So it's EXTREMELY rare my internet is out. I suspect it won't be long. Never is.

Storms are passing by

But my steam deck won't boot. Stuck on "logging in"

So I'm guessing it REQUIRES an internet connection?

Steam can struggle w/ not being online if you haven't explicitly put yourself in "offline mode."

I believe if you reboot it it can go into offline mode though? Was it on sleep or allready on?

Modern gaming! The sad future barreling forth. Hope you get it working.

Why not hotspot with the phone or device you're making this post with? Then you might be able to toggle offline mode? Though it's a bit ridiculous, you kind of need to be online to go offline.

Just never heard of that. It's a handheld with downloaded games. Why can't I play them?

Again I'm really not upset or anything. It's a rarity and I'm just wondering lol

But would be kinda cool to play some games

It's DRM, it's a bit of a catch 22 but you have to go offline mode purposefully first while still online, because that basically does something to tell Steam you have 14 days or something to launch games offline, assuming the games have DRM.

DRM-less games can launch w/o Steam whatsoever.

Honestly not entirely sure how the Deck works, but IIRC you could re-boot into offline mode.., although my Deck is a pre-release employee test one.

No hotspot. Cost extra. Lol 😂 never really needed it. Figured save the $10

Hmmm. So since I've never done that. Am I boned?

Rebooted it. And now it's "checking for updates" which It obviously will never find lol 😂

Doesn't the phone simply control that? I just turn on the phone's settings; kinda weird you need to pay your carrier extra.

Yep. It's carrier related. Also lets even pretend I had one

Can't get the Deck booted, so frankly it's useless regardless bc I cant Pick a network and put in a password.

To prevent a bad actor from just taking any game files and side loading them onto hardware and playing, steam tracks your purchases/ library.
Periodically, it requires that before executing a game file, it checks with its systems to verify that you actually own it.
Those tokens are good for only a certain amount of time before they expire and it requires the recertification.
Going into offline mode does a check on everything in your library at once so everything is playable for the period of time you will be offline.
It's why you may have trouble if you don't specifically put it in offline mode before losing internet.
If you can get it past the point of being able to access your library, you may also find that you only have access to some of your library that still has valid tokens.

Unfortunately internet outage is much more common in my area, this is why I highly value systems and games that I can completely play offline.

This is why I have zero desire to get systems like Steam Deck or Playstation Portal, they are just useless to me.

Can't you use your phone as a personal hotspot for internet access?

Oh…nevermind

Welp. I'll tell ya my Steam Deck is a brick sadly

Now if it booted. I wish It would. I could Toggle offline mode or something I guess But it refuses to boot bc it wants an internet connection

Already been addressed

And again, let's say I've got 1000 hotspots. I cant goto settings and pick and network for it to actually USE.

It refuses to boot up and stays "checking for available updates"

Gotcha. Storming bad here as well. You in Alabama or Georgia?

Back when the Witcher 2 came out my computer had an error (cyclic redundancy error) and it's the physical disc. I ended up buying digitally and download it from my sister's place. Put it in Offline Mode and played it back at my place. This was when DSL wasn't where I was. Offline Mode worked like a charm. Desktop Mode will launch Desktop Steam. Maybe it'll work from there?

The thing I like about Switch is even if my entire house's power goes out I can play games on my switch with ZERO issues.

I dont need systems or games that can only function online.

Can't argue with that. Just kinda felt this machine could play my downloaded games. I've now been proven wrong lol 😂

Also update

I've docked it. It's just now a bigger screen that won't boot up.

Just park as close as possible to the front door of your local Walmart. Their wifi is unsecured and free.

Again. WiFi and hotspots aren't an issue. Because I'm unable to tell my Deck what connection to use and it will just want to default to my own connection at this point. lol

No settings here to toggle

Use this as quality time, to really ask your wife how she feels, really listen, maybe plan the next trip so she has something to look forward to

Shutdown entirely. How can I get offline mode? I've sent a photo on what I see on my end

This proves the ROG is the superior handheld. If I can't can't access Steam can always access Gamepass, GOG, Epic, etc.

Don't you have like a gazillion Crimson Tide games from the past 20 years to keep you company?

Oh yeah? So where is "way down there" where you are?
Man I've seen us win so much I get tired of winning lol 😂

Honestly, it's exhausting, all this winning. People come up to me, they say, "Sir, how do you keep winning like this?" I tell 'em, it's simple—we're the best, we've always been the best. Other teams? Sad! They're losin', cryin' about it, can't keep up with our Tide. We're like a freight train of victory—unstoppable, fantastic. Roll Tide, folks, greatest fans in the history of college football, believe me!
