Hot takes:
4:44 is okay. The concept of Jay dissing Ye over an album entirely produced by No I.D. sounds dope as hell, until I listened to it and found the
abysmal delivery on all these Jay quotes I see everywhere on social media. Seriously, what are people fawning over exactly when Jay's breaking his flow to awkwardly drop these lines in a rush (e.g. game for $9.99 bar?)? I was excited for No I.D. alone, but even reading about how No I.D. didn't want to do it until basically Jay pressured him to do it kind of shows in the production, which is uneven and pretty far from No I.D.'s best. I feel I owe Jay a few more listens though, but so far (going off of memory here) I only really like Smile and Family Feud. It's not all bad, I think it's decently cohesive and at times it feels like Jay is back in his bag but overall kind of falls flat. Hopefully this changes with additional listens.
Funky Wav Bounces Vol.1 is kind of like a bad Khaled album TBH. Slide is outstanding, but it's kind of obnoxiously poppy otherwise, and I don't think the artists come with it most of the time and feels like missed opportunities (how is a Travi$ Scott x A-Trak song wack?!). Rollin and Cash Out are okay, and Faking It is good, but yeah, the rest is not for me, but I can see this resonating with the BBQ Jam crowd.
Instrumental Tapes 4 is great, as per usual, but I thought 3 was a bit weaker of a collection so to get stuff like Norf Norf on 4 (which I didn't even know he produced, but it makes sense in retrospect) is great.
Issa Album isn't what I expected, and he could definitely cut down on the autotune, but it feels like a nice switch and avoidance of stagnation from his previous project. Still feels like 21 with some insidious sounding beats with those demonic strings and all. Production on point throughout, and the similarity is to be expected because Metro produced nearly the entirety of it, but yeah some of the more lovey dovey songs (Baby Girl/Special especially) are ehhh. Overall, there's about 50% ehhh-to-bad songs, but the other half still bangs and reminds me a lot of Savage Mode than I expected when reading the reactions here. Sucks that All The Smoke didn't make the album, but Close My Eyes, Numb, Dead People, 7 Min Freestyle are prime murder music, and I like Famous and Nothing New too.
