Idk, I can't fall asleep so I want to know your top 5 albums of all time. Maybe elaborate a bit on the albums.

Here's my list.

5. D'Angelo - Voodoo

vx0vacL.jpg

The best album to come out of the "neo-soul" movement. Questlove's drunken style drumming and Pino Palladino's bass playing make this masterpiece shine. If you like Sly Stone (or more specifically their album "There's a Riot Going On") you should give this a listen.

4. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers

J4geHkm.jpg

My first real introduction to hip-hop and still my favorite hip-hop album. RZA truly gave no fucks when he made the beats for this gem. I mean whose fucking mind would it cross to sample the Wonder Dog Theme to make an aggressive track like "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin' Ta Fuck With" out of it? A lot of people's favorites on this are "C.R.E.A.M." or "Protect Ya Neck" but to me "Tearz" will always be the best cut.

3. The Beatles - Revolver

220px-Revolver.jpg

Even though the Beatles tried to establish themselves as an adult band with Revolver's successor Sgt. Peppers, they already got rid of their boy-band status with this one in my eyes. "Tomorrow Never Knows" will definitely land on my acid trip playlist if I ever plan on having one.

2. Prince - Sign "☮" The Times

mAOdMxh.png

People always talkg about Purple Rain being his best album (nope) even though this is his best.
On the track "Housequake" he emulates James Brown, on the track "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" he emulates Joni Mitchell. Who dares to do that on one album? And he does it effortlessly maintains his own style, not sounding like rip-offs at all. This album shows you Prince's range as a musician and it shows you why Prince was a bad motherfucker in the 80s.

1. Joni Mitchell - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns

OOEHt8j.jpg

It seems that a lot of times when a genius musician hits their commercial peak with an album, their next album is something completely different that either throws people off or increases the artists' popularity. This is probably my favorite follow-up of that kind. The arrangements on this are probably her most ambitious and in terms of songwriting she's at the top of her game. The songs "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow", "Shades of Scarlett Conquering" and "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" are some of the most powerful statements about women in society written by a female songwriter.

No particular order, except Sound of Silver would be first. Of course this list is always changing. I could easily put something like The Beatles Revolver or Abbey Road on here, or throw Bloc Party's first album Silent Alarm in the list. It all depends on my mood and what I've been listening to lately. I could also easily have an album by The National, but I always have trouble picking my favorite. The only constant would always be Sound of Silver. It's my album of the forever and the one I will be telling people about 20 years from now, and they still won't care.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
James Blake - James Blake
Radiohead - OK Computer
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

1. All Hail West Texas - The Mountain Goats
All+Hail+West+Texas.jpg

Every song on this album is here for a reason and trying to connect the dots is something that has entertained my brains for years.

2. The Moon and Antarctica - Modest Mouse
The+Moon+and+Antarctica+cover.jpg

This album ended up being oddly metaphysical for me. Some varied songs in there such as Tiny Cities Made of Ashes and The Stars are Projectors that some people may not like, but for me they have the same kind of hook that Cowbay Dan does.

3. Who Will Cut Our Hair When We Are Gone? - The Unicorns
Who+Will+Cut+Our+Hair+When+Were+Gone.jpg

Every single album these guys put out (2 released) were perfect. Their unreleased All Makes Parts and Collisions was amazing too. It included Ebb Tide Azure Sky, which is my favorite track from them. Islands' Swans is a love letter and Swansong for The Unicorns and references Peach Moon, Ebb Tide, as well as numerous other songs. This particular album borders between experimental and electropop.

4. Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Siamese+Dream+Siamese.png

The second album from SP was fucking phenomenal. Not a single track feels like filler. Melancholy may get a lot of cred, but it was a lot of quantity over quality - not to say it's a bad album because it is fantastic, but Siamese Dream just hit this constant chord that evokes a romantic longing.

5. If You're Feeling Sinister - Belle & Sebastian
If+Youre+Feeling+Sinister++png.png

Belle & Sebastian was almost impossible to find a single album to encompass everything I love about them, but this particular album touches on some of their running themes, such as pensiveness, relationships, writing, and ever un-attainable dreams we all chase. Storytelling, The Life Pursuit, Dear Catastrophe Waitress, and Tigermilk are all equally beautiful albums as well.

This is hard to narrow it down, but I tried to include the best all around albums, although there are albums that had a single song that really set it apart.

Honorable Mentions:
Is This It - The Strokes
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out - Yo La Tengo
Strawberry Jam / Centipede Hz - Animal Collective
Before the Dawn Heals Us - M83
13 & God - 13 & God
A Memory Stream - The American Dollar

1. Tool - Lateralus
2. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome -
3. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
4. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
5. Ayreon - The Human Equation

I am a bit of a nerd. Love prog metal/rock and concept albums.

Not posting pictures because this thread is already going to murder to load on my gimped connection:

1. Brand New - Deja Entendu
2. Counting Crows - August and Everything After
3. Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth III
4. Songs in the Key of X: The X-Files Soundtrack
5. The Crow OST

Yeah, I included two soundtracks, simply because usually I don't like albums, I like SONGS. There are always songs that I dislike on albums, so I don't list them as favorites. The top three, however, I generally can't find anything I dislike about them.

1. Funeral for a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
2. Alexisonfire - Watch Out!
3. Brand New - The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me
4. Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism

It changes fairly often, but here are 5 that I really like a lot and are always staples in my collection:

wU8WRIL.jpg
DbOkJRX.jpg
hwP8Y9N.jpg

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Dark, powerful experimental rock album the likes of which I haven't heard anywhere else. Some incredible vocals by Mark Hollis and very unique instrumentation. This sort of album is the kind of thing I feel Radiohead has been heading towards for a while now with records like Kid A and TKoL; I would be shocked if they weren't fans of this record. Their second last album, Spirit of Eden, is almost equally as great.
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
My favorite record of theirs by a landslide. This album ranges from lighthearted and fun, to heartfelt and emotional. It has some amazing and varied instrumentation, and Coyne is probably at his best vocal-wise. Great songwriting start to finish.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
I like a fair amount of Animal Collective's output, but I consider this to be their all time best. The songs are all fantastic, and the vocal harmonies between Avey Tare and Panda Bear are perfect. They dropped a lot of the conventional guitar driven stuff that was found in albums like Strawberry Jam, and went for more abstract and interesting synth sounds and samples, and in my opinion nailed it.
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Easily my favorite Arcade Fire album, very emotional indie rock with some very memorable tunes.
The Unicorns - Who will cut our hair when we're gone?
Not really sure how to describe this one. You should just listen to it because it's awesome and has some incredible variety between its songs.
