GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I just noticed that SNES9x GX received a huge update.

4.0.0 - April 4, 2009

* New GX-based menu, with a completely redesigned layout. Has Wiimote IR support, sounds, graphics, animation effects, and more
* Thanks to the3seashells for designing some top-notch artwork, to Peter de Man for composing the music, and a special thanks to shagkur for fixing libogc bugs that would have otherwise prevented the release
* Onscreen keyboard for changing save/load folders and network settings
* Menu configuration options (configurable exit button, wiimote orientation, volumes)
* Configurable button mapping for superscope, mouse and justifier
* New save manager, allowing multiple saves and save browsing. Shows screenshots for Snapshot saves, and save dates/times
* Experimental hq2x filter, contributed by michniewski

Sounds really neat.

Is there any development going on for the N64 Emulator? Everything else seems to be going great except this one.

Hey, I haven't followed Homebrew at all so I was wondering, has anybody released anything like an iTunes for the Wii? I'd like to be able to play .mp3s on the Wii while I'm working on the computer just as background noise, and while I have Finetune bookmarked in the Internet Browser I'm getting a bit tired of the same tracks being played repeatedly.

Thanks.

Out of curiosity: Why can't you just play the .mp3s on the computer you're working? Or do you have your Wii plugged into a home theater / sound system? Otherwise it seems kinda pointless to me :/

I tend to work in Corel Painter and Maya on the computer all day which are HUGE memory hogs, and I feel paranoid about having iTunes playing all my tunes in the background, so I try my best not to have it play on the computer and use something else. Nothing in my house is particularly well souped up audiowise so it doesn't make a difference to me about the quality.

Thanks Yoopoo, I'll try that lot out and see what works best!

I'm drafting up a quick and dirty tutorial to put up here for those of you looking for help in upgrading your 3.2/3.3 Wiis to 4.0 without ruining homebrew. Should be up by this weekend. It won't offer downloads or links to apps and protected files, but should suffice if you've already gathered the tools.

over at the Wii64 website, their latest update shows a video of apparently their latest build running a lot of games at at least 30fps with sound. But no other info. Not sure if its an April fools joke or not. :/

That would be great! I'm on 3.2u myself and after putting HBC on my Wii, I think I would like for it to stick around. I already have DVDx installed, but I'd like to know what else I'll need. Extra functionality is never a bad thing.

Ok, I tried to download and play some of the Homebrew games from the Browser, I downloaded alot of them, so I wanted to try them out.

First i tried to play the DOOM wii port one, but it goes black screen with some codes written on it and froze, I had to turn off the wii manually.

I started the system again and entered the Brew channel, I tryed to play Uno this time and the same thing happened, with the same message as the Doom one, I had to turn it off again.
Now I am afraid to check on the rest :(

So what is wrong here?

P.S. playng STARFOX with the classic controller is the best thing ever, I couldn't beat the 2nd transformation of the boss in stage 6 :(

Please give us the error message so that we can at least guess what the problem is.

I'd suggest removing any Gamecube memory cards you might have, and run scandisk on your SDcard to ensure filesystem integrity.

Just had a look around and seems region free is still working for 4.0, so I think I'll take the plunge. Currently on 3.2e, but would love to have all my VC games there for easy access and of course Majora's Mask. One thing though, in all the update instructions I've seen it says "No to install shop channel"

Does this mean I can't use the shop channel and it's just an update to use pirated vc games from the sd card? If I say YES then I assume I'd get the new shop channel and can download away, anyone else try this?

Isn't it as simple as updating if you have the homebrew channel ?

it was for me oddly enough. all the stuff i used before still works (including ripping games which i'd had to go down to 3.2 u to do). all my registry hacks are intact too. interested to know what i may have broken though. if it's playing 'backups' i don't care. never tried it, unlikely to ever try it.

rips to use on dolphin, region free and scumm vm is why i did it.

Does this involve installing anything to NAND at all? I can't install shit anymore because I updated via Nintendo, but if its just a preloader / DOL hack I might be able to do this.

I might use the source video I used for these to have a cool animated Wii logo replace the health warning scene. I might even use that Wii logo plong video/sound they use at the beginning/end of Wii adverts.

By the by, has anyone seen the Mario Kart Wii reskinning app?
Theres a thread for it at gbatemp... not only are people changing the textures, they've found a way to edit primitive flat track models. Hopefully in time, the application will become fully rounded, and people will be making their own tracks in the same way that people make their own Guitar Hero note-sheets

By the way I don't have any GameCube memory cards.
Ugh. That's a nondescript core dump. Drat.

Are you sure you're using the most up-to-date HBC and apps?
It could be that these apps are broken because the 4.0 bug/exploit fixes. Try others.
Do you have other SD cards? Try using them instead.
Did you eject/unmount/safely remove the SD card after copying the files on your PC? They may be incomplete otherwise. Format your card and install the HBB to try again.

I'm honestly a bit stumped by your problem. It shouldn't exist.

i dunno about other people, but i really dont see the point of adding an intro LONGER then the current intro
if it were me, i'd just get rid of it, save myself 3 secs of boot time every time i turn it on

I never did copy anything into my PC, I add stuff, I also only have a spare 1GB memory card.
I am pretty sure there was an update to the Browser that I did before i downloaded these apps, not sure how to update the channel itself though.

what is weird is that All the emulators I have work just fine, but these games just don't work, I'll check the other ones, I hope it is just from the new 4.0 update...(I don't wan't to believe I bought that 16GB SD for nothing! :x)

Thanks for the answer, I'll try what you suggested :)

EDIT:

it seems that some games work and some dosen't, The games that didn't work were Uno, DOOM, and Space Invaders.
The Games that worked were Dungeons(or something, it was an RPG), Wii-TAC-TOE, Duck Hunt and Wii shooting gallery.

I just deleted the ones that didn't work and kept the others.

Hey folks,

A little advice. I am fairly familiar with the whole homebrew deal as I have cfw on my PSP.
I never got into it with the Wii so I am starting from brand new. My Wii was last updated for
Mario Galaxy as I have hardly used it since. What do I need to do to install homebrew for
it now? Obviously I would like to install the 4.0 update goodies, etc... Please advise.

So, after moving some of my WiiWare games to SD I tried to access my SD from my PC, and it's telling me I need to reformat. Is there anything I can do to avoid this in the future?

I also updated to 4.0 with the homebrew already installed, but i thought we could still install stuff, what's with the NAND thing?

Ever since the 4.0 update I've noticed a few quirky things with the Wii.

* Often, turning on the Wii via Wii Remote "turns it on" but the screen displays no image and there is no sound. Essentially, the system powers on but locks up, and I have to unplug the power cord and plug it back in to get it to work.

* Starting either Shop Channel and Nintendo Channel FREQUENTLY causes the system to reset, back to the initial Health screen.

Has anyone else noticed this? The reset from SH/NC happened infrequently in the past... I'm curious if this is related to the HBC or not.

Got USB loader running and all of my games ripped to the hard drive. Loving it so far, I've got channels set up for the games my wife and kids play so they can just click and go, no disc swapping needed. This will save a lot of wear and tear on both the discs and the optical drive itself.

Many thanks to Mejilan for tips on getting the firmware where it needed to be.

Way late to the party on this.... But I've really been entertaining the idea of joining the club.

Quick question.... Can I add homebrew without doing the Twilight hack? I sold my copy quite a while ago. If there is no other way, I'll just rent a copy I guess.

Check out the wii hacking forum on GBATemp.net

I'm going to do a big OP update tonight... I haven't looked at the first page in ages, but I saw someone post about it recently and realised its way out of date.

OK, so I have a 4.0 Wii, which can't be updated at the moment, but assuming that there is a work around eventually, what's the word on using imported games. Once you've installed the homebrew channel, how do you go about launching these games? Do you have to launch an app every time you want to play them?

Honestly, I would like to completely stop supporting Nintendo of America altogether, so perhaps I should just look into getting a JP Wii instead. Then again, that would be inconvenient for the few US titles that I might buy (which is indeed a rare thing these days).

You have to load an app every time called GeckoOS. It bypasses not only region coding but any firmware updates that may be on the disc. It's honestly a fairly painfree thing to do.

There are several options for loading import games, but the main one everyone uses is GeckOS, which is a program that allows you to bypass disk updates and load import games. Usually, you'd have to launch HBC, then GeckOS, then the game proper; however, you can install GeckOS as a channel to simplify the process. Or, better yet, use preloader, a hack that allows you to boot into any application you specify, to start your Wii immediately with GeckOS.

If you are lucky enough to get a 3.2 Wii, you can use Starfall to bypass disk checks and launch import games right from the main Wii OS.

It takes like 1min to get to GeckoOS from the HBC and its so pain free that it amazes me of people still complaining that it takes any amount of time or is a hassle

If anyone is confused how it works just think of how the Freeloader worked on the GC and Wii, but without swapping the discs (since Gecko OS at its core is based on the Freeloader program)

Sounds pretty good. Hopefully they've find a way to use this with updated Wii systems. I wasn't really interested in homebrew until the Fatal Frame 4 incident, but after reading up on it, there seems to be a lot of interesting uses. I would be eager to take advantage of it.

I do not own Twilite Princess so I havent installed homebrew on my wii yet, but hopefully I will get a copy soon so I can do it well.

I recently bought a USB adapter for SC card to I'm one step closer ^_^v

Its worth it just to be able to play Disaster and Cap vs Tat, the Fatal Frame 4 deal just its makes it that much more of a necessity.

And god knows what else will not come to the US in the future, I have been a fan of region free and importing going back to the SNES

There will be a workaround, and more importantly, BootMii is coming. What BootMii promises to do is to essentially overwrite one of the boot codes so that when turned on, the Wii will immediately read the SD card for HBC. That means absolutely no executable code on the Wii's NAND (flash drive), so Nintendo would not only be unable to detect it, but further updates blocking HBC would be essentially impossible, unless they want to risk overwriting boot2 which always has the possibility (albeit a low one) to brick the unit.

The only thing is that later Wii units have a different boot1 that makes installing BootMii impossible as originally intended (there will be workarounds but not quite as good as BootMii installed as boot2). However if you have a launch or near-launch Wii, you should be fine.

The "new" boot1 Wiis only showed up after the Korean release.

not followed homebrew at all on wii, but someone said it has a c64 emulator. Is it any good?

Also, what else is recommended - emulators and games rather than multimedia? Pretty big thread to go through unless there is a good summary somewhere?

Don't suppose there is any way to run my US/JPN gamecube games is there? (have a PAL wii)

lastly (sorry for all the questions) - is it difficult to get ripped games onto channels in the main menu? I'd like to rip my son's games (esp. sims etc) to the main menu so he can launch them easily, and then hide my stuff (HOTD overkill, HOTD, madworld etc) away in the HBC. As it is, I can't put them all in one place

GeckoOS works on every version of the Wii. You can launch anything.

You'd have to use the USBloader, but I haven't played with it. It doesn't load them to the channel menu, either, but from the HBC channel.

To launch them from the channel menu you would have to do it via a wad which I think was disabled in the 4.0 update and requires going to the darkside to find the wad installer and instructions (I think)

I desperately want to buy the new Bubble Bobble tomorrow, but don't want to lose the ability to play Baten Kaitos Origins. If I update my 3.3 EU Wii will I still be able to use GCBoot or whatever it's called?
