GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Hi again Clipper. I think we are in different timezones :D

I tried reinstalling bootmii but still no luck.

In WAD Manager 1.4 you have to specify which IOS you will update. When I try to mess with IOS35 it crashes my Wii. Can I use any other number instead? I need to do some reading re: what IOS files actually are and do :lol

But - it's all a learning experience and I'm having fun trying to find out what's going wrong.

Oh shit... I just realised something - I am using an SD card! Could that be my problem? Although I was having issues before my gf upgraded the Wii to 4.0 firmware.. I remember reading that you can only use an SDHC memory card when messing around with a 4.0 firmware Wii.

Please let that be the problem! SDHC cards are dirt cheap here.

After I get this all working - I need to downgrade the firmware again anyway so that I can run anyregion changer and change my jap wii menu to English. I think anyregion changer doesnt work on 4.0 firmware.

Its 2.35am here and I have an 8am class. Might leave it for tomorrow when my head isn't so muddled. I'm really hoping it's a memory card issue. Fingers crossed :D

Holy shit I just started messing around with Brawl Texture hacks and it's fucking awesome.

I finally can have my
Mr. L Luigi Costume from Super Paper Mario

I'd like to thank the people in this topic, now I can play my No More Heroes again :)

Haven't find much use for the other stuff though. USB loader doesn't seem to be much faster (just no more DVD thinking sounds on my Wii), but it wasn't worth the amount of time I spend on getting it working.

Is MPlayer any good? Is it comparable to the famous Xbox Media Center? (I never had an Xbox but heard good things about that)

Is there anything else that's worth my time when it comes to homebrew (and that isn't illegal)?

I wanted to drop a thank you in here as well. While I didn't use this guide orignally over the weekend (had a LU64 to deal with) I was having issues getting a good USB loader to work. Then I stumbled upon the GAF skinned one.

Simple and easy from there. So thanks to everyone involved in this.

Shit. So I updated to cIOS 38 rev13 using the GAF wiki guide. Now none of my games load. I get a blue screen and Error #002. Damn, wish I had just left well enough alone.

I believe you can install old version over it.

What USB loader are you using? Ultimate will fail in the way you mention with rev 13. Configurable and other good loaders work if you install the latest updates.

If you don't mind, can you let me know if my LU64 guide in the GWHT looks like what you did? I'm not 100% on the steps in there.

I really don't know what the issue is here. Again, this really makes me think you have an LU64-type Wii, and they will brick if you downgrade any of the other IOSes, apparently.

Sorry, SD is actually better than SDHC. Some homebrew apps don't support SDHC, but they should all support SD.

It doesn't work, and trying to make it work will brick your Wii if it is LU64. I suggest putting up with the Japanese menu text for now and changing over once the hacks evolve a bit to become safer.

Yeah, I rolled it back. I was using something called pwned USB loader and also tried USBLoader GX. I'll download Configurable.

OK, so the install procedures seem off?
1. Unzip the Configurable USB Loader file and copy the contents of SDUSB-Loader_cfg31c/inSDRoot1 to sd:/
2. If you want our suggested default setup, unzip GAFcfg.zip and copy the contents to sd:/, overwriting any files which already exist.
3. If you want to use a Hermes IOS instead of IOS249, add the line ios=222-mload or ios=223-mload to sd:/apps/USBLoader/config.txt.
* The later version of IOS249 implement most of the fixes of IOS222/223. There are some feature and compatibility differences that may make you wish to use these instead. IOS249 is recommended.
4. Start the Homebrew Channel and run Configurable USB Loader.

Don't I need to add something to the app folder to make it runnable through the HBC?

Yes, but there is an apps folder in the InSDRoot directory. Note I say to take the contents of the InSDRoot directory, not the directory itself.

Thanks Clipper, et. al on the guide. It was easily the best resource I found last night. Now I'm all set up! So awesome to be able to access my games this easily.

So, I can confirm the Motion Plus (Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger) games have new updates in them.

But I didn't buy Punch Out!! yet so maybe it's the same.
It just seems it's needed to play the Motion Plus video tutorial though, since I could play the game fine without updating using USB Loader but the game rebooted my Wii is I tried to play the video.

So I updated through the disc, now the video plays and everything seems to be still fine (HBC and everything on it).

Just givin' a shout about it, it's probably nothing importan but you never know :)

You are saying the video plays fine through USB Loader or just on the disc?

The update is probably just an IOS install, but I was under the impression the video doesn't work because of IOS reload issues (the same reason why Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings works except for the Fate of Atlantis bonus game).

Is there some secret to getting USB Loader to reecognize my hard drive? It's like a 25% crap shoot when I boot up the loader.

Try different cios rev versions. Start with rev 13b and keep going lower.

I've got an odd question...

I heard that Wii systems sold at some point last year came with a "How to Connect to the Internet" video preinstalled on the Wii.

Is this true? Has anyone seen such a video on their system?

Ok this is good advice. I'm going to call it quits for now.. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone works out how to do all this on a LU64 system.

But it's all good. I can use the homebrew channel, browser and media player so I'm still happy :D

Thanks for putting up with all of my q's. I'll stay up to date and let you know how I go in the future, in case you want to include my experiences in the guide for other folks in my position. Cheers!

Can somebody help me figure out how to install Brawl+? I've successfully installed HBC, BootMii and Gecko OS 1.9, as well as other apps, but cannot figure out how to mount and load any Brawl+ codes. I've downloaded .gct files and everything. But every time I boot Brawl from Gecko OS, none of the codes are loaded.

Help me! Somebody help me!

Did you enable Ocarina in the Gecko options? And put the files in the correct directory on the SD card (sd:/cheats I think).

If so, I'm not sure how to help. I've never used Ocarina myself.

How do I turn on Ocarina in Gecko? Isn't it built-in or something?

Check the menus. It's almost certainly an option, and is probably off by default.

Edit: Looks like the option is called "SD Cheats" according to a video I just saw.

I enabled "SD cheats". Right before it booted up the game, it says that there are too many lines of code. Hmmmm. I may need to get another code package.

EDIT

I got it to work. Holy shit, Brawl is soooooooo much better now. Falco is even more beast now. :lol

Those are the same steps, down to doing the uninstall twice on the LU64 and IOS. I did those during my install, so I can't answer your question there.

Well I didn't want to do that so I played around with the USB drive and as long as I plug it in after I start up the loader, it works every time. FYI for anyone else experiencing it.

Probably a dumb question, but since I have this working can I now play imported games? I'll import Little King Story in a heartbeat if that is the case.

Yes, it does.

Anyone know if the drive from a PS3 (60 GB) would work in a USB enclosure?

I could upgrade my PS3 HD and use the old one on the Wii.
Yep, just make sure you don't get an enclosure that only supports FAT.

An excellent choice! I also recommend you find AwesomePuff, SA-X Samus and the Black Mage Climbers.

I can't help solve the problem except to say: Why bother with the backup disc?

Backup discs do seem to have a negative affect on the Wii laser, so you are hurting your Wii, and if you are doing it to protect the original disc or let kids play or something, you'd be better off using USB Loader, which many more of us can help you with.

a friend of mine was wondering if there is a media player for wii homebrew that's compatible with upnp. what should i tell him? i think i remember hearing about something like that, but i could be mistaken.

I'm thinking of purchasing an external hard drive for the usb loader channel but can any external hard drive work with the usb loader channel and are there any recommended hard drives for it if any

Hey guys, I'm sort of new to this homebrew thing so I have a very noobish question. How do I get SNES roms on my friend's wii? When I did the twilight hack for him I had a whole bunch of files that came in the rar and one was SNES9x, so do I just install that through wad manager and insert the roms in an SD card?

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/index.php/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List There is a good place to start, though it seems to be running slow and may be down right now. Any of the Seagate portable drives seem to work the best, like the FreeAgent Go, but there are any number of other drives that work fine.

Be careful about these things, especially on GAF. You tread a thin line asking specifically about roms on here. But the process should be easily found with a quick google search, or maybe even some documentation with the files you already have.

I'm not asking about the roms, just the process of getting them to my wii. Thanks for the heads up though.

gbatemp.net forums may be a "safer" place to talk about things that tread the GAF line also. They do have quite a bit more discussion on lots of other Wii homebrew stuff it seems, as well.

Just install SNES9x using the Homebrew Browser which you can put in your apps folder in your SD Card. Then create a "roms" folder in either the root of the SD card or in your SNES9x folder (forgot which so look it up quickly on a wiki like wiibrew). That's all.

Question all:

Is there a way to COMPLETELY uninstall and get rid of Bootmii from my Wii? I really, really don't feel the need for it, and I just don't really care for its features just yet. I'm assuming just taking it off the SD card doesn't fully do this, correct?

Taking out the SD card or moving/renaming the bootmii folder on the SD Card will stop it from doing anything much at startup, but BootMii will still be on your Wii. The only difference you will see between your normal Wii and your Wii with BootMii is a disc slot flash when powering on.

If you still don't want even that, there is an uninstall option in the beta 2 installer, so you could try that.

Just rename the Bootmii folder. What problem is there if it's still residing on the console? As long as it bypasses the screen. It's still good to have for a safety net if your Wii gets screwed

Wait, what's the uninstall option? Just through the Hackmii installer? I tried that and it didn't really uninstall it, because once I hit that option the uninstall feature was still popping up for it.

it's a boot2 btw
