GAF ready for the HD era??

So, whos gearing up for the HD era in november? After 6 months of researching me and my Dad went out last night and bought a 50 inch rear projection HD TV (and a new Dell PC). With Sony and MS pushing HD so hard, i thought it was the right time to invest. I was so close to buying a plasma back in January, glad i held off.

How many other GAFFERs preparing for the HD era?
 
no, I will stick to my crappy 1998 toshiba till it breaks down. Even after it breaks down I won't spend 2000 clams on a fucking tv set, I will probably buy a cheap one again.
 
I'd like to be. I've been waiting for some cheaper sets and technical issues to be resolved. I'll most likely pick up one of the Samsung 46" DLPs. I'm not going to stress out about it though, nor will I swallow the company line surrounding the HD Era.

Since I might not even pick up an Xbox 360 at/near launch, my time frame is flexible.
 
I have the hardware I need, but when 360 is released, I will be in Japan without it. So, I guess I'll have to wait a while before enjoying the "HD era". Ah well, it will make the replaying of some games more enjoyable...

HDTV is still too damn expensive. I will buy one when they are around what I paid for my 36" Wega XBR.

Hopefully this new OLED technology will really take off. It sure looks promising.
 
I have a 56" rear projection that supports 720p natively, but I'm getting a 1080p front projector next year. :D
 
i'm ready, but i won't be buying one 'til around the time PS3 comes out.

here are the requirements of my future TV:

- 1080p
- HDMI input
- no bigger than 30 inches

next-gen gaming is gonna be awesome!

Still don't feel a real need for it and i also don't have the money for it anyway. Call me back when those TV will have a decent reasonnable price (read "under 1000" AT THE VERY LEAST)
 
i have a sony 61" rear projection, it's great for size but man the newer HD stuff makes me wanna trade in even if it ends up being a tad smaller.

Yep. Talked my wife into a 32" Toshiba FST back in 2002 for ~$800 and all it is a flat screen TV, not HDTV at all :(

Going to have to wait a bit to get an affordable HDTV that will do either 720p/1080i or maybe hold out for a true 1080p set. In either case, it ain't happening in 2005.
 
I'm buying either a 61" JVC D-ILA or a 60-70" Sony LCD this fall after I partially finish my basement. I haven't decided which one, but I've been looking forward to the purchase for about a year now.
 
I've been ready... got my 65" HDTV with component inputs and 1080i output. Got my wireless network and a spare "G" usb wireless adapter sitting in the closet. All I need now is the 360.
 
Since I live in Europe, I'll probably be able to get myself a nice HDTV in 2007. Which is ok since I'm not in any kind of rush.
 
not ready yet... I am leaning twards a Sony CRT widescreen HDTV, but I am kinda hesitant about it - it converts all incoming signals into 1080i. Logic tells me that p.scan would be better for videogames... but LCDs and DLP sets have left me unimpressed as far as IQ goes.

Am I just being paraniod? if the primary use for my next set is going to be next-gen gaming - what is the best TV out there? (within resonable costs ofcourse, say $2-3g?)
 
got a 720p LCD on the wall, ready and waiting. Only component or VGA in, so I might be fucked with bluray movies, but that'll need me to upgrade from my 480p projector to a 1080p one. Not sure they'll be out in 06, but I can hope (panasonic, are you listening?)

Look around, you might scare yourself. LCDs can be had for around £1k for a 30" 720p set.
 
i'm holding off on the HDTV till later this year and closer to xbox 360's launch. i'll wait till then to start researching and looking for deals on the tv i want

But I thought LCDs sucked, since they're made only for a certain resolution? :P

It will depend on the developers I guess. AFAIK MS won't force the devs to have both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, but I'm sure most will remember that the vast majority still owns a 4:3 TV.

Or, you could always give the Toshi to her parents as a gift, thus opening the door to a new HD set for you. ;) :)

I'm buying an HDTV this year for sure... but if Nintendo confirms no HD, then no way.
 
Nope. Not even close. Don't plan to be either. I'll invest in HD when more than 50% of cable is broadcast in HD, and not a minute sooner.
 
Theres a decent range of HDTV sets starting coming out in the uk at decent prices now (even though we won`t get HDTV till next year). And have just purchased myself the Samsung LE26R41B, which is essentially the 26 inch uk version of the one Microsoft are putting in their xbox 360 booths.

and you're in Europe? Well you're pretty much fucked unless you buy a super expensive HD plasma (with its own share of image issues), or a DLP rear projection.

I doubt any manufacturers will bring out HD CRTs in Europe - LCD is starting to take off now.


LCD is fine if you get a good one, and they are improving fast.

1080p on 30inch or less Screen??! I was total here few times that would be pointless and would never even be made.
 
After looking into the options (DLP, LCD, etc) late last year, I think today's HD is kinda "meh." CNT or bust. I'd also settle for a 36"+ version of the slim CRT's (Vixlim) coming out.
 
Sorry I thought they posted out to Europe. That's the LCD people should get though. It's a real bargain for such a high quality set (RRP is £1200 for the 32" set, £800 for the 26" set)

If I know myself right, I'll probably give in. But I will only get a new TV if it supports 1080p.

FYI:

I wouldn't hold my breath on the slim CRT's. If the Samsung's are any indication, the technology has a way to go yet. The reviews I've read aren't good so far. The problem is, when you shorten a direct view CR tube that much, the gun is firing at some pretty steep angles on the screen periphery.

When you're ready, go and take a look in a good store. You may be pleasantly surprised.

And if you are looking at around 30-32", don't be fixated on 1080p just because of the numbers. Bearing in mind you will watch from a few feet away (not like on a PC monitor), you probably won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p - that goes to pcostabel too :)
