GAF Photography Thread of 2017

I'd rather ask in here then the camera equipment thread since it seems to pertain more to post processing but are the monitor calibration tools such as colormunki or spyder worth it? Are there any drawbacks?

Need quick advice.

I'm taking fireworks photos later for Canada Day and deciding what lens/camera to use. Either I'm using the A6000 with the 16mm-50mm f3.5-f6.5 kit lens (or something like that) or the RX100 that has a f1.8 lens.

Which do you think would be better? I'm worried about the a6000 kit lens being aboslute garbage especially in terms of taking photos in the dark but the wider frame is making me lean towards it. The RX100 has the better lens but the smaller sensor means I'd have lower image quality overall.
If you're shooting fireworks, you should be at f-8 or f-11 ish, and at those apertures, even kit lenses perform well enough.

The thing with fireworks, is that you're not shooting in the dark, your subject is really bright. Shooting fireworks is not really an exercise in low light photography, strictly speaking.

Set your tripod, set your camera, get your framing, ISO 100 (or whatever base is), f8-ish, and a shutter speed of around 5 to 10 seconds, depending on how long you want your trails to be. Or get a remote shutter release and time it yourself manually. Or just set your intervalometer (if your camera has one) to keep shooting automatically.

Yes
(but as long as your monitor is not hugely out of whack, there are probably better things to spend your money on)
Are there any drawbacks?

I was in Roanoke, VA this weekend with a friend, and took a short jaunt out of town into the mountains on Thursday night. I'm really happy with how this turned out. I have a bunch of other photos from this trip up the mountain too, but this one was a whole lot of work to get together, so they will have to wait.

12 photos composed to get this view. Stars and foreground edited separately, perfect weather and conditions. Fire watch tower perfectly painted by a crescent moon... it was a good night.

The girlfriend and I did our first wedding and holy shit was it a lot of work and stress. It was for her aunt's wedding and it didn't have a long fancy reception, so I can't imagine being there for another 5+ hours. My girlfriend being anxious, and not wanting to "insult" her aunt only charged her $200. But this experience has opened her eyes, and mine too that we should be charging normal rates from now on.

There were a lot of good lessons about having extra memory cards on hand, and we will definitely need a 70-200 lens. We got away with it this time because of the nature of the reception and it was all in daylight. Next time we will have to communicate a lot better with the customer, and be involved in picking areas to photograph.

You either get 2.8 zooms or use a lot of primes on like 3 bodies, most likely a 35, 85 and 135 I would assume, but yeah nobody really does weddings for money with half ass glass.

Nobody serious does. However, I see a lot of unserious folks try their hand at it nowadays. On the one hand, I can't blame them for trying to carve out a piece of the pie for themselves, but on the other hand, I feel bad for the couple who are going to get less than great pics.

Tell me about it. I wouldn't even photograph a volunteer event with bad glass, but at the same time I've seen other people do it. On top of this I've seen my pics used over theirs so in a way they just wasted their own time.

Shot about 4 weddings only with 35 prime lens (manual). It's possible.

And yes, you should definitely check out the location ahead a couple of days. Same goes for the couple (timetable etc.)

I know jack about photography for starters. Snapped this one with my phone while cracking a cold one and grilling with the boys after hiding from a storm.

Clouds, sunset, BBQ smoke =

It was magical IRL.

love the last two, and the second one is very interesting. Great light.

Thanks!

Those are great, is there a camping area near the cabin or is it open?

Thanks. This is actually a fire lookout tower that has been converted into a public bird watching observation tower.

It's in the Jefferson National Forest, so I just threw down a tent nearby and camped there. I hiked up the mountain at like 10PM with just a headlamp which was an interesting experience to say the least.

I originally planned on hiking up the next night, but the forecast was only going to be clear that night so I ran over there as quickly as I could and had to hike up in the dark.

Some more from last weekend.

Incredible place and you captured it so well. These kinds of places are why I miss the USA sometimes...

I'm not too big on the whole travel thing but every once in a while....

First shot looks fun! Why are you not big on travel? So many great things to see and capture with your camera.

A lot of good stuff on this page from everyone! Was in Beijing last weekend again with my girl, went to an exhibition and took some photos of her there. It was damn near impossible to get pics of her without a billion people everywhere in the way, the exhibition is the hottest ticket in town apparently. Managed to get a few of just her.

Wouldn't date her if she wasn't pretty :p And thanks dude!

I somehow forgot to upload to flickr and share one other one that I like quite a bit. So add it here now:

Nice silhouette. Tell her to watch Jojo's Bizarre Adventure so she can up her pose game. I haven't photographed a woman I actually liked in over a year.

lol no thanks I definitely won't tell her anything of the sort. If you are telling girls about animes that's probably a good indicator as to why you haven't photographed a girl you like in so long. Head back to the dating age thread my man!

I haven't, but this implies that I have any significant updates to add to that thread which I don't.

Lol alright. So is Jojo any good? I feel like there was a Dreamcast version of it, like a fighting game... been so long now. That's the only reason I know what you are talking about.

It's a pretty fun and bizarre anime/manga. I think me and Astral/H3X are the only fans of it here.

How long is the hike?

How long is the hike?

Not very long at all, a little under a mile. There is a trail head pretty close to the actual tower if you want to just do that. It branches off of the Allegheny Trail which is obviously a much longer trail.

It's the only reason I felt comfortable doing it at night on short notice.

Cool, I'll have to add it to my list of places to see and drive out to

Pretty good set
Thank you. I'm just happy I finally have a good image of a Shiba Inu, it's my favorite dog. Just need a really good Husky picture now. Thankfully I'm now starting to look at other places to shoot if I have time. The same place gets so fucking boring.

A few shots from last weekend's trip, I have a huge buffer of things I've shot and edited but haven't shared anywhere. Here I tried and dabbled with landscapes.

Just some test shots in Shibuya with the Fujifilm X-T2 I'm testing out. Love the colors this thing can produce with the different film simulations. JPEGs out of the camera look amazing, which is quite a difference coming from my Sony.

Damn you guys are posting some good shit.

I've been cooped up in a cubicle since Memorial Day and I haven't shot in weeks. :(

Gonna try to change that this weekend...hopefully lol.

JadedWriter, how do you process your X-T2 files? Do you edit the RAWs in Lightroom or some other software or are those SOOC JPEGs?

I edit the RAWs in LR and then just apply the film simulations in LR or just leave them as is, depends on my mood. I think my first two XT2 posts when I got it were SOOC Jpegs, but after that I just dealt with the RAW's myself. I will admit to finally getting used to them. I think the noise isn't as clean as my D810, but that's the nature of the sensor size I think.
