it spits out a present. You just have to sit next to it and wait for the present to pop out, basically.

As for the old man, I think the cousin you're missing is right in the middle of the level, perched on top of a soda can that's being held in the air by a pencil and some other junk. Once you're big enough you can collapse his little tower from the bottom and pick him up.

Yeah, the son is just telling you to find all of the cousins. You talk to him once you've found them all to trigger the next stage. Also, I read somewhere (gamefaqs maybe? or maybe even in this thread..) that the item in the lower-right is showing you how many of -blank- your Katamari is big. Every time you hit square it shows you a new item and tells you how many it would take to match the size of your Katamari.

As for the old man, I think the cousin you're missing is right in the middle of the level, perched on top of a soda can that's being held in the air by a pencil and some other junk. Once you're big enough you can collapse his little tower from the bottom and pick him up.
No, I think that's the first one on the old man. The little dude with the long face is on a can on top of a pencil in the first room. The second one is the christmas star dude on the tree. After that, I have no idea and I don't understand why I can't get him since I've made a katamari so big I can roll up almost everything in the stage and I still don't get him. :(

Thanks for the heads up on the farmer present, though. I would've never found that.
