GAF: Help with AMD

The short, short version:
I moved from New York to San Francisco. I made it in one piece, my computer wasn't so lucky. So rather than playing Russian Roulette to see exactly which component this itty-bitty heat sink came from (it's currently in my pocket), I'll swallow the cost and fight tooth and nail to get the shitheads at UPS to reimburse me. That is what the package insurance is for, right?

Anyway, I think now's as good a time as any to jump onto the AMD bandwagon. I'd like to go with Socket 939, but I don't need a top-of-the-line CPU as the most advanced, new game I plan on playing is Psychonauts. But I just want to know anything you guys - collectively - know about AMD's processors. How the model numbers relate to speed (if at all), what to look out for, and the different classes of processors (if any.) I don't know an Opteron from an Athlon XP.

Thanks.

Opertons aren't really for consumers.

Athlon XPs are old. You'd be better off with Intel P4 Cs than that.

Get something between a 3000+ and 3500+. Whatever is more bang/buck.

I think that the winchester is their most current chip revision basically they just went to the 90nm manufacturing process, what this means for you is that you get the same or better performance with less heat. Look for a AMD 64 3200+ or 3500+ winchester not newcastle.

I haven't really been following CPU's for the last month or so, so I might be wrong and would really appreciate it if some one corrects me.

I think the Venice stepping of the A64 just came out, no? I think it runs cooler and I know it sports an improved memory manager.

If going AMD64 then the Venice Cores are what you get. No debating, get the Venice Cores. If you wait till June/July you can jump on the AMD64 X2 bandwagon.

Yes. They are the fastest, but also the most insanely overpriced.

And they aren't that much faster than say a 3500+.
