GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Yep, right now Bootmii is a feature-incomplete beta, but it provides great protection what with the pre-boot NAND backup/restore (if installed as boot2). There's no reason to actually utilize the Bootmii menu on a consistent basis, so you can easily streamline your way out of it for now.

i installed bootmii as boot2 - but when i start my wii the lights are flashin like crazyand it just boots the normal wii system menu .... anything wrog ?

Your SD card is probably incompatible. Try copying the bootmii directory on the SD card to a different card.

It means that an SDHC card will only work on 4.0 but 4.0 can use either SD or SDHC. It should probably be worded better.
Thanks for handling that. The wording is clearer now ;)

Just reboot your Wii with the SD card that it created the bootmii directory on (or copy that directory to another card as per above) to see BootMii then. Some SD cards are unfortunately incompatible right now.

...I kind of wish I hadn't installed bootmii. I mean, it's cool and all, but there is no uninstall AFAIK, and Nintendo Europe has been known to increasingly check for homebrew stuff. Plus the backup doesn't work (corrupts my apparently incompatible SD card), so it's sort of useless for me. Oh well. I'll live. I just have to pray my Wii won't die anytime soon.
There is an uninstall option in the Installer for the beta2 version of BootMii. You could try that. And you did install beta2, right?

Installed cIOS rev 13c and my HD couldn't get mounted, reverted to v10 and all is fine again. Any ideas why?

Using Configurable USB loader latest version

Did you move your hard drive to the outer port?

Also... rev 13c is out?!

Sorry about that it was ver 13b :(

Does it matter what port USB drive is connected to? (Have no idea which one I used will check later) Which one is outer if Wii is on its side and when I look at it from the front (Wii bottom is to the right)

It does matter as the fix works by making only one USB port 2.0 compatible. By 'outer' I mean the one closest to the edge of the Wii, which never changes no matter how you orient your console :p.

Just got a brand new Wii.

Got prompted to update to I presume the newest firmware.

Should I install HBC first on whatever firmware I'm on now or should I update first then install HBC?

From what I'm reading I might as well just install HBC first. I can't find anything that says I shouldn't.

Gregor, just update first. No harm done either way.

Ooooh, I didn't notice that. Gotta try it tomorrow.

I used the beta2 installer (came with the newest HBC).

I think this will be an LU64+ Wii, so you will be much better off to install any homebrew stuff you want now and then update. Use this:

Cool, that site is great. Awesome work.

I'm not sure what you mean by LU64+ Wii (that's probably a version number/code?), or why that would mean I'd be better off loading HBC first before I update firmware, but I'll take your word for it.

I have all the files I need, so I'll go ahead and start installing.

alright, so im on v3.0U, used the twilight hack

I have no issues at all using my wii for anything on my SDTV, but when I hook it up to my Samsung 1080p DLP and go to launch a back up and it turns my tv off, and the system itself has to be unplugged in order to turn it off (power button doesn't work), I am using the composite cables that came with my Wii, it is a launch system.

any ideas at all?

pretty sure my HDTV turning itself off is not a good thing for it, so until I get this resolved im leaving it hooked up to my SDTV

Decided to hit up a SMG Luigi replay, like mentioned in that new thread dedicated to it.
Over the weeks I had heard that SMG could be problematic.
I've specifically seen posts that mention the occasional freeze (possibly spin-down) even with those that are using my HDD (Seagate FreeAgent Go) set to never spin-down.

I've had the game powered on uninterrupted for the last 3 hours with absolutely no issue. (10 stars with Luigi already!) I even left the game paused for about 45 minutes as I went down the corner to pick up my laundry, fold it up, put all away, and do various other minor chores around the house. That gave the drive more than enough time to supposedly spin-down (despite the setting being disabled) and/or for the game to fuck up.

And it didn't. So I think those random reports out there might just be full of shit. That, or they hit other select incompatibility issues, which is always possible when you're hacking work-arounds like these.

I guess what I'm saying is to not let those reports out there bug you. I'm having a killer time (re-)playing this, shooting for turn my 120 Mario file to a 242 Mario/Luigi file. :)

OK, so I think I'm done with adding stuff to the GWHT for the time being. All the stuff I originally planned to have up there is now listed.

Again, if anyone wants to help maintain the site, please apply using the link on the Welcome page. Additionally, if there is something I have missed that you'd like explained a little more or there is some confusion, please use the discuss links at the bottom of the page to let us know so it can be fixed.

Also it would be great if we could have the logo from my posts above added to the OP if possible.

Clipper, I feel absolutely horrible that I haven't contributed to the wiki at all yet. I still plan to, if you'll continue to bear with me a bit. If nothing else, I intend to read over it all and propose possible improvements/rewordings. This weekend has turned into something I haven't really done in the longest time. An almost purely gaming weekend.

For what it's worth, you have inspired me to pursue a similar wiki for PSP homebrew/custom firmware needs, instead of the dinky thread I'm currently maintaining (and had been puttering away with redesign concepts for months now).

Great job, mate.

Here's the issue I'm running into. I'm at 4U first of all.

My machine is an LU63, and I'm trying this:

http://gwht.wikidot.com/ios249

1. Unrar the file and drag everything to your sd card, say yes if it asks to merge.
2. Put SD card in Wii, boot Wii, run Homebrew Channel, run CMDVDX34
3. Run all parts of the application one at a time in the order specified.
* Some people report lockups during one or all of these steps. If your Wii locks up, power it down manually and run through this step again. If a given step does not work the second time, move on to the next portion. Don't worry; this is normal and will not damage your wii.
4. Go back to Homebrew Channel and run Wad Manager IOS35 version (WMIOS35)
5. Install ios35.wad
6. Run it again
7. Install cios7.wad
8. Now expand the steps for the "I am on firmware version 3.4 or less OR I have already completed the steps for my Wii listed above" section.

At step three, on the third and final step, my system locks up with a blank screen every time. So as advised, I skip past that and go to step 4, but it doesn't allow me to select which wad I want to run. It shows the two, and I can scroll between them, but I can't select one.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong?

EDIT WM 1.4 seems to allow me to run them...I'll post back.

No problem. You did say you were busy this week, and I did want to try to get most of it up myself to demonstrate a consistent style and level of info. And have fun setting up the PSP Wiki.

I'm actually surprised how easy this whole experience has been. I'd never even edited a Wiki page before and now I have a whole site completed in less than a week and only a few hours actual work all up (much of that time spent redoing installations to get the really simple step-by-step tasks). The Wikidot tools aren't that much different than forum posts and makes everything pretty easy to do.

So for some reason no matter what I try I have to use WM 1.4 to install things. But that seems OK, I got CIOS 9 installed and just now need to update it to 13 or whatever the most recent version is.

Are you sure you had to upgrade to 9 first? I plan to add this info to the tutorial. What was your exact procedure?

a input signal should not be able to turn off your monitor unless it has it is a feature

maybe when you launch a game, it's going to 480i and the tv doesnt have interlace available and it turns off the tv

Clipper said:

Nope.

First thing I did was the bannerbomb/homebrew channel install. Next step was the DVDX 3 step install. First two stages worked fine but this would lock up on step three every time. Never did get that installed.

That's when I started running into issues with 2011 errors. Every cios installer would error out with 2011 when it came to installing the WAD, and the 1.3 versions of the custom installers wouldn't let me move past the wad selection stage.

So, what I ended up doing was putting WM 1.4 on a card with the wad file for cios 7. Installed that, then tried installing 9 the same way and it worked.

That's where I'm at now. I'll see if I can find the wad for cios 13 and install that tonight.

So anything WM 1.3 based seems to not work at all on my system. 2011 errors every time. I don't know what version the cios 13/b installer is based off of but I wouldn't be surprised if it's 1.3.

In the end installing 9 may have been totally unnecessary. I installed it merely because I had it available, whereas I couldn't locate the wad for 13/b easily. I would probably recommend just installing 7 with WM 1.4, then moving up to one of the higher versions using 1.4 and the actual wad file for 13/b.

EDIT: also, I wanted to point out that this information:

IOS = Input/Output System and is basically the mini-firmware/OS that is called by just about any app or game that you run on the Wii. IOSes are Nintendo-made, and many games come with new ones on-disc (typically because the game in question REQUIRES it to run). They are assigned numbers such as IOS36, IOS60, etc.

cIOS = custom IOS, the most popular of which is Waninkoko's cIOS36 rev10, which installs itself as a "fake" IOS249, a designation that Nintendo has not yet put into use. This particular cIOS comes with all kinds of goodies built in, such as homebrew USB2.0 drivers, homebrew SD card drivers, etc. Any modern version of USB Loader requires cIOS36 rev10, since they can load Wii disc game rips from either an SD card or an external USB drive.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=15952727

...was extremely helpful. That's info that should be in the GAF wiki if it isn't already, IMO.

I was going to add a page but it looks like I need to be accepted as a member.

hmm, that might be his problem. When my wii was hooked up to my projector, the wii would boot up 480p, but when I launched a game that was 480i the projector would lose signal for about 10 seconds.

try different games and see if thats the problem.

hey guys I have a quick question, I currently have system menu 3.2 on my wii. Should I upgrade it, and if so, how do i go about upgrading it? Also, can someone explain too me what a IOS is? How do i update the IOS? Is their a way too remove an IOS, or is it better too just keep them on their?

Do you already have homebrew running on your Wii? If so click on this link

The answer was on the last page but here it is again:

Whenever you update your Wii through Nintendo's firmware IOS are updated. I'm pretty sure removal of an IOS that the system needs to run will cause a brick. I advise not to mess around with IOS unless you know what you're doing.

Sorry for my ignorance, but i updated the hbc and installed as boot2 so if i understand correctly this runs automatically if its set as boot2?

It runs automatically, but is only a stub of code that executes sd:/bootmii/armboot.elf on startup. If it can't find that file, it just goes to the system menu instead.

Great tutorial site!
I used it to get back into gaming with my Wii.
I had Punch-Out!! wrapped for weeks because I didn't want to update. (though now i see it would have been ok)

Question about backing up the Wii itself with BootMii.
Should I use a clean, different SD card? Or is the one I've been using for saves, homebrew ok?

Any card with 512MB free space is okay as long as it is BootMii beta2. It would be a little safer to put it on a card you generally don't use, but as long as you're careful not to do anything that would corrupt the card, you'll be good.

LU64+ Wiis are troublesome right now, but apparently rev13 and rev13b of cIOS249 fix that, so it should be OK.

Edit: On that point, this is a big problem for our tutorial right now. Is there anybody here who has a virgin Wii with a serial number of LU64 or above that is willing to do some tests for us? Finding information on these Wii types is troublesome. The serial number is located on a sticker at the base (when in the stand) of the Wii near the bevelled corner.

I'm getting back a LU90 Wii from repairs this week...

What is that even supposed to be? I can't find any useful information on that project site.
It's mother-effing Freespace 2, for the Wii. You download the executeable, add the files from your installation, put the whole shebang on an SD card or external drive, and bam. Freespace 2 on the Wii. Sounds awesome. I don't have enough storage space at the moment, but I will try it sooner rather than later.

And i you don't know what Freespace 2 is.. uh... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khIWdolT9xY

Edit: This one is pretty nice too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r08pQHjF1X0

I have the gaf tutorial open, but I just want to double check so I don't fuck up. Should I install the usb loader first and then upgrade to system 4.0, or vice versa. I'm on 3.2 with HBC already via the old Twilight Hack.

I don't think it matters as long as you have cIOS Rev 13/13b and BootMii installed before you update.

what does it do in the boot2 mode? it automatically makes the bakcup?

No, you have to do the NAND backup yourself. It takes a while to back up all 512 MBs.
The benefit to installing Bootmii as boot2 is that it loads BEFORE the System Menu.

So if you do something to somehow brick your Wii, you'll still be able to get into Bootmii and restore your NAND (if you backed it up previously).

If you only have Bootmii installed as an IOS, then you're much more vulnerable to bricks, and realistically will not be able to recover from many of them.

To the USB Loader HDD users here: Is there a general recommendation for a hdd model? My friend has Trekstore 250GB and sometimes the music stops or the hdd takes 2 seconds to respond. Is that a general problem?

Oh man, I've been dying to do this. I know it' easy to do, I'm just so afraid of bricking my Wii. I don't want $250 going down the shitter.

That's spindown. Tell him to install a new cIOS and it will fix it.

He had cIOS36. What's the latest? I googled I think it's cIOS38 rev13b. Can you confirm it?
If that spindown could be fixed with a cIOS then I'll put my library on a hdd, too. My Wii DVD drive sounds strange lately. :-/

dk_ said:

cIOS38 13 and 13b (13 works better but only some loaders support it). Both have bugs that make it difficult to restart games without resetting the console, though.

Alternatively, Hermes' IOS223 also has a good chance of fixing it. It doesn't have the restart bugs and fixes spindown issues on most, but not all, drives. Configurable USB Loader supports it.

Can somebody recommend a good USB HDD to buy? Is there a general brand/model or two that offer better results with the WII?
