GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

clipper, does this change anything with the current state of CFG USB Loader and the older 2.2+ DIOS MIOS it's using?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33v2l1BhIHg

Is upgrading suggested when it's released?

I'm not actively developing Cfg any more. I believe the guys who added the Dios MIOS support to Cfg are still going strong with it, though. Any upgrade should be supported fairly quickly, if it doesn't already work upon release.

This probably isn't unheard of, but I really hate Wii homebrew and its cIOS bullshit with a passion.

I spent most of my day today following tutorials, reading FAQs, googling, browsing forums, installing cIOS, reinstalling cIOS (which I have no idea what's that about), the Wiimote is always disconnecting, trying this guys method, that guys method, inserting and pulling the SD card like a mofo.
And I still couldn't run WiiFlow, it just shows me me a black screen.

And I remember running it many a years ago, but something went wrong and nothing works anymore.

... did you really come into a thread about setting it up, that has a working, very useful and almost entirely painless wiki for setting up homebrew... just to bitch about it?

Yeah, I guess so. In fact a lot of times I would fall into GWHT which unlocked me from some situations. It's really good.

Still the end result was just a lot of wasted hours.

I will get back into it sometime next week and will learn this cIOS mumbo jumbo even if needs a phd. And then proceed to install all of them (why not?).

Needed to vent :P

So.. couple updates! The latest version of DIOS MIOS allows the loading of multi-disc games, which increases the compatibility by a lot. The only thing that's left now is support for audio streaming games (ADP format), but there's not a lot of exclusives that use that streaming format, so it's all good. The only one I can think of right now that's actually any decent is Eternal Darkness, but you can use Devolution for that!

There's also a build of the Homebrew Channel that's supported on Wii U, but nothing's been made public yet. The author of Devolution has a working version for Wii U but since the Wii U doesn't support Gamecube controllers, it's not really usable right now; there's a vid on Youtube.

Is there any issue with getting DLC for a game if you have homebrew installed? I assume I can access the shop like normal if I update to the latest version?

Yeah there's never been any problem using the shop or anything. They'll still take your money.

So it's been a while since I messed with any of this stuff, and the Wii Shop is telling me I need a Wii System update to update the Wii Shop channel. I'm currently on 4.3U, and I JUST updated the Homebrew Channel. Am I safe to do this update or should I hold off and try a Wii shop update workaround?

You're safe to update.

Alright guys, I've come here because I'm kind of out of the Wii Scene since like the new super Mario Bros Wii. (yeah that long). I have a Wiikey in my Wii (one of the first ones) and I've installed some of the homebrew stuff like neogamma to run newer games and whatnot. Now I've gotten some games like the new Donkey Kong and the new Zelda. However, the don't run when I try neogamma or the disc channel ? What do I have to do to get the games to run? I am on some really old FW, like 3.2 or 3.4 I think. Is it as simple as updating my Wiikey to play the newer games or I have to redo a whole process to get these things to work ?

thanks,

The answer depends on exactly what you are trying to do here. Could you please fill in what stuff you have and what you are trying to run? I mean stuff like regions of the console and games, disc types used, downloads, etc.

I just bought a 750gb portable hard drive to use with my Wii and I'd really like to load Gamecube games from it. I have it formatted to FAT32, but I'm really struggling to find a decent, free program that can change the cluster size to 32kb, which I heard is important. Does such a program exist?
I believe EaseUs Partition Manager can do it.

Sorry for the ignorance, but I have HBC on Wii 4.3U. Is it safe to update the Wii Shop channel? I don't want to lose anything.

NTSC region, I just want to play games from ''writable'' discs. Like I used to with my wiikey and/or Neogamma

We don't recommend that here as it seems to have a negative affect on the lifetime of the Wii laser and it is nowhere near as convenient as hard drive storage if what you want is to protect your original discs. For info on getting those techniques going, check my custom tag or click Mario in the second post of the thread.

Yes. You can update your HBC beforehand, just to be sure, but nothing in the current updates would delete or interfere with the HBC at the moment.

I have two questions.

It's safe to upgrade my homebrewed 4.1E Wii to the latest firmware, right? I have the latest HBC. I guess there is always a risk of bricking the console, but I haven't really messed with my Wii other than using a HDD loader.

Also, I currently have all my save files on both the Wii and a SD card. After I do the transfer, can I just move the save files back to the Wii from the SD card? I'll use the same SD card for the transfer if that matters. It's not that important if it works or not, but I thought that if I could still play my disc games through the HDD loader instead of wearing down the Wii U drive, that would be great.

Given you are using an HDD loader, you may want to update the IOSes as well (or reinstall afterwards) but the update is safe for you whether you do that or not.

Yes, that should work. I've been copying saves back from the Wii U to the Wii via the SD for some of my games (those that I imported, and hence can only play on my Wii right now) and it works fine.

Quick question! I'm using a temporary USB HDD (brother's old one from a laptop in a cheap case) until I buy a new (and bigger sized) one for use with my softmod Wii.

When I get my new one can I easily transfer stuff over using my PC? I thought about putting my discs in now and putting as many games as I can on there, but will I just be wasting my time if I have to do it over again when I get my new one?

Cool thanks. I've set it up as FAT32 cos I want to use DIOS MIOS (haven't installed it yet though having trouble downloading it, and the official site has locked me out for trying too many times this hour, doh!) and I'll do the same with my new one.

I never used this thread, but the homebrew on wii has been very fun this gen. probably just performed my last wii hack action (updating the shop channel). imo DKCR was the biggest beneficirary of this movement (and was the main reason I decided to softmod), it let us play the game the way the gaming gods intended. i wish something like this came out for Okami (maybe it did?).

I want to move my stuff from my Wii to Wii U, but keep the Homebrew Browser on the Wii.
I followed the instructions to update the homebrew channel via Hackmii, but the /apps/BootMiiHBCUpgrade/boot.elf application doesn't show up for me. My HBC is version 1.1.0 and below it shows IOS61 v.19.26...
My Wii is version 4.0E.

I also tried to boot into the excisting version of bootmii, but it boots straight back into the system menu, if I try to launch it from HBC.

What can I do, to get things into motion? It's strange, that bootmii doesn't launch and HBC won't upgrade by itself.

Edit: BootMii config editor still works, but I can't set it to boot directly into the HBC anymore and the homebrew browser didn't update to the latest version, because of a file-size(?) problem so I upgraded it manually - it loads a zip file and says: cannot open afterwards "Exception (DSI) occured!"

Edit2: I deleted the old BootMiiHBCUpgrade folder, startet HBC again, shut it down, recreated the folder with the new boot.elf and tried again. Still doesn't show up.

It sounds like your HBC is up to date, so you should be able to upgrade normally without any issue.

However, it is worth trying to solve this issue anyway.

Do you have enough space on the SD card left over? Try with a clean SD card (or at least delete something else off the card), perhaps. You can name that folder anything too, so try 'sd:/apps/thing' or something just to be sure it's not a weird issue with that location. Also note that as it does not contain a meta.xml file, it will appear at the very end of your list of homebrew. Another thing to try is temporarily renaming the apps directory and creating a new apps directory just with the HBC upgrade boot.elf subdirectory to be certain.

Space was not the issue, there was over 1GB left.
The renaming the update folder to anything other did not work and after that I renamed the app folder, created a new apps folder and started the HBC. Still nothing. Only after changing the sorting method for a few times, the hackmii folder showed up. No idea why, but I'm glad it worked. I 'reinstalled' (It had to be there before, but I couldn't load it) Bootmii with the boot2 method and it's performing a NAND backup right now.

Thanks for your advice :)

Transfer went well (The Pikmin stuff is brilliant!), but now I want to get the NAND back on my Wii and it says:

"Becking boot2...
Bootmii not found, too dangerous to continue![...]"

Which is weird, because I startet BootMii and chose the restore option through there. Any advise?

Edit: Ok, fresh BootMii install seemed to fix my issue. Restoration in progress.

Edit2: Done and Done - strangely I had my first Wii U "hard lock" in Wii mode while I wanted to get in to the Wii channel. could not turn it off or return to the Wii menu, while the console "established a connection"

I have been trying to update the system so I can get onto the Wii Shop and every single time I get error 32007. I've tried all the steps outlined on Nintendo's Tech Support page for the error, but nothing works.

I'm on 4.3U and the newest version of HBC. I have DIOS MIOS loaded. Has anyone else run into this? Is there anything I can do to get this thing updated?

Is it possible that you at some stage used Startpatch or another app to disable updates?

I did use StartPatch way, way back to disable the health and safety splash screen, but I also re-enabled that a long time ago.

Any other programs that I should look at that may have disabled this option?

I've been fiddling with my Wii homebrew stuff in the past day, and have successfully gotten wad manager to work and installed some wads, but now my Wii is trying to update off of my Super Mario Galaxy 2 disc, which it didn't try doing before. I tried using StartPatch, but I just get a black screen whenever I try to boot it, which is because I'm not using ios249, but ios248 since my ios249 is a stub. How should I go about fixing my ios249? Can I just do it by downloading a wad for 249 and then installing it using wad manager? I'm feeling pretty lost.

I'm on 4.1u by the way.

You likely installed something in one of the slots the update wants to stub, which is why it is asking you that. That's the whole reason why we use 248 instead. You should be able to tell StartPatch to use 236, avoiding the stub issue.

So I finally got into following the tutorial and installing the Config USB Loader Mod and DIOS MIOS. The only problem is I don't think my current USB Hard drive has the right cluster size as Gamecube games just won't load. I had an 8GB SD Micro card lying around, but I think it's only a Class 4 I had previously used on a smart phone. It works, but the load times are pretty load. My current USB Drive for Wii games and other files is nearly full, so I don't think it's worth the hassle to move everything around to reformat it, but I might if that's the best option. I tried formatting a new partition, but Easus Partition Manger wouldn't let me set the Cluster Size, it did for the SD card.

Just curious for those who have tried it. Would little Flash Drives work adequately. am I better off just finding a new, faster SD card, or do I just need to back up everything on my USB drive and reformat the whole thing? I do use this hard drive to store PC files and media too.

Hey all, will read the process guide on Homebrewing but just wanted to question something quickly.

I now have a spare Wii due to everything being transferred over to the Wii U and was thinking of keeping it purely as a GameCube games player. What I'm curious about is whether there is an application to let a GC Pad be usable from the main Wii menu, or a way to instantly boot up a GC Disc at startup instead of going to the menu, something like that. :)

Not that I know of, but you can use preloader to boot directly into the homebrew channel (which can be navigated with a GC controller) and launch your games from there using GeckoOS. (Or Configurable USB loader after you install DIOS MIOS)

So I've finally decided to try and back my Wii games up onto a 64GB USB drive. My Wii is having trouble reading discs, so this will be really helpful for that as well as hopefully run Dolphin later. I've got homebrew loaded on the Wii front page and now I would like to try to rip my games.

I have a few questions I was hoping someone could help with.

- Do I need to partition the USB drive?
- Is CleanRip the best app to use for this? I already have USB Loader GX.

Here are the two sites I was looking at for help and I'm not sure which direction to go with currently. The Clean Rip site doesn't really give any instructions, so I thought I'd ask here first.

The link via the Mario pic in the second post of the thread (or just click my tag) will take you to our tutorial providing our most common tips. You don't need to partition your drive, but you may want to format it. CleanRip is handy if you want to use your games both with USB Loading and Dolphin, but you can set up Cfg and most other USB Loaders to rip to a format that Dolphin would support too.

I've had homebrew set up and working for awhile now (since importing Xenoblade from the UK). I just tried ripping the Last Story this morning, however, and I started getting a read (XXXX) error (-2) message. Is my optical drive dying? Or should I clear some space from the USB HDD and try again?

Edit: tried again with more space on the drive (17+ instead of 9+) and it worked without issue.

Hey GAF, I'm trying to update my Wii Shop Channel through a System Update so that I can download the Wii U Transfer Utility from the Shop, but whenever I try to do the System update, I get Error 32007. I've tried both wired and wireless connections.

My Homebrew Channel is updated to the latest version.

What's going wrong?

NOA provide info on all those kinds of error codes

Either change router channel for better signal (unlikely as wired also affected) or change DNS setting on Wii to these two:
Click into the "Primary DNS" field and enter: 008.008.008.008
Click into the "Secondary DNS" field and enter: 008.008.004.004
Otherwise it might be Nintendo's end...

So I've finally gotten all my Wii and GameCube games on USB drive (didn't know the latter was so easy to do until recently!). I'd like to get my Virtual Console games onto the drive. It looks like the best method would be to extract them from the BootMii ROM backup. The closest to this idea I've found so far is emulating the Wii ROM with the USB Loader or something really complicated that I'm willing to try out unless there's a better way.

I searched for "virtual" from the GWHT but found nothing. Is there any means of getting images of the individual virtual console games? And if that's possible, will they work with the USB Loader (I'm using Configurable) or with Dolphin?
