GAF hype let me down Vol. 1: Psi Ops

GDJustin

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
So I had a $15 gift card to Best Buy and bought Psi Ops solely because of the GAF hype around the game. Granted I'm not particularly far in it, but I'm not sure I'm going to be giving it anymore chances to see if it picks up.

Yes, the Psi powers are cool and its EXTREMELY satisfying to launch someone at a wall or explosive device over and over (and over...) but that doesn't (in my opinion) justify the rest of the package, which is generic at best, and very poor at worst. Imagine the game without the Psi powers... it'd be shit. Granted that's like saying imagine mario without the jumping or something... but the point is still valid enough. The point is one aspect of a game executed very well does not make up for all the other aspects that were executed poorly.

Rememember at the very very start of the game when your psi powers hadn't been "reawakened" yet and all you had was your gun? If you do, you'll remember how it was complete shit. Generic protagonist, generic badguys, generic locale. The controls were very difficult to wrestle with, and if you're like me you most likely lost about half your life just making your way past that first hallway. What the psi powers do is distract you from those shit findamentals you experienced in the first few minutes of play. It doesn't elminate them.

There's also the shitty inventory management, map system, etc.

The game isn't BAD per se. I just don't think its anywhere near as good as GAF at large made it out to be. What the game really needs is a sequel that essentially takes those psi ideas and tosses everything else.

It wasn't really GAF as much as it was Matlock just having no taste in videogames.

*cue Matlock with obvious comeback...*

That's about how I felt after playing the OXM and E3 demos. I think my OXM subscription has paid for itself in saving me money on games I would have bought, but then thought twice about after trying them out. :)

Well I wasn't paying attention to what specific posters said what, but the game came up on multiple people's lists for "sleeper" and was otherwise being pointed out as an "overlooked" game of 2004...

I came in here to point out the distinction between GAF hype and Matlock hype, but it seems I've been beaten to the punch. Twice.

Well, at least now I know, eh?

See also, the Midway Hype Train. All I ever saw out of the last batch of Midway games, Psi-Ops and The Suffering in particular, were high production values, improved quality, and the gamble on new IPs; qualities I may anticipate from developers but not games I particularly enjoyed in the least.

This is Vol. 2 by default. Vol. 1 is entirely the realm of:

Ugh, CoN was such a disappointment.

And don't you mean you were let down by the Matlock hy... oh.

Soon you'll learn not to trust his opinion. Don't ever let him recommend Dark Knight Strikes Again to you.

I personally didn't like Metal Arms. I traded that in towards an Xbox in the end.

I even bought Gotcha Force off of recommendations I must have imagined! I was let down by my brain and not GAF or anyone else that time though.

For me it would be Time Splitters 2,yuck...what a horrible single player game.

And about that first stage, man that was the biggest Golden Eye tease of all time. Because as good as that stage was-the rest of the stages were pretty average and the shooting action was generic in my opinion.

The multi player was fun but in no way would I consider this game a purchase, nor would I ever have gone out of my way to reccomend the game to anyone. I have to much respect for peoples money.

Others enjoyed it so good for them I guess. But this game was really hyped on Gaming Age a few years back, damn was it ever hyped.

Matlock is cowering in a corner with a bottle of Jack, yammering incoherently...

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! WHY CAN'T EVERYONE LIKE PSI-OPS???"

I was almost sold on Psi-Ops, too. Thanks for the stern warnings, guys! I'll probably still pick it up for $5-10 someday, but my interest in picking it up at $20 has vanished.

If you don't like Otogi 1 or 2, you need to work on some fucking taste.

i thought otogi was decent

seemed a bit to "artsy/abstract" for me (yes I suck I know)

plus I hated the health depletion meter

Psi Ops haters can kiss my ass. The game does have problems... but that doesn't take away that it is pretty damn fun. I'm curious... what was so difficult about the fps style control system?

You hit the nail on the head here. The game is relatively decent, but the tech-demoiness of it makes it really fun to fuck shit up. YMMV by any hype, but eh.

The Bouncer, now shut it.

:lol So soon we forget the other good recommendations, and the fact that Sera backed me on the DKSA recommendation. Ah well, it wasn't for everyone.

haha, matlock's opinion.

green > pinkerton :lol :lol :lol :lol

I sometimes think Pink is better than Green, but it's a constant that the two albums are far above Blue.

Green is better than Pinkerton, but Psi Ops still is mediocre. :D

I preferred Second Sight.

It's cool, and has a great story...but Psi-Ops felt a little more "open."

As for the rest of you, go piss up a rope! Except you, Buddy, you need to come into my office.

And, of course, this can't be any more disappointing than Ico, Wind Waker, Mark of Kri, Champions of Norrath, Beyond Good and Evil, et al were to me. :P

Ico is good, but so GAFoverrated. Same with BGE.
But Green Album?
GREEN ALBUM??

I was just about to pick up Psi-Ops for $10 in the GameFly sale. Now I'm probably not. Is this game worth it or not?

I respect your right to an opinion, matlock..and I have a copy of Psi Ops sitting here on the backlog...but..but....Mark of Kri? Blasphemer!
