GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Yes they can ban you, if they want to (but we don't know if they'll ever want to). They have been detecting and banning cheaters in Mario Kart Wii. The USB Loader would be easily detectable by looking at how long it takes you to load the next track, which the servers likely could get messages about (they have to ensure all drivers are ready before they start the countdown). I've got my whole collection on the USB drive, but I'm playing MK Wii on disc still.

Yeah, I'll still play Excitebots and Guitar Hero on the disc, too. I can't imagine a whole lot being gained from playing them off the HDD since you have to wait for the other people to load anyway.

Red Steel is freezing at the "Licensed by Nintendo" screen, does it not work when ripped?

EDIT: Nope, it doesn't.

How are you ripping your games?

USB Loader rips games from your wii disc drive to the usb drive from within the program. They call it "installing" in the menu I believe.

Animal Crossing works as long as you are using wireless, the LAN adapter and Wii Speak will not work.

Oh, and yes you can create a separate channel for each game, but I recommend against it. It's just more to clean up later if you need to remove them.
why won't the wiispeak work? there are 2 usbs!?

hm, so it's not save in means of future updates directly from nintendo? So waiting for BootMii to separate the starting procedure completely would be smarter, wouldn't it? I wanted to do this to my mothers Wii as well but as long as you cannot standard update in the future this is a nogo for me (so far).

thx :)

Due to a bug in the USB code of one of the hacks, you can't use ANY other USB device in the other slot. This should be fixed in the next version, but we don't know when that will come (should be soon).

You can update just fine. It's just that the update might undo some of the stuff you already did and you'll need to do it again. However, for the moment, it seems that the Homebrew Channel, IOS249 and USB Loader apps will not be broken by the updates, and that's all you'll ever need (BootMii will improve things further too).

When trying to follow Clipper's guide I get told ""Failed to add title, maybe you already ran this?". I tried using the WAD Manager 1.3 to install IOS35-64-v1040.wad but the app never does anything when I press A to select that file. Am I screwed? I've seen people mention WMIOS35; I have no idea what that is or where to find it.

At what point during the guide are you getting that error?

I just saw found this video showing off an overclocked GCN game running on Wii!
Don't know what it aims to do, but does this mean that someday we might be able to get GCN games to use like the classic controller or virtual memory cards?

Not because of that, no. Overclocking is an easy hardware mod. If they did it in software, then that's pretty impressive, but still doesn't prove they can get the GameCube to access the Wii-only hardware.

I do not know what they exactly did, but I THINK they did it in software.

Playing GC games while still in Wii mode is something I've dreamed of for a long time. I'm sure the way Nintendo did their BC was the simplest way to go about it but at least being able to go back to the Wii menu without turning it off manually would have been helpful.

For me it would be all about the controllers. Imagine being able to use the classic controller! Image how awesome it would be for games like Sonic Gems, Sonic Mega, Nintendo Puzzle Collection, Wario Ware, Melee, ETC.

lol.. I never modded my wii, and when 4.0 came out I was going crazy kicking myself in the ass for never modding it. Now that you can re-mod 4.0 Wii I have no urge to do it. I suppose one of these days I NEED to grab tatsunoko, but I'll wait until after E3 to see if they announce a localization of it first.

Having BC work as it's worked for every system up until now would've been perfect but Nintendo always takes baby steps. I guess we can wait and see if this WiiHD thing happens and what new features it brings although I fear that since Nintendo used BC as part of their excuse for the lack of HD that it may get dropped like GBA support from DSi.

I'm going to try to play Manhunt 2 uncut tonight. I read there's an Ocarina code that can be used to do it with, anyone know of it?

Now HBC is working, there's no way I can get Madworld to work in 480p through the magic of software, is there? I play through VGA, so I literally can not play the game as is.

I tried a little bit of TvC last night and i was pretty tired by the time I got it running but my god I couldn't make heads or tails of any of it. I'm going to look up some translation guides when I get home but I'll probably hold off on my plans to import Oboro Muramasa for now. I used to import all the Capcom Saturn fighters and I don't remember them being so Kanji heavy.

Doesn't seem to be anything out there. Your only solution may be a different screen, or a deinterlacing box.

nope, i'm in the same boat

and you can get 480i through vga i'm pretty sure, it's just if your monitor can display it

My monitor failed with one of the apps I needed to use to install the HBC because it was in 480i. Had to go use an old TV. Guess I'm stuck without Madworld...

Here's gbatemp's compatibility page of external HDDs that have been tested thus far: Link

I use a Seagate FreeAgent GO 320 GB but like it says on the page, it has problems with certain games when the drive goes to "sleep". All I've played so far is Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. TvC and SSSB loads up new information with every new match but in SMG, where I spend a bit more time in certain levels, it'll freeze up once I'm done with the level. I'll just stick to using the actual game discs for games that give me that problem.

Depends how many games you plan to have on there. I have 15 games at the moment with about 30GBs taken up.

Looks like that Compatibility List is down right now.. as is GBAtempt, actually. I'll be shopping around for a 120GB+ harddrive in the next few days, and wanted to print it out. Is there another source perhaps?

Remember this promising and nice-looking USB loader? Version 1.0 is out, and now it's called USB Loader GX.
It's based off USB Loader 1.1 (with some additions from 1.5), so it only requires cIOS rev9.

Features:
* The GUI is completely based on the awesome libwiigui by Tantric
* Widescreen support: Without any special themes for widescreen
* Global Settings and "per game" settings
* Parental control: Set levels for each game via titles.txt, set a password for install/remove/etc.
* Supports Themes: Create your own theme and use it with the loader
* Coverdownload: Download "normal" covers, 3D covers and discimages for all the games on your HDD (big thx to djtaz for hosting them)
* Look and feel like the original Wii Menu: Use rumble feature, button sounds, background music, disc slot lights up etc. (you can also turn it off in the settings)
* Loads all the needed files from your SD-card

There's a utility that turns the sleep mode off for your HDD. Look it up on gbatemp.

I can't find it, any chance you can point me in the right direction? I've got a Seagate external hard drive and it's very annoying when it goes to sleep.

I've never used it since I have the WD My Passport Essential 320GB.

Alright, gonna go through with the steps to get HBC on mine now.

What's the program you guys use again for loading your games? I want to put Metroid Prime 3 and No More Heroes on a device to free up time on switching the discs, as those are the two games I'm playing right now.

edit: nvm I'm dumb, it's in the tutorial.

I use Ultimate USB Loader 7.4 with a different skin.

Cover Flow looks pretty awesome and I have it also but there's a new version almost daily.

Thanks Fuzzy, I just disabled the power management controls on my HDD. I had to reformat my HDD back to NTFS since I had the entire partition set to WBFS. I used the software from the official site: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=3723b5b59b7d5110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD

That particular program doesn't work on my 64-bit Vista, so I used another one of my computers with 32-bit XP and set the sleep mode from 5 minutes of inactivity (which is what it was set at) to never. I then reformatted the hard drive to FAT32 and then back to WBFS and loaded up Super Mario Galaxy to see if it worked. I played one of the racing levels and paused the game for 45 minutes before resuming the race. I finished the level and the game continued on whereas before it would just go to a black screen when I had to return to the over world.

Time to rip back all the games onto the hard drive.

Question:

once I have gone through all the steps in the tutorials above to install HBC and USBLoader, can I remove some of the files and put some of my VC and Wiiware games back on it? WhenI load into the SD card menu now, it freezes.

Once you have the HBC going, you can delete everything except the apps you want to run with HBC (meaning USB Loader will need to stay). Putting your VC and Wiiware back is fine too.

OK, I've tried to get USB Loader up and running, but I'm having issues.

I'm running USB Loader 1.5, CIOS 10 under 4.0U and I get a no partitions found error (RET = -6).

I tried downgrading the CIOS to version 9 and that gave me a (RET = -1) error instead so that was a step backward.

My drive (an Iomega Prestige 320GB) is on the GBAtemp wiki. Any ideas?

Have you partitioned the drive? Have you tried the other USB port? Do you have anything else connected to the other USB slot?

The drive has been partitioned both as FAT and as WBFS (using WBFS Explorer) with no luck either way.

I've tried both ports and I have nothing plugged in to the other port at the same time.

It doesn't like partitions.. its best to have a WBFS drive only...

Partitions are fine with most modern loaders.
On that note, I'm absolutely loving Configurable USB Loader v29c.
It seems to do just about everything that Ultimate USB Loader used to do, only better and faster! And more.

Since it's 1.5-based, I've decided to reformat my drive (using WBFS Manager 3.0.1) and reinstall all of my games, making sure that all partitions of the DVD are installed, this time. The old 1.1-1.4 based loaders didn't install everything, as I understand it. Not sure what the benefit is, but I've got the space, so...
