Ok, so I just completed the assembly of my new PC and I want to d/l some kewl stuffs:

1-media players: I d/l'ed the free version of quicktime from apples site....I want to get some other good free media players so I can play all the kewl video files of games you see @ GAF from time to time (Windows Media, Divx, etc.)

2-MP3 players: I used to have a free version of winamp to play mp3s on my comp....is this still a good and easy to use choice (I also have itunes already installed on this PC)

3-I used to find all my media downloads at download.com....I liked this place because it was easy to do a search for software apps and they have a decent review/rating system from users....is this still the place to go?

4-Last but not least, we have file sharing.....so I got this here DVD+/- burner installed in my comp, see.....I am wanting to, um....."acuire" some stuff (MGS3 mp3s, Quake 1 and 2 full versions, various gaming and non gaming mp3s)to make backups....I do not want to break any rules so you can pm me on this last subject....

Thanks to all

1. Download the Mega Codec Pack from BetaNews.com
It includes the latest codecs you need, plus Media Player Classic, the BEST video player. Anyone saying different is a liar. It also includes Quicktime and RealPlayer addons so that you can play them ALL in MPC. It's ALL you need.

2. Music, get foobar2000 or MediaMonkey. They both support Winamp2 plugins, but they're great for cataloging music and renaming, etc.

3. I use BetaNews.

4. The one site that everyone mentions is still a good source. I use Azereus for BitTorrent files, Shareaza for generic and WinMX for music.

1: Media Player Classic with QuicktimeAlternative and RealAlternative. Make sure you get FFDShow, that is pretty much a DirectShow filter for Divx and a crapload of other formats, it saves screwing around with the codecs themselves. Voila, you have a media player that plays everything.
2: Foobar. It's really all you need/want.
3: I too, use Betanews.
4: BitTorrent and DC, as stated above.

Edonkey is all you need for filesharing: one big serverless network where uploading is rewarded (no upload = no download): upload with a limit of 20 KB/s and you can download anything with unlimited speed.

Can the Mega Codec Pack also d/l damaged or unfinished media files ala VLC?
Yes, but it's not as clean. It basically pieces all of what it has into a single bar and it's a bit weird if you want to get technical with it.

So I went to direct connect and I find this:

Your share size is to small, the minimum share size is set to: 5 GB

I also got booted out of a hub that had a minimum 1GB limit...

How do I find out what my limit is and how do I change it??

BTW, my ISP is Frontiernet.net

If you can't figure out what that message means you aren't smart enough to use DirectConnect. Just go with Shareaza. It connects to the eDonkey network, along with Gnutella1, Gnutella2 and BitTorrent.

Gee thanks...

So now I am getting this windows "gong" every few secs since I went to direct connect....I have looked all over the desktop and I can't find the source of this.....it definately started after I went to direct connect....have I picked up adware or a worm or something?

How do I check?

Sorry if I am not as knowledgeable as you would like me to be....if this is not the place to get straight answers (it used to feel like home here...no more) then perhaps you could direct me to a place where I can get less condecending answers?

Ignore him Klee, he uses 3's instead of E's thinking it's cool.

Under settings/sharing in Direct Connect it will list what files you are sharing. Add folders to this list to increase your 'limit'.

The 'dong' might be because you have not scrolled to the bottom of the chat window maybe, I know Mirc does this.

Hope it helps.

it means you have to share more than the limit. Other hubs will kick you out if you don't have enough upload slots. As far as the "dong" - just make sure Direct connect is closed - ctrl-alt-delete and make sure it's not in the applications or processes listed. I'm not sure why you'd be getting that though.

The dong happens when you are not scrolled to the bottom of the window and it sounds whenever something else happens at the bottom of the window. If that makes sense.

Gravity is a myth, the Earth SUCKS!
until you have a larger share folder at least it'll be a lot easier to just use bittorrent. An easy one to use is suprnova.org

1. Well, to start off, you should download FFDShow Alpha. It's basically a codec pack that plays XVID, DIVX, etc. For OGM, dl oggds(?) and for MKV, you need Matroska Codec Pack.

But in terms of Media Players, I personally like BSPlayer the best. It's the fastest one IMO and good looking to boot. But what everyone seems to be on these days is Media Player Classic. It's a great media player also and preety much plays everything with the right codecs. Again your choice.

2. Winamp 5 Winamp 5 Winamp 5. But I hear people also using iTunes. It's good also but just not as fast as Winamp IMO.

3. Download.com = Cnet.com. Still the best place to go... hmm. Most software that I use anyways are open source software and hosted at sourceforge.net.

4. Direct Connect is good but I guess the easiest and best way you can go for this is to learn about Bittorrent. I use BitTornado for bittorrent files. After installing, go to suprnova.org and dl to your heart's desire.

Thanks to all...

What about Kazaa Lite K++

any good?

OK so I got bittorrent to work for me :D I found a site which I won't mention here that has about a 20 or so music files (downloading 3 as I type this) so how would I go about finding a sitel with a huge selection of bittorrent music files....I did a search via google for "bittorrent music files" and I came up with the site I am using now....

Ideally, I would like one huge ad/spyware/virus/RIAA-free site where I could type up "MGS3 soundtrack" and find a few versions of that file...would Kazaa Lite K++
fit this discription?
