So I had a $15 gift card to Best Buy and bought Psi Ops solely because of the GAF hype around the game. Granted I'm not particularly far in it, but I'm not sure I'm going to be giving it anymore chances to see if it picks up.
Yes, the Psi powers are cool and its EXTREMELY satisfying to launch someone at a wall or explosive device over and over (and over...) but that doesn't (in my opinion) justify the rest of the package, which is generic at best, and very poor at worst. Imagine the game without the Psi powers... it'd be shit. Granted that's like saying imagine mario without the jumping or something... but the point is still valid enough. The point is one aspect of a game executed very well does not make up for all the other aspects that were executed poorly.
Rememember at the very very start of the game when your psi powers hadn't been "reawakened" yet and all you had was your gun? If you do, you'll remember how it was complete shit. Generic protagonist, generic badguys, generic locale. The controls were very difficult to wrestle with, and if you're like me you most likely lost about half your life just making your way past that first hallway. What the psi powers do is distract you from those shit findamentals you experienced in the first few minutes of play. It doesn't elminate them.
There's also the shitty inventory management, map system, etc.
The game isn't BAD per se. I just don't think its anywhere near as good as GAF at large made it out to be. What the game really needs is a sequel that essentially takes those psi ideas and tosses everything else.
