GAF hype rebounds: Technic Beat

At first sight, it's a budget title with cutesy characters on the box.

Then you start it up, looks like a cheap game from the get go.

Then you start, playing as one of a handful of goofy characters...running about on the top of a glass platform that ripples shine out of...

...no reason why, but when you get into the game, it doesn't really matter. It's that good.

PLUS. PLUS. It has Splatterhouse tunes (which are fucking hard).

Got $20? Get Technic Beat. That simple.

I would absolutely love to do a Technic Beat rip, and have wanted to do one for years, but I don't really see any way that it'd be possible considering the nature of the songs. Basically someone would have to perform the track perfectly, in-game, as it's being recorded. I've looked at other options like direct extraction from the disc, and have even resorted to asking Shinji Hosoe himself if he could help out with a soundtrack, but my efforts have been fruitless so far. I haven't played the US version much, but I don't suppose there's any chance that it has an unlockable sound test?? I'd say the chances are pretty slim.

A soundtrack is available for Technictix, though. It's the PS2 prequel to Technic Beat and is the source of almost all of the non-Namco tunes in the game. You still won't get your Splatterhouse (and I won't get my Pac-Mania and Libble Rabble), but if you're fond of tracks like PHONE DEAD ROO you might want to consider picking it up here:

I just started playing it again over the past couple of days and can personally attest to just how freaking difficult that the Splatterhouse arrangement is. It's awesome that it's in there, and it sounds great, but I can't get through even 30% of the song before I get my ass summarily handed to me.

The Ridge Racer arrangement is sweet, too.

It's too bad that there isn't a sound test...

Are there GameShark/Action Replay codes? If someone could get a code for all perfects, I think you'd be set.

True, but even then they'd be imperfect because of the congratulatory voice clips that play over the music when you're kicking ass.

Better than nothing, though. Maybe.

I picked this up today, and fooled around with it for a few minutes.

I totally sucked at it. I need to read the instructions now.
