Specifically sword and sorcery? The Thraxas series is pretty fun.

It's about a detective who used to work for the kingdom until he was kicked out for being drunk all the time. He can cast minor magic (he used to be better until he got drunk all the time) and is a good swordsman and detective when not drunk.

Also, it's hard to recommend these books because objectively, they aren't very good... but I love them, and always have.

Narnia books are classics and I recommend them to anyone who is just getting into fantasy. The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and Matilda by Roald Dahl were the first two fantasy novels I ever read.

I have to second (or third) the Lyonesse trilogy, or at least the first book, Suldrun's Garden. Also, the first book of the Dying Earth series.
