To start off, I'm mega hyped for The Phantom Pain. I bought the legacy collection a while ago and I thought I'd play MGS4 (for some reason) and Peace Walker which I've never played.
After the install process I make it all the way to meeting Rat Patrol 01 and during a codec conversation the game freezes. Nothing responds so I turn off the PS3.
When I come back, it won't read discs anymore. DVDs nor Blu-Ray. It'll spin sometimes, but after a while it just makes the eject noise and stops (doesn't actually eject).
So of course I go online and see what my problem could be. First I try rebuilding the database, then reformatting, all of it.
Nothing works.
Next I take it apart and clean the lens (another suggestion from online).
Doesn't work.
The next bit of info I find, leads me to believe the blu-ray laser has finally burnt out. I've had the system since 2010 so it made sense to me.
I order a new laser and track from ebay and wait patiently. When it arrives I promptly put it all together (yes correctly. I watched all the videos I needed to online while I was waiting for it to come in the mail. and yes I'm still using the original PCB). Plug it in, expecting it to work aaaaaaand nothing. Same issue. Eject noise.
So I think, "great. the guy sold me a defective laser." It's been known to happen and some of his feedback said just that. So I order another one (this time Amazon) and it comes today. Go through the same process and again NOTHING.
At this point I'm thinking its unlikely I've gotten two defective lasers, so it's gotta be something else.
Then I vaguely remember there being a slight power surge when I was playing a little before it broke. Lights flickered, AC cut in and out. So I'm thinking the problem is a short or something in my power supply.
Now here is the weird part. I can get it to read DVDs sometimes. NEVER blu-ray.
To get it to read DVDs, I usually have to insert the disc as its booting up. It'll read and it'll play fine until I stop it. The strange thing is, if I take that disc out and put it right back in. It WON'T play.
A friend of mine mentioned that DVDs use less power to read than a Blu-Ray might, is this true? If it is, it seems more likely that its my power supply cause I honestly can't think of anything else.
Has anyone had to deal with this problem before and have they solved it?
I have a PS3 Slim (CECH-2001A)
Lens is KES-450A
Track is KEM-450A
Sorry for the lengthy post. Thanks, guys.
tldr;
PS3 Slim will sometimes read DVDS, not blu-rays or games
Replaced two different lasers and hasn't fixed problem
Rebuilt database didn't work (Safe Mode)
Restored File System didn't work (Safe Mode)
Reformatted everything didn't work
George is getting upset!
