GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Not to back up your game if you have the disc. For instance, I bought the PAL Xenoblade and wanted to play from the usb rather than the disc. I put in my disc, it rips it to the usb, and I can put my disc away and not worry about it getting scratched or whatnot. Nothing illegal about that, just backing up a copy of something I own.

Downloading a torrent of a game you don't own and putting it on a usb is illegal though.

Wouldn't backing up a rented game also be illegal?

Softmodded my Wii a while back in case of dire circumstances of importing Xenoblade (yay NOA isn't 100% dumb) and getting CC support in DKCR. For some reason today I was inspired to make the full plunge to using USB Loader after I realized I had an 8GB USB drive laying around. Starting playing around, got everything working.

Then remembered I had a 300GB drive sitting dormant behind my monitor. Dug that sucker out and formatted and moved everything over. Installed my copy of SS and am working on DKCR now.

Huge thanks for setting up the GAF Homebrew site. Absolutely the best source to get this stuff all figured out.

EDIT: However a note: the cheat file cfg tries to download for Skyward Sword throws parse errors due to there being too many codes! I had to manually go in and edit some out.

I have did this to 4 Wii's over the years for my siblings and myself using this guide. This time I tried NTFS and just couldn't get CFG USB Loader to work. I added the 2 extra lines in the config file and everything, still it would just hang at the start-up screen. I formatted my usb drive to fat32. re-ripped the games and it started right up.

The Wii was a used 3.2u from Gamestop. I installed boot2v4 and updated to 4.3u.

Any guesses to why NTFS didn't work?

I finally got my hands on my copy of Xenoblade. Since my Wii is broken, I borrowed an ancient Wii from my nephew, turns out it was on version 2.2u.

I want to install Hackmii (as led by the guide on Xenoblade thread) but the bannerbomb method (http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/index.old.php) seems to only work on 3.0 and above. Do I have to use the Twilight Hack?

Probably because NTFS is a sucky filesystem.

It's less sucky than FAT32, and it's less sucky than WBFS, so the anger might be a little misplaced. No one is ever going to bother to rig up ext3/4 or ZFS or HFS+ or heaven forbid Reiser.

The most likely candidate for later support that's not supported now would be exFAT and until Linux support for exFAT is a bit more robust there's not going to be a reference implementation for people to grok to do an implementation for whatever embedded systems, be it the Wii or something else.

Edit: Also, just speaking from experience, I deal with a lot of high volume networked storage, and if you think NTFS is bad because it's closed and proprietary, wait until you need to deal with a Quantum StorNext implementation and you're stuck waiting weeks and weeks for support to activate your license because you need a license for your file system client to connect to your storage array. *projectile vomits*

Sucks for them.

:bow Ext3/4.

ZFS is pretty awesome too.

Stump, well you're the head honcho boss, couldn't you just say no to NTFS? :p

You could perhaps set up NAND emulation to emulate your old NAND on the new Wii. I don't know if you can still use the Wii Shop if you are doing that, but it would allow you to use your current purchases, provided your old Wii is able to make a BootMii backup without issue.

Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten round to learning the ins and outs of NAND emulation, so I can't give you a simple tutorial.

Hrm, to answer my question from a few weeks ago, Betwiin seems like it could do this by transferring the whole NAND over to the new Wii. But it seems completely noob-unfriendly. Will have to explore options for just copying channels and save data over...

Edit- Actually Betwiin doesn't work for paid channels... argh.

Does anyone have a good forwarder channel for the GBA emulator? I'm using a fairly meh one I made in CustomiseMii.

I second this but for the CFG channel. Any videos that show off what the latest and greatest is capable of? I see there is one download and then an alternative but no videos of what they look like.

-GBA channel = The one in the Homebrew Browser (random clip)
-CFG channel = Alternate/second one (intro picture is the recent 'CFG' logo') was my favorite. Both are the same, just different intro... (random video; but the person changed the intro-music)

Hello. I have recently got a second Wii, PAL 4.3 firmware (black, with the GC ports). I've followed the homebrew wiki, managing to get the channel, CFG etc. installed, and it;s all working fine. I downloaded the latest version of Gecko via the Homebrew browser. When I select it in the Homebrew Channel though, I just get a black screen and nothing happens. I wanted to play my NTSC copy of Mario Party 4 on it (GameCube) :(

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Slayben - on your Wii should be fine :)

Got a super n00b question. Should I format the SD card on the Wii or my computer? I haven't taken it out the package yet.
It will probably already be formatted as FAT32. Just leave it at that. If not, format on your PC. The Wii can only format to WBFS and that is really not recommended.

Likely you need to force video. You might want to try booting the disc from Cfg (push '-' to access the menu to do this).

I done all the IOS changes, can I delete the programs?
Yep.
Once you install/update IOS you can delete them directly from the Homebrew Channel.

You can download the Homebrew Browser and download a few apps (like FTPii and/or Wii Explorer) to add/manage/edit/delete content from the SD Card without having to remove it all the time. (like for example, in case you for example, install the CFG Forwarder Channel and want to delete the 'wad'; you can delete it that way.)

So I have a strange little issue.

When I boot the HBC from the Wii menu, my WM+ controller stops responding. I mean, this happens with all remotes, it disconnects and I usually press A to reconnected when the HBC menu loads, but for some reason I cannot reconnect with my WM+ controller. The 4 indicator lights do not even flash like they're supposed to when you press any button. Its as if its connected to the system still, but no lights are on at all. When I switched to another controller, it connected as player 2. When I loaded CFG it crashed.

I tried again a few times, the only way I was able to get the lights to come on on the WM+ after launching the HBC was by hitting the red sync button inside the controller. Still, it never connected.

I have yet to test it by booting direct to HBC or if it even works after getting a game running, but I'll report back on that.

And now a completely separate thing. Is it possible to run cheat codes via CFG without the game being installed. Basically, I don't feel like futzing with my limited storage space, but I'd like to use some "usability" codes with Skyward Sword. Can I put a proper GCT file in the appropriate folder and have them work when I simply launch the disk through CFG, or should I download some other app.

You should perhaps ensure the remote is properly synced to the Wii. In the Wii Menu, push the sync button on the controller, then the one on the Wii in quick succession. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem is, unless it's a third party remote or the batteries are nearly dead.

And yes, you can use cheats while playing game from disc. When you use the disc launching method, you will be given the opportunity to change options for the game before launching. In this menu, turn ocarina on and select the appropriate hook type (you may need to experiment to find the correct hook type for the game), and any compiled .gct files for the game should then be applied. You can also load the cheats using Gecko OS.

I have three partitions in my HDD:
NTFS for PC stuff
FAT32 for Homebrew (since it only support it)
WBFS for Wii games

Why not use FAT32 for Wii games as well? Then your homebrew and Wii games can live on the same partition and it's a bit less nasty to manage should you ever run out of space on the wbfs partition?

WBFS works fine for me, never had a problem, I know that I can store my Wii games in FAT32 but I prefer keep that partition hiden. I have plenty of space on my WBFS, I can assure you that =P

I'm having a hell of a time getting NTFS to work.

No matter what I do, CFG won't see the games on the drive. Where do you put them. Do they go into the root of the drive, or do they go in a folder.

I've added the NTFS stuff to my config.txt, but nothing is working.

I'm upgrading my drive because my wife got me a 1.5TB hard drive for christmas and I'm putting moving my wii games to my other 1TB hard drive.

I had this problem last night, put them in a folder at the root labeled wbfs. It worked for me, but I might be doing it wrong.

Is the Wii picky about USB drives?
Yes. Most work, but some just don't for some unknown reason.

Install the games from the discs and you won't have a problem. I'm not gong to discuss the naming scheme and other stuff you need to get other games on there as that is only really needed if you are downloading pirated games.

OK, I got the USB loader to work. Question though, it says the format is FAT1, not FAT32, is that the same thing?
It just refers to it as FAT. I says FAT1 as it is the first FAT partition.

Ah, I already did the formatting with GParter to set it up as WBFS now, but I guess it didn't matter.

I wasn't planning to do USB installs but since good ole cost cutting Nintendo decided to include a game in some AOL-esque paper insert with the Wii, my New Super Mario Bros disc has a small scratch on it that I don't feel like adding to taking it in and out of this sleeve. I'm guessing a small little scratch won't have any effect on the ripping process though if it completes successfully and the game boots fine from the loader, correct? I don't know if games are like CD's where you can get "skips" in the rip or not.

Thanks for your help. Its an official black WM+ built in. I believe its synced properly. I mean, its something you do so rarely that its easy to be unfamiliar with. But I believe the proof of that is the ability to power the console with the remote in question, right?

Just tried it from booting direct to HBC now, the lights just keep blinking when I get into the channel and the controller never connects.

I tried launching HBC from the Wii Menu again just now. Still blacks out. Lights don't even respond. I connected a standard Wiimote, it showed as Player 2 again. This time I got CFG to launch. WM+ doesn't work there either, still completely unresponsive, no lights. Again to the standard wiimote to launch a game. As soon as normal Wii software begins running, the WM+ controller comes back to life.

So weird. Am I experiencing some new security feature? Its a brand new official controller that I got on the 24th. Its easy enough for me to work around at the moment.

Thanks for the help, but I think I'm just going to partition my new drive and use wbfs again. I don't have time to re-rip all of my wii games again (between work and taking care of my sick son).

I finished Skyward Sword off of my disc and I used Gecko OS to use the codes to shut Fi up and speed up the text, made the game so much more enjoyable.

When I sold my first Wii I put all of my games onto my PC as isos for use with Dolhpin. There is a program called wiibackupmanager that will put them back onto an external hdd with the proper folder structure.

Although this didn't help me get NTFS working any way and instead of being patient and copying the games from the HDD back to my PC I just formatted the HDD to fat32 and re-ripped the games I wanted to play.

I'm not sure what the problem is. All my Wii Remotes, including some with included MotionPlus, work just fine in the HBC.

Then again, perhaps there is an explanation... Have you perhaps not updated in a long time? If so, then the IOS that the HBC is choosing to use may not support the MotionPlus. This might be fixed by either reinstalling the HBC (which would probably choose to use IOS58 now if you have it) or updating the Wii.

Thanks for the help, but I think I'm just going to partition my new drive and use wbfs again. I don't have time to re-rip all of my wii games again (between work and taking care of my sick son).
There is also a transfer method that allows you to copy your games over from WBFS to FAT or NTFS in the tutorial. It'll take a few hours once you start it, but it's automated so you can do it overnight.

Yes, but I would say the easiest thing to do is just to update the Wii to the latest firmware. All the steps in the wiki work on that.

Though if you are unable to due to do that due to not having a wireless connection or whatever you'll have to update off a disc. Games such as Mario Kart Wii will have a firmware newer than 3.0.

Quick question.

Brought a £2 USB enclosure on ebay. Shoved in a 160gb HDD. Works fine on my PC, but doesn't recognise on the Wii.

It has a two way usb adapter (one for power, one for data), so maybe thats why? I've tried it formatted in NTFS, FAT32 and WBFS, but still no luck.

you know you have to use the lower USB port on the wii?

just asking...

The two cable thing shouldn't be an issue, provided you are using the correct port for the data connection. Some enclosures and especially those which include USB hubs just don't work, though, unfortunately.

Hi Clipper, how can convert my .wbfs, .wbfs1 splitted files into just one wbfs file?
I receantly convert my wbfs to FAT32, and I now want transform my FAT32 into NTFS with my wbfs files not splitted.

You can do it with the app that is used for the WBFS to FAT transfer thing I linked above. You'll have to figure out the command line options to use for the app, but it should be pretty easy.

There is no benefit to joining the files, though...

Gotcha, I keep my FAT32 partititon then.
Another question, my old 500gb HDD run the games just fine, I receantly switch to 1tb and I experience lag problems, in Sonic Colors for example the music stops for a moment and then it resume, I hadn't this problem with my old HDD, what could be the cause?

I tested both under wbfs

That's spin down. Look for apps from the new drive's manufacturer to disable it.

Yeah, using the same port I've had my 16gb usb stick plugged into for ages

looks like it doesn't work. ah well, hardly a big loss

I know I might be the millionth person to ask such an "easy" question, but I've been trying and failing for the past two hours to get my Brawl (and other locked save files) off my old Wii so I can use them on my new one. I've read the GAF Wiki, Wiibrew, etc. I've tried Priiloader, Savegame Extractor, Savegame Manager, and StartPatch.

The old Wii is 4.3U and has Homebrew Channel, BootMii, and Homebrew Browser freshly installed. Any help would be full-stop, 100% appreciated.
