GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Well I obviously tried that already, it won't let me select USB unless I'm returning from a program that was reading from the hard drive, then I can select it but the screen goes blank for a few seconds before displaying the homebrews on my SD card again. There's nothing wrong with my HDD, I can still use it with other programs just fine.
Sounds like your hard drive might be powering down and the new HBC code doesn't power it up properly. I can't think of a method to fix that, unfortunately. Perhaps you should fire off an e-mail to the hackmii support forums and it may get fixed in the next version.

OK, I've released a new modification of TBR to allow for installation of cIOSes on 4.3 virgin Wiis. It's using methods that have been known for a while now, but nobody made an app secure enough for me to recommend in the tutorial, so I just made my own :). Only problem is that I don't have a virgin 4.3 Wii to confirm my mods work, so if you've been waiting, let me know if it works or doesn't.

I should be able to test this tomorrow.

Is there any other channel launcher for USB Loader besides that horrific black one? :(
I use the XNE-like interface, btw. Love it to bits.

Need a little bit of help, guys and gals.

I bought a 320GB WD My Passport Essential today because I want to load the games I'm currently playing so that I don't need to keep switching through multiple discs each time I game hop.

I tried formatting the drive to wbfs, but it doesn't want to work. It is formatted as an exFAT drive and I am now trying to format it to a regular FAT32 drive. I have got the FAT32FORMAT GUI from the always helpful NeoGAF tutorial page, but I don't know what the allocation unit size should be selected as.

Please help me!

If you're Wii is newish, then there is no way for it to play DVD discs. If your Wii drive can read those discs, then MPlayer CE is the app you want to look into to watch them, I believe. Make sure you install the IOS202 that it asks for.

There's a few here and you cna find others by searching for "Configurable usb loader forwarder" and other similar searches

Clipper, your Trucha bug Restorer MOD worked great on my brother's virgin 4.3 Wii. The only (minor) problem is that it seems to activate the burn-in protection dimming as soon as it boots. It goes away as soon as you make any input, but it's a little disconcerting.

I love the horrific black forwarder. I wish I had its music as an MP3.

Which one is the XNE-like interface, btw? I use coverflow 3d

.
.

Oh, I've got a question... The main reason my brother is doing the homebrew thing is he wants to play Another Code R. Does he need a region-free app or can he just install it and run it with USB Loader? He is NTSC and looking to buy a PAL disc.

Yay, I'm glad it works.

As for XNE, it's a theme, not a style. I think it's one of the default ones shipped in the zip, but if not, it should be available via the theme download options within the loader.

And yes, Cfg acts as a region free app as well. Just install the disc and play. However, you may experience graphical issues if you don't have a good TV.

So I'm pretty green as well when it comes to homebrew and I've wanted to get into it for a while, so I got a Wii a couple months. Stupidly enough I updated my Wii to 4.3 and I'm not sure there's anyway to hack it now. Is there a way to work around this or should I just play the waiting game?

You're in luck. Check the Mario image two posts down from the top of this page. I recently updated the tutorial for people in your situation.

However, you do have one slight problem. In order to hack your Wii, you are going to need Lego Indiana Jones, or if the WIi is a US Wii, you can also use Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Monster Hunter was a bit of a pain to get going, but at least we can just leave Animal Crossing permanently in the disc slot once again.

Dragona Akehi said:
A pain? You just have to have it load IOS222. :P

Thats what I thought. Started from scratch once again, and it still doesn't work, yet other IOS222-dependent games do.

I guess it's just my wii playing up. I guess it'll be the one game stuck in the disc drive from now on...unless I decide to play Metroid Prime Trilogy. :lol

IOS222 is not the only one that can use IOS37 as base. You can also reinstall IOS249 with base 37 as well to get MHT going.

So I'm thinking about going the homebrew road with my Wii. Once I have done this, can I go back to official firmware if I ever want to or is this not possible anymore?

Homebrew on the Wii does not replace the firmware. You install a channel and also some additional IOSes, which are essentially little mini-OSes, but the original firmware remains 100% intact. That all assumes you follow the steps in the GWHT (look for the Mario image), as there is some other stuff out there that will mess with your firmware and screw it up.

Dragona Akehi said:
You do know you can make it automatically save the preference to load Tri with 222 right? Right?

Yes, but having to go through putting IOS236 on and then merging 37/38, etc, etc is the pain part I was referring to. Not the loading of the game itself. :lol

Ok, cool.

This is safe to do? I really would like to be able to access the Wii Shop. Sorry, I'm kind of catious with this kind of stuff :)

I need help. :(

For about a month and a half now, I've been getting this message upon booting up my Wii:
"unable to access Mii channel data. Please access the Mii channel and check Mii channel data."

When I go to the Mii channel, this is what I'm told that my Mii channel data is corrupt and I need to do a format to delete it.

Note that I haven't used the Mii channel since, oh, December 2006, so I find it pretty odd. I don't give a fuck about Mii data, but I'm sure formatting will delete everything else, too (including homebrew).

I was willing to just ignore the annoying pop-up message on booting. However, in this month and a half, I've also noticed an increase in system freezes.

Then this week when I went to use WiiSCU to update my shop channel and IOS so that I could get Ogre Battle 64, I was unable to do so. No matter what I tried to download, I instantly got a "bad hash" error message and got kicked back to the HBC.

Thoughts on how I should proceed?

v57 of Cfg has been released. If you haven't been keeping up with the betas, here's a short list of the bigger features that have been added since v56:

* new options for video patching: video_patch = [0], 1, all, sneek, sneek+all
* HBC 1.07 support
* Theme downloads with previews
* Using select = random option in coverflow scrolls covers to next game (usptactical)
* new option: select = [previous], start, middle, end, most, least, random
Selects which game is picked by default on startup.
The new default is the previous game played (to get old
operation, set select=start).
'start', 'middle' and 'end' refer to position in the list.
'most' and 'least' refer to number of plays (in Cfg).
'random' selects a different game each time.
* new button action: random
Selects a different game at random from the current list
To use, assign to a button, like button_Z=random
* .wip patches now working
* New per-game option: clear_patches = [0],1,all
When on (1) return_to_channel and the dvd check are disabled
When 'all', then all .dol patches are disabled
* Patch for Prince of Persia
* new option: disable_pop_patch = [0], 1
* new option: disable_dvd_patch = [0], 1
* new option: adult_themes = [0], 1
Adult themes only shown for download if switched on
* Added warnings for stubbed IOSes (gannon, Wiipower)
* After ripping a disc, you can push 1 to download images
* new option: return_to_channel = [0], JODI, FDCL, ...
Games will return to the selected channel ID
e.g., JODI for HBC or a forwarder channel
to reload Cfg.
0 is the default Wii Menu operation
Note: write_playlog won't work if you don't go back
to the Wii Menu between games (only the last game
played will be recognised in the log)

Everything in the GWHT is safe.

Well, this thread just HAD to be at the front page today didn't it?

I finally re-bought myself a Wii today - £70 for a used one at Blockbuster was too good to pass up- along with Madworld, Trauma Center, Endless Ocean, Opoona and a rental of SMG2 (It came with a months of rentals). So what was the first thing I do? Yes, check this thread, notice that the FW of this Wii was 3.1 and thought "What the hey"

I am now installing thew WiiSCU WiiShop update, after a really simple process to install BootMii and the Homebrew channel, many thanks to all who have made the wiki as it is dead simple to follow.

Now, onto the fun world of Wii homebrew, wish me luck!

Clipper said:
This is almost certainly not homebrew related. Also, your Wii might be OK. Unplug it from the wall for about 10 minutes and then plug it back in and try switching it on again.

Oh, also remove your SD card.
thanks, this worked

strange though

Waninkoko has released rev 20 of IOS249. It has support for more slots and more base IOSes. One of these base IOSes (56) seems to have the best qualities of both 37 and 57 and means we can now have one IOS that plays everything with fast load times to boot.

I'm just about to update the tutorial now.

I think I read somewhere that Gamecube USB Loader was possible... Is that true? And what page should I follow for details?
There is an app in the works but it has not been released yet. A page will be added to the GWHT when it is.

Uh, you still won't be able to play GC games with anything other than a GC controller.

Can you confirm that that IOS actually does play everything?

Also, for the Cfg update, does that mean if I update PoP will play correctly automatically?

So it'll work with the FAT version of CFG as well, I'm guessing?

Not necessarily true. What crediar is doing is rewriting the IOS that controls GameCube mode allowing the Wii to maintain access to all of its hardware. Now, it may require additional coding to get the CCPro to work but...

Htown said:

Well, I can't test everything. Others have tested problematic games like Monster Hunter and USB mic games and they all work so far. I've personally confirmed that it is as fast as 57 for SSBB. If there are complaints down the line, we'll amend things, but it seems like 56 is a good catch-all for the time being.

As for the Cfg update, the only other thing you may need to do is turn on the "Clear Patches" option. That should only be necessary if you are using Hermes' IOS or a really old version of Wanin's.

So I've gone through the tutorials today and everything works like a charm! :)
Many thanks to the people involved. Probably radioheadrule83 and Clipper.

Quake on the Wii is awesome :D

Upgraded to 249rev 20 and newest non-beta usb config.

When config loads it says 249[FRAG] at the bottom?

Also is anyone having issues with Arc Rise Fantasia?

What kind of issues? I played about half an hour of the game via Configurable and didn't notice any problems. Then again, I haven't updated to the latest revision of 249.

There is apparently a point during ARF where the game commonly crashes with some IOSes as base. If you installed using base 56 as suggested in the tutorial, then you should be good.

I'm getting random freezes after anywhere from 1-5 minutes of play. I've deleted and re-ripped played farther through with the disc and tried the hdd again with the same results.

I'm about 6 of playtime.

Yep followed the tutorial and tried other games on the hdd and they are fine so it's something limited to ARF and I've read about the freezing but I'm past that point in the game.

On the off chance it's this old pos hdd I've been using I'm going to try another one I have. I'm supposed to put musIc on it for my mother-in-law but I can test it first.

I would like to echo this sentiment. Using the GAF theme with the cfg loader is too awesome, as is the ability to put all my games on my USB HDD and leave them nicely on my shelf.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out on this thread and made that wiki.

I have done the DoP shop fix for my wii to get it working, the shops loads up ok but everytime I go to download I get an error Code come up it has taken my wii points (tried downloading to both SD card and Wii memory)

Did you ever download anything before? It sounds like it might be related to your network connection, but I'm unsure.

Now that the HBC update is out, you could just update to 4.3 via Nintendo's installer and see if that fixes things, but I seriously doubt it would have any effect.

I have installed a new home brew channel update it has given it a new skin, this auto update message came this week so done it, will this allow me to install 4.3? and have the HBC still working? or do you have a link to what i need to do? many thanks

Yes, the new HBC survives the 4.3 update. You would then need to reinstall IOS249, IOS222 and IOS223.

Before you even attempt it, I'd retry the shop update, though.

Sweet , i will do that assuming the HBC channel runs that should mean my USB loader will work still? I think I have the IOS files on the SD card.. will try tonight :D

hopefully Cavestory will come Pal land soon

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!
