GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

does anyone know where i can find codes to put in for Ocarina or Gecko OS? most of the stuff i've found is only for Brawl, which doesn't interest me. I'm looking for a code to remap the waggle in Galaxy to a button. is there like a site with a database of all the codes somewhere?

darn...no such code seems to exist.

if only it were possible to create some sort of universal button remapper for Wii homebrew, and then we'd never have to deal with poorly implemented waggle again. the trouble is, every game defines waggle differently, so it's hard to universally remap it.

OK, our tutorial now has all the information of Stump's old tutorial, and then some. It is not yet fully complete (doesn't have LU64 Wii support and info about Gecko/Homebrew Browser/upgrading firmware), but hopefully that will be done in a few days. In any case, we should be able to point most noob questions to it now as it gives step by step instructions for installing and using BootMii, Homebrew Channel and USB Loader.

Here's a simple way to post it (it would be great if this can go in the op too):

Thanks. It's pretty much just me so far, as I've been the only one with time, but I hope some other people will join soon so we can touch it up a bit.

I'd really love it if someone with a bit more graphical prowess than me could touch up our wallpapers for the GAF custom theme a bit. I want to put the NeoGAF Logo behind the games listing and make my GUI background a bit better off than it is, but I'm not good enough with Gimp to remove the shading from the background in the forums. Is there a better version of it somewhere? You can see my poor initial attempts at GAF theming here.

For bootmii or the system menu? system menu themes have been out for a while, use the softmii tweaks tool.

And yes, you can use it without having to install softmii or cioscorp or any of the other crapola in that package.

well i want to get rid of the stupid system menu with the music

I'm trying to install the IOS249 so I can use a USB loader.
I tried the cIOS36 installer from Stumps tutorial, but it fails with error -2011.
I tried following that "ultimate" tutorial on yafuze but it throws an error when trying to run DowngradeIOS35.

I'm on 3.3U, possibly with Oct 23 update I can't remember, it's near launch NTSC-U. Installed Bootmii in boot2, HBC etc fine.
I just wanna run games of all regions from a HDD if I can. I'm not sure if I need all those wads and cIOS's on that yafuze guide or not.
Any help please?

I've sorted this now - updated to 4.0 then followed the gaf guide basically. Had to reinstall HBC that was all.
Thanks to Clipper, Stump etc for your guides.

Question: does the USBloader save its options and downloaded covers and the like on the SD card? Wait, that was rhetorical, I know it does.

What I want to know is if there's a way to change that so it can save that stuff on the HDD itself? Because my SD card doesn't work anymore and I don't have a new one just yet. Seems like it should be possible to use all that free space on the HDD, no?

edit: reading up on this thread, it doesn't look like it. oh well. :)

I'm using the configurable USBloader installed as a channel (don't trust SD cards for exactly that reason)

So I know JACKSHIT about the homebrew scene these days. Hell I learned to install WADS 2 days ago :lol . I think I updated CIOS 249 to r13b... latest, right? HBC runs nicely, I installed DVDx and MPLAYER. So, I read some more about USB Loader GX I think. My DVD Drive is kinda dying, don't want to send back honestly, so I went back and purchased a External HDD on Ebay for like 20 bucks, only 40GBs but this is just a testbed. If it doesn't work then... pff. It sitll hasn't arrived, but I don't get it...

I connect the USB right? The program will format the HDD for me? Then... I just put my discs and it saves them? My DVD drive sometimes does the disc cannot be read err, happens all the time for MP3, but barely for other certain games, heck even Brawl works good.

Am I right on how it works? :lol

Basically, yep.
If you haven't got the cIOS installed right, USB Loader errors out straight away. So, you can test if that part's set now.
USB Loader can do all the formatting and ripping, it's all quite straight forward.

This looks to be excellent and now duly bookmarked. I just discovered my Wii, which I'd had for about a year but due to work and such had yet to put even a dozen hours into, was totally dead this afternoon. So, when I finally have a proper replacement, I may well give this homebrew thing a shot using this guide as a friend of mine has also recently taken to tinkering with it.

Be nice if there was a homebrew something that could spot/avert some trouble ahead on a system dying on ya... :( Guess I was just lucky all these other generations of hardward with them or something.

Hey guys!

I'd like to ask, does the configurable USB Loader have support for the cIOS 222? I'm getting tired of the spin down problems : (

Edit: yes it does, I didn't read the new log, :lol, sorry, thanks.

I use 223, and it works great. just remember to add the proper code in the config.

ios=222-mload or ios=223-mload

The most recent versions of Configurable do support USB data storage, with IOS222/223 at least. You need a FAT partition on the same USB drive as the games and it should be the first partition on the drive.

I think I might go and add IOS222/223 to the GWHT now (I had originally planned them, then removed them for simplicity). I forgot they had this use.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the useful tips posted here. Got my Seagate freeagent yesterday and today I succeeded in ripping Rune Factory Frontier. No more annoying dvd noise when going from one area to another :)

Oh, that would be awesome.

So, first partition FAT, second partition WBFS?

I already have the newest version of the USBloader (31c, I think), BUT I have cIOS36 rev10 from Waninkoko installed - that won't work?

If it's too much of a hassle/risk to find and install that other ios, I might just opt for a new cheapo SD card. But if this would work with waninkoko's cIOS, that would be just perfect.

edit: wait, I'm stupid, I would need an SD card to install another cIOS anyway. >_<

I might be wrong since I don't have the latest HBC, but can't you just use a usb flash drive to install the cIOS through the HBC? If you have one that's another way of getting it to work.

You can use something called Wiiload to run .dols on your Wii with HBC from your PC via network. No SD card needed. You will need to install the full channel app of Configurable from the Configurable thread first (not a forwarder).

On Waninkoko's, it may work with 12/13/13b but definitely won't work with 10. It will definitely work with Hermes' IOS222/223.

Edit: Thought I'd show off our new logo by Linkhero1:

followed this guide to get homebrew channel installed.

i only plan to use a usb loader but it also installed a channel called backup loader. what does this channel do, do i need it for usb use or can i uninstall it?

It only really allows you to do naughty stuff. Uninstall it.

Also, you don't have the latest version of the Homebrew Channel. Use our tutorial to install it (click the image two posts up).

uninstalled. what was the point of all the CIOSv7.wad, IOS36.wad and so on in that tutorial?

edit: never mind it was needed for the usb loader to work.

You need to do those on 4.0 Wiis to allow them to install files via WAD. BootMii uses a different hack to allow installation of the Homebrew Channel.

Edit for the new page:

So today i got a message to update the HBC, and i also installed the bootmii as a second ios, but i dont know how to use it.
Also ive yet to get an external hdd for my wii, but i have cios36 rev10, whats the latest version or the best one?

rev 13 is the best, but it has a bug which means you need to switch off your Wii between loading different games.

A button should have appeared in your new Homebrew Channel (assuming you upgraded it too) to allow you to launch BootMii.

when i partition my drive to WBFS do i partition the whole thing or should i create more than one partition with different formats?

Create one WBFS partition on your drive (the whole thing).

I'm using a drive that has 2 partitions, one WBFS and the other FAT32. Just make sure that the WBFS is also a primary partition and you should be fine to have multiple on the one drive.

edit: I'm doing this because I use the drive both to store data and for my Wii. If you are solely using it for your Wii you might as well do the whole thing WBFS.

I am certainly no expert, but depending on the size of your drive you might want multiple partions. In my case I had a 1 tb drive and a modest collection of games so multiple partitions was a no brainer

Just installed the HBC and I'm loving it so far. What's the best way to avoid losing the HBC/bricking my wii? I am especially worried about the latter obivously...

Why's this? I've 13b installed and seem to be able to switch alright w/o powering down?

Has anyone here ever sent their system to be fixed by Nintendo after installing the HBC? I don't mean like an error caused by installing the HBC...but general system issues etc. Just wondering if Nintendo did fix it and not remove the HBC.

Was just checking out that tutorial. I'm thinking about setting up the homebrew channel on my 4.0 Wii, but it mentions that you need "SD Card (or SDHC card only if at 4.0)".

So basically does that mean that a normal SD card will not work with 4.0? You need to use a SDHC card? Am I correct in reading that? Sorry if this sounds dumb.
It means that an SDHC card will only work on 4.0 but 4.0 can use either SD or SDHC. It should probably be worded better.

where's this supposed to be?, i upgrated the hbc and isntalled the bootmi as the 2nd os but i dont see it in the hbc....

Press home and it's one of the reboot options.

In the homebrew channel?i only have the reload option along side with the exit, about and back.but i do have a bootmii folder in my sd card

edit: my hbc is the 1.0.3 and ios61 v10.26.

The homebrew channel only shows that option when bootmii is NOT installed as boot2.

...I kind of wish I hadn't installed bootmii. I mean, it's cool and all, but there is no uninstall AFAIK, and Nintendo Europe has been known to increasingly check for homebrew stuff. Plus the backup doesn't work (corrupts my apparently incompatible SD card), so it's sort of useless for me. Oh well. I'll live. I just have to pray my Wii won't die anytime soon.

I went on and installed Bootmii (into boot2) when I upgraded the HBC. Don't really have a need for it, but whatever.

Question, how do you stop it from launching everytime you turn on the wii? With preloader there was an option, but I don't see one for Bootmii (unless I'm being stupid).

back up your nand w/ bootmii, and i think you can either rename the folder or just edit the config file to load to the sys. menu.

edit: what Mejilan said.

Set Bootmii to autoload the System Menu after a short 1 or so second delay, and you guys are set. Just edit a line or two in the config file.
