"Too Old To Die Young: Russell Simmons"

Too Old To Die Young is a short documentary series showcasing the lives of urban culture's most legendary characters. This episode focuses on the world of Russell Simmons, one of music's most successful moguls and a pioneer in bringing hip hop to a broader audience. Mass Appeal, alongside legendary publicist Bill Adler, spent the day following Russell, getting a better sense of his unique understanding and perspective on the world around him.

Lol this is embarrassing. He is still better than 99% of your faves. Sure he should probably stop talking about ass raping and talk about him being older, his daughter being grown up and other shit, but still way better than most rappers now-a-days.

has never been better than most rappers, back then and now

Nobody will probably care about this in this topic but Murs next album that will drop on 10 March will be a stories telling album.

I might listen, though I think I only ever liked Murs because of the 9th Wonder production. Loved Murs & 9th Wonder - 3:16 The 9th Edition.

Junior so this is probably a real post

Disgusting

He could if he tried.
But that's the point, he doesn't.

The man has the Alchemist as his tour DJ and has only once spit over an Alchemist beat, and his flow on that isn't anything crazy. The man's the most famous protege of Dr. Dre but hasn't used a Dre beat on his own album in a long time. Fuck, even on Sean's album, his bars basically ruined what was a fucking great flow. Atlanta rappers may say absolutely nothing with their lyrics, but I'd take that over a 50 year old man talking about ass rape, battering Jamie Lee Curtis to death, sticking posters up Ann Coulter, etc. It's like the Genius annotation says:
Making all these references to domestic abuse is Em's way of letting us know that, for better or worse, he is not going to stop writing violent lyrics about women, so urging him to cease the practice is a lost cause.
Great, but in 2017, it feels tone-deaf.

I still maintain if Eminem really started to give a shit and wanted to make an album that was his grand sendoff, it would be one of the best albums of all time. His flow is immaculate, but his lyrics are just trash-tier edgelord fuel for angsty kids who've progressed past Linkin Park & Korn and want to prove they're hip by listening to rap.

Eminem doesn't have a single album that can be favorably compared to Jay or Nas' classic albums. His stuff has aged poorly and is incredibly crass and frivolous lyrically in many ways. Can't really trace much impact on rap either.

How is his flow immaculate?? He's screaming and rapid-firing on every type of beat regardless of mood and concept of song. It's so exhausting and grating to listen to. His "starting low and gradually getting louder and more aggressive" thing is so damn tired and annoying.

It's not about effort, he doesn't have anything relevant to say nor is he capable of putting together any sort of high concept artistic statement. He said all he had to say decades ago.

Aren't you a Denzel Curry fan? I have to admit that I was legit surprised by your reaction to that Kaan tracks on another note. Dude had the energy of Imperial.

He can flow well, his delivery and his lyrics are crap. In my head, I see "flow" as the rhythm his lyrics are spoken at, and "delivery" as how he says his bars. In that way, his flow is pretty good. Even on this Sean song, he varies his flow quite well, though I get what you're talking about with that escalating intensity.

See, that was my other thought when it came to Em; his whole image was predicated on him doing this horrorcore shit and he somehow managed to transition into pop stardom with that. He really doesn't have anything much to say other than "Let me say graphic shit about women", "I used to do drugs and it fucked me up, but I recovered", and "I was white trash but I made it."

Maybe he could surprise me one day, but unless he really finds something he wants to talk about, I don't think that day will ever come.

The tracks luv scars and xo tour life from uzi's latest ep have really grown on me, getting constant play. I think they're some of his strongest tracks.

I admit I stopped after a minute or two and skipped through the rest, but the Kaan song sounded like typical lyrical-miracle-spritual-individual Rap that gets shared on Real Rap™ Facebook groups. I might be completely off-base, though, and maybe there's more to him than my first impression.

And yeah, Imperial was in my Top 3 AOTY. Denzel's fast rapping doesn't feel like it's just for the sake of being technical (lyrics are pretty simple and, tbh, corny at times) and for me the energy comes from the synergy of the beats and the flow. Maybe we have different definitions of energy, though!

Having said this, I have to be honest, I'm sometimes surprised myself that I liked the Denzel album as much, since I don't like fast, screamy rapping anymore. But the flows are still varied enough and the dope production and infectious hooks surely helped.

I think I've been playing the EP a few times a day since you posted it, too. Dude has improved a lot from what I remember from the first tape I listened to a year ago or so.

EDIT: Okay, maybe I was misremembering. Checking out his older tapes out right now and he wasn't as bad as I thought. Maybe I confused him with another "Lil something", lol.

If I had to do a quick ranking of the things I've heard from him, it'd probably be something like Uzi vs the world > Luv is rage > Luv is rage 1.5 > perfect luv > 1017 vs the world
Tbh they're all worth checking out though. I still think Baby are you home has a monster beat but I never see anyone share that opinion.

Yeah I find that they all have at least 2 or 3 tracks that I like. Vs. the world is probably the best top to bottom though. Baby are you home has such a crazy production, a lot of layers going on and it sounds so menacing.
I think it's a little unfortunate that his most popular thing is his feature on bad and boujee because it's not a great representation of what he's capable of putting out.

Can we talk about how good Mannie Fresh really is?

I've never been much of a Cash Money Record fan (though I admittedly avoided their music for the longest time due to their reputation), but after listening to these old Cash Money albums, Mannie Fresh's production is insanely good on these albums.

Dude was Cash Money.

It's crazy that he produced all of this shit basically by himself....from the recent 'hip hop beats' thread:

Big Tymers feat.B.G.-Stuntastic

Turk featuring Mickey and Christina-Growing Up

Juvenile - They Lied

My Life- Juvenile ft. TQ maybe my favorite CM song
