GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Here's a question for you guys who've had bootmii for a while (finally got around to installing it as boot2 the a few days ago).

I've now got bootmii (boot2) AND preloader on my wii. 99% of the time I just want it to boot straight to the system menu so I have them both on autoboot. This is mainly because I'm not an idiot and only use preloader for the hacks and bootmii to make a NAND backup for the hell of it and for future awesomeness.

Now, if I hold reset my system boots to preloader. Is there any way to set things up so I can load bootmii first instead? I figure that's preferable, since if I ever need preloader I can just pop my SD card out.

I've installed WBFS Manager but it wont recognise my USB drive. Why? It's a Seagate FreeAgent GO 500MB. I've got half partitioned for standard use, and half partitioned for the ISO Loader. I've loaded all the games I own on, so I know the partition is there.

However, WBFS just wont see it, and neither will Windows see the inaccessable space. Instead, all it will show is the partitioned portion, and even then when using WBFS it wont let me access the partitioned portion, only when I close the program.

Any reason for this?

I have my Wii set up to autoboot to HBC from BootMii after 1 second. If I want BootMii instead, I just push the power button a few times instead of just once and it usually triggers. If you can handle a 1 second delay on normal startup, then go for it. Otherwise, you can always just take the SD card over to your PC and change the autoboot setting in the file and put it back. You shouldn't need BootMii all that much.

You know I hate to do this again (well, not really :p) but remember how I said there was a page on the tutorial that involved use of a WBFS manager? Maybe you should try to find it.

Sorry, no direct links this time. Wanting to use an emulator for a current system isn't a good enough reason to just give the info out directly.

Windows should show the WBFS partition as "X.XXGB (RAW)" and your normal use partition as "X.XXGB (FAT32/NTSC/whatever)"

If you're on Vista/Windows 7 as well, it should probably be bugging you to reformat the RAW partition whenever you plug it in. If none of that is showing / happening, then I'm not sure whats going on.

Your Wii reads the WBFS partition fine?

Does the WBFS partition have a drive letter? Without a drive letter no PC based manager can read it (but it'll still work on a Wii great).

From my experiance for WBFS partitions to have drive letters (and properly format) they need to be primary partitions (despite the name you can have multiple primaries).

To find out info on your drive you can do the following (windows XP here) Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Managerment (it is under storage)

Wrong. My PC wouldn't give me a drive letter. However, there is one WBFS manager that will still access the drive. Instructions to make it do so are on the page I keep alluding to in the tutorial, which I'm getting sick of just alluding to, so it is here.

Mine is a primary partition.

To find out info on your drive you can do the following (windows XP here) Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Managerment (it is under storage)
You can also just run "diskmgmt.msc".

I think the real thing on whether it shows up a drive letter or not is how the drive was formatted before you converted it to WBFS. I set mine to unformatted and used the Wii to format it, and it seems most people that follow the tutorial (which describes what I did) seem to have this same issue as me that almost no WBFS managers can recognise their drive.

I actually see this as a very good thing, seeing as there are so few non-piracy uses for WBFS managers. Fortunately, when there are uses, there is one manager that does the job OK. I discovered this in the brief time when it was necessary to use these to do the alt. dol method before the alt. dol on disc method made it obsolete.

Hmmm, Windows XP did give my WBFS partition a drive letter (and that's what I select with WBFS Manager 3.0.1, the one or two times I've ever used that program). The drive letter won't show up via Windows Explorer or My Computer, obviously, but it is accessible via Disk Management.

You need "full" covers. You can download them and put them into sd:/usb-loader/covers/full or set the "covers_path_full" option to point to them.

I did download them and put them in the "full" folder, I also wrote covers = full (or something similar) in the cfg text but coverflow still shows the no-spine no-back ones (if I hit up on the D-pad to make the back cover come up it's just blank).
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

I had issues getting the full covers to show up as well. It seems like they weren't auto-downloading if I already had some (non-full) covers in place. This was a few versions ago, though. What I wound up doing was wiping out the contents of all of my covers folders, then prompting Cfg USBL to redownload them. I did not change any settings in my config.txt.

Cfg USBL then proceeded to download pretty much all covers (front, full, disc, etc.) for all of my games.

You do not need anything that even approximates "covers = full" in the config.txt. The only options that deal with full covers are "cover_url_full", "covers_path" and "covers_path_full".

How are the images named? They should be .pngs with either 6-character or 4-character names to tie into the game ID.

Try adding "debug=1" into your config.txt. That will show you the exact directory that Cfg is looking for your files in at startup. Check the text it prints out and you'll see where the full covers should go.

Also, you have updated to the latest version of Cfg, right? We've only had full covers displaying since v37 or so.

Damn, I can't hook up my Wii online anymore since my Nintendo USB dongle stopped working on my wifi-less PC, and my PowerBook Pro is in another city and will stay there fro another full month at least. I have the LAN adapter which I've used easily a few times with my Mac when I had the wi-fi busy, but I can't seem to make it work with Vista(32). I'm so sick of having this console offline, damn.

Yep, I'm on v38b (I've dowloaded v39b now but didn't update yet).
Yeah, the images are named correctly, they're just covers from muntrue and it's not like they're not showing, again the covers "full" show themselves like "normal" covers (so that both the behind and the front of the image are showing splitting up on the front cover and leaving the spine and the back cover totally blank. This is if I put them in the default cover front folder, if I put them in the "full" folder they don't show at all.
Maybe I *MUST* delete all the other covers ( tiny front only, 3D ones, disc) and just have the ones in the "full" directory? That would be idiotic if so...

I'll also try the debug thing, thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, you shouldn't need to delete your other ones. That would indeed be idiotic. Try checking capitalisation of the sd:/USB-Loader/covers/full directory. Maybe it's some silly problem like that. "debug=1" should definitely show you where it is looking for images, though.

Also, just one more sanity check... you do have a config.txt file in sd:/USB-Loader, right? If you don't, it uses the directory where the boot.dol is as base instead of there. Maybe that's the issue (debug=1 will confirm).

Random question : is there any kind of "homebrew web browser" (not the Homebrew Browser) that would be maybe more functionnal than the Internet Channel ?

Thanks for all the help Clipper :D. Finally got the emulator working, and it was really a total waste of time. It's so unstable for me. I probably need to sit and tinker more but I think I'll wait for a more stable emulator release before I really dig in.

Otherwise, I will no longer ask stupid questions until I've thoroughlly searched your FAQ.

Ah, I would like to know this too, ive only just got into the Wii homebrew scene (Loving it!!) and was wondering the same thing when browsing through the apps the other day.

Got a DSi question - does the new firmware bring anything else OTHER than Facebook integration like more WPA connection options or some other under the hood updates? Facebook integration is meh (since the DSi camera is crap, heh) but if it added something like LEAP I'd download it right this second. I am hesitant to upgrade due to the fact that it kills flash carts and I was wanting to get back into DS homebrew again (SNES9X/Super Metroid on my DS Phat was sick, heh). Thanks!

Does anyone else on GAF own a USB Gecko?

If so, has anyone been able to use Wiird with the latest Configurable USB Loader? I haven't been able to as of yet and it seems like even if you turn on Ocarina in the game options, if there is no existing .txt file on your SD card supporting the game, you can't use Wiird in conjunction with the loader anymore.

I can't believe it started working just after I tried and deleted all the other covers :O
I probably had same strange setting buried in some files I didn't remember about...

Can't check the tutorial wiki from work, since it's blocked.

Just gonna ask a few questions. Any info would be appreciated:

1) Is the Wii soft modable nowadays? I assume the Twilight Hack has been pached...any other methods usable with the newest firmware?

2) Are there any decent homebrew emulators out there? Wouldn't mind setting up emulation for the stuff that isn't available on VC.

3) Will I be able to play DVDs? Probably would never use this feature...but I'd be curious.

4) Will I be able to play imports? Not sure if I'd ever use this either, but it'd be good to know for future reference.

5) Are there any limitations with a software mod when compared to a hardware mod?

1) Yes. That's what the tutorial is for.
2) Yes.
3) Yes, although it puts unnecessary strain on your Wii laser and may lead to early failure.
4) Yes. This was the only reason I installed homebrew in the first place.
5) No. In fact, the software mods are actually better than hardware mods due to the loading time speedup of USB loader.

Given your questions, you probably don't know about the USB Loaders. Basically, you can use your Wii to rip all your games to an external hard drive and play them off there. This speeds up load times for many games and even fixes bugs (one of the House of the Dead titles apparently doesn't stutter when turning corners or something). Also, doors in Metroid Prime 3 open nearly instantly and there are several other neat features. Plus, no more switching discs to play different games!

I forgot to post my results of upgrading to v14.

YEEESSS! No more long delay when booting USB loader.

With v13b, at the part where it first reads the contents of the HDD (no more than 30 seconds it said, HA!) it would sit there for a minute or even two minutes before it displayed my game list.

Now that part takes no more than a second or two.

Very nice.

Photos load faster on the DSi Camera, but I think that's the only other thing.

Holy crap. Can rip games straight from the Wii, and load them from a USB HDD? Wow. I never imagined Wii backup options were this good. How's the performance? Better than disc I assume? I'd just hook up a 250GB drive that I can put in a USB 2.0 enclosure, would that work out alright?

I'm excited! This might get me to play some Wii again...I'm always more likely to play games if they're all accessible to me without having to switch discs. :D

Yeah, loading times are massively improved. Some games that were downright unplayable (HotD I'm looking at you) are playable now running from my HDD.

Sounds friggin' awesome.

I should pick up HotD, since I've got a Wii Perfect Shot which I have yet to use.

It's almost tempting to pick up a small Western Digital 2.5" MyBook or w/e they're called and just tape it to the side of the Wii. Going to have to use a massive 3.5" external enclosure for the time being.

I've been wanting to mess with cheat codes a little for fun and while I could download the codes lately every game is getting a 404 error trying to get the codes, is there a new URL I need to change to in some config file?

The cheat site recently changed to geckocodes.org. v39c of Configurable fixed this. Have you updated recently?

One question: how does it work with games that have mandatory updates? Do you need to rip the update from the ISO?
It avoids the updates automatically, but as of right now, all updates are fine. There is no need to do anything to your games to get them to work (there is a handful of games that it is currently impossible to play by USB, though).

Thanks (nabs too!).

Any notable games that can't be played through USB?

Is there any reason why my SDHC card isn't recognized by apps? My kingston 4 GB microsdhc and 8 GB SDHC works fine with the SD channel and loading Wiiware/VC games from it, but if I try to load HBC or any homebrew app, it doesn't recognize that I even have a card anymore.

What version of the HBC do you have? They continually add support to more cards as they go. And there were a few versions where Nintendo's SDHC support broke HBC's.

Latest version (at least I think so), 1.0.3

It's not just HBC that's broken though, I have a channel forwarder for USBloader GX and that doesn't work either

When I try to load HBC with the card, it just doesnt show any apps at all. It gets into HBC but no apps shown

Of what?
Configurable?

Which reminds me..
Any updates ..of ..anything that I might've missed? New IOS? Homebrew? Stuff?

Any good site that tracks this?
The Wiki's latest entries has been about Homebrew games..so I don't know if something else has been updated, behind the scenes that might improve performance or small things like Brawl crashing during the How to play Movie or in the Subspace..or stuff like that...

I can't really recommend much. Nothing really seems to have a good mix of stuff. For updates to Cfg Loader, IOSes and so on, a good way to follow that would be to sign up to Wikidot and 'watch' my tutorial. That way you'll get an e-mail whenever I update something (which I do with every new version of Cfg Loader).

Try moving everything off the card, reformatting and then put your stuff back on. Sometimes that actually works.

i'm still on cios rev10, the games i have works no problem except for castle shinagami, which i havent played in a looong time

Funny thing is that it's a brand new card, like purchased a few days ago from newegg. Oh well, I guess I either have to stick with non-sdhc cards or switch the card every time I want to load VC/Wiiware and homebrew

For what it's worth, we have three games that sometimes go bonkers; House of the Dead Overkill, Pokemon Battle Revolution, and Guitar Hero. House of the Dead which we just bought used runs fine from disc, but with the Ultimate USB Loader, it skips quite a bit, and can actually break gameplay by trapping the player. PBR is generally okay, but we've had it hang in a couple of fights. Guitar Hero (although curiously, not Rock Band) are fine on disc, but can get out of synch on the HDD. All in all though, can't complain. :D

Don't do that. Get a 320GB USB powered Seagate portable HD. No need for a power supply then.

Rev 10 doesn't work with USB devices, meaning the Rock Bands, Guitar Heroes, Animal Crossing, The Conduit and some other games aren't fully supported. Rev 14 supports them all. On rev 10 you have to set the anti-002 option on every single new game you buy. Also, rev 14 is apparently faster. The only thing not working in 14 is SSBB, and the simple workaround is just to install IOS222 for that one game.

Still, try formatting it. It really has helped some people.

You're still using Ultimate? That thing hasn't been supported in months and is missing a bevy of features. Install Configurable USB Loader via the tutorial and you'll likely find all your problems disappear.

Edit: Seems there's now a way to change region of newer LU64 Wiis. For those that are interested, check here. You'll need this if you are buying a Japanese black Wii and want to have English menus and access the US store. Be careful, though. Bricking is a definite possibility.

Hi everyone!

I've had my Wii modded thanks to this guide for quite a while now (Thank you so much!) and just upgraded to CFG Rev40, CIOS Rev14 and the new versions of CIOS 222(36)/223(36+37) (rev3?). Everything seems to be working great, even better than before (yay, no more disc required for Metroid!), except for one thing: I can't get Boom Blox to start. Pretty much the only thing I haven't tried to get it working is deleting the game from the disc and re-ripping it. It loads, but then goes to a black screen and doesn't come back. It appears that the Wii is still running since the Wiimote light goes off, then back on again and the power button works.

Does Boom Blox (the first one, I haven't bought the second yet) work for anyone else with the latest CIOSes and CFG loader? Thanks!
