GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I tried using Smash Stack. I never played Smash and I didn't create a new file. I downloaded Smash Stack to an SD card along with HackMii. When I got to the stage builder, the Homebrew channel didn't load. Instead the game froze and there was a noise. I have system menu 4.3 btw. Can anyone help me?

Did you delete all of the stages first?

Awesome. I already installed it but it's good to know I did it right since your instructions are the same (except I put base 56 on 247 and 57 on 248, not vice versa). Thanks.

The wiki doesn't really elaborate much on it, but is there any reason to upgrade to d2x from 249? I haven't touched the Wii hacking side in over a year it seems and I'm a 'don't fix it if it ain't broken' kind of guy.

Edit: Nm, read a few posts up. Well, I guess I won't upgrade since my games are working fine right now. Unless someone can tell me it fixes Metroid Prime Trilogy without having to mess with the loaders to load the 3 games.

Edit2: Okay, I guess I should read ENTIRE posts. I need to upgrade stat. I hope I remember how to follow instructions, I always get nervous tinkering with the Wii

Even when you don't create a file? I never played Smash and rented the game.

From the Wiki:
"Start Brawl and move any existing custom stages on Brawl to your SD card and exit the stage builder. Smash Stack will not work if the console has any custom stages on it, even the three samples that come with a new file."

Ooooh, nice to hear about that D2X/Metroid Prime Trilogy thing. That's the only game I still play from the disc, and I don't like to since it's a DVD9.

Clipper said:
Nintendo installs those stubs. You should leave them there. That's why I moved to 247, 248 and 224 in the tutorial as those are not stubbed by Nintendo's discs and hence you can play from the discs without killing your IOS setup.

What directory do you have the files in on the SD card? Please report a full path of one of the files, like:
sd:/apps/StartPatch/boot.dol

I had
sd:/private/wii/apps/StartPatch/boot.dol

I will try again

which is best StartPatch or Gecko for region free?
I read StartPatch plays all games while Gecko has some it cannot play

StartPatch is a lot easier to use as you enable it once and it stays on your system until the next system update. I got sick of starting Gecko each time.

All-in-all I prefer using USB Loading for my region free, though. It's so much more convenient. It also allows you to do stuff like the VIDTV patch so that Japanese fonts display correctly.

I cannot use StartPatch because it requires I install IOS36 which seems to need some .wad thing when ran the installer it said that file was not found but my wii is online :( "use NUS Downloader to get IOS36 v3551 as IOS36-64-3351.wad and copy it to the root
directory"

okay I do not understand the USB Loading but I take that some of the software required to dump a disk will be Windows only?? I just have a macbook here it has windows 7 but runs too slow. I would also need to buy a USB Drive Fat 32 (I guess Amazon has some cheap ones)
too much trouble...

back to StartPatch... I'll try to use the Windows 7 on parallels to track down this .wad business

this is how long it took me to install StartPatch

It just took reading more carefully and also my Health Warning being gone is cool

now to get some UK Wii titles :D YAY!!!

Well, poo. It's not working for me... I try to load corruption, and I just get a black screen and the HD access stops.
Do the other Metroid Primes work? Did you update Cfg too? Did you rip the game recently or a long time ago?

Huh. The first two work. Cfg is updated to v69d. I reset/deleted Cfg's options for MPT. The rip was shortly after I got the game, so a while I guess.

Edit: re-ripping seems to have fixed it. Thanks, Clipper!

Yeah, you must have ripped it back with one of the old versions of IOS249 that had the dual layer bug, causing discs with dual layers to be ripped incorrectly. I haven't seen that one in a long time, but it did come to mind, which is why I asked the questions ;).

I don't have any custom stages. I don't even Smash which you need to get custom stages.

However, I noticed that the recognize any files in my SD card. I believe I have had this problem when I hacked my Wii with the Twighlight Hack. Is there any way I could get the Wii to recognize Smash?

If you created a new save file, there should be 3 sample stages in the Stage Builder sub-menu (which can be found by going to the Vault menu in the main screen).

I have an old Maxtor 500 GB which was bought 3-4 years ago and a 2 TB Western Digital which was bought last year. Both HDDs work fine, so I assume any brands will work and there are no size limit.

But I didn't create a new file. When the option came up I said no.

Netto-kun said:
Then just create one? You can delete the save file later on anyway.

So you have to create a file?

Also when I check my SD card on the Wii system, it show no indication of Smash stack being on the card. Should something be there? I remember having a similar issue with Twighlight hack.

Going by how you didn't find any custom stages because you picked "No" during the "Create a new save file" prompt, that's what I assume you have to do.

You don't need to look for the file in the Wii system. The game will detect the Smash Stack exploit and load the HackMii Installer.

And regarding the installation process for the d2x IOS. Remove all Gamecube memory cards if you get a screen with a bunch of error messages.

I need some advice. My Wii is giving me a disc read error and I'd like to send it in to Nintendo but I'm worried about homebrew. Will just removing the channel and leaving out the SD card help?

Alright I've tried everything from scratch:

I formatted my SD card using FAT.

I used an SD card that is 128 MB.

I created a Smash file then copied the sample stages.

I renamed the "private" folder "privateold"

I download the Smash Stack exploit for NA.

I downloaded the hackmii installer

I copied the private folder from smash stack to the root of my SD card.

I copied the boot.elf file frim hackmii folder to the root of the SD card

I placed the SD card back in Wii

I turned on Smash and went to Stage builder

AND it still didn't work. My Wii freezes and makes a noise.

Is there anything left for me to do?

Hmm, can't think of any other solutions other than try to use a different SD card.

Edit:

Yeah, deleting the channel and removing the SD card should do.

pgtl_10, you said you copied the stages over to the SD. You are meant to MOVE the stages over instead so they aren't on your Wii.

Also, are you sure you are using the correct region of the Smash exploit?

Teppic said:

Do not use drives that include a USB hub. The USB homebrew code will not work with hubs. Most other drives do work, though.

Actually, this may not be enough. Some people have had their Wiis returned unfixed even without this. Unfortunately, there's no real way to remove all the stuff they might look for, so you might as well send it in anyway and see how you go.

The most important thing about this new cIOS is it makes pretty much all the games that didn't work... work. Metroid Prime Trilogy, Sam and Max, Smash Bros. Virtual Console stuff and other things should all work fine now.

Us the tutorials there to install the Homebrew Channel, d2x and Configurable USB Loader. It will help you rip the games to the hard drive (check the notes on the Cfg page about how to get ISOs for Dolphin). There's also another app which might rip a little faster, but I can't remember the name right now (I think it's CleanRip or SmartRip).

I've been following your guide but I when I boot up the homebrew channel, the d2x installer doesn't show up. I put in the apps folder, so I don't know the deal is. I also already installed IOS236 as well.

It's been a while since I've been in the homebrew scene, so I decided to update stuff (nice job on d2x by the way!). I'm wondering if there are any advantages to moving my backups from a fat filesystem to ntfs? I remember that you used to only be able to read ntfs partitions, not write. Will there be any read speed advantages? or is it just having the >4gig files.

Hello guys I just recently bought a wii with 4.3E firmware installed, recently I have been looking around for ways to hack it and found this tutorial: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup

Now according to this, there's no way to hack the wii without having to buy some specific game (Smash Bros Brawl), is there any other way to do this without getting the game as I'm low on funds at the moment.

You need at least one of the compatible games (Brawl is the most popular). Either borrow one from a friend/relative or rent it for a night.

Thanks, I'm guessing that once I've used the game to hack the console it is no longer needed to access homebrew?

Almost posted with a problem about the new d2x not working, then I found out, you need to also go into the options for the particular game and turn on the option for ios reload blocking.

However, I do still have a concern. While playing DKCR, my screen suddenly went black and I was taken back to the home menu. I simply switched back to the hermes ios that I had been using for that game. Any thoughts? Any data I could collect from my console that might help?

So you have a file called sd:/apps/d2x cIOS Installer v2.1/boot.dol?

NTFS is now fast enough that you could enable the drive space calculation and it wouldn't cause too much of a delay. Apart from that, there's no real speed differences, so file size of other stuff you want on the drive is the only real determining factor.

Seems like you have your game setup set, but I also strongly suggest you use our own guide (although wiibrew is a very good choice too). Just check the Mario image above or click my tag.

Has it happened more than once? You can get things like this just randomly, but they shouldn't happen too often. Especially with d2x.

To clarify, I did move my stages. None were on the Wii. I also erased the Smash file on the Wii once I moved my stages to an SD card.

Yep but I can't get Smash Stack to work for me. If you use Smash please send me tips on how you did it.

Wait, so you erased your Smash save after you moved the files and before you tried to load Smash Stack? Don't do that.

Thank God!! Thank you God!!

Thanks everyone that final tip about keeping Smash file on system worked. The instructions should be clear about that.

They never said to delete the save file. However, I will change them to mention it anyway...

Okay after installing the browser what apps would you consider is must have? Also I saw the GAF Wiibrew guide mention IOS as a recommendation. What are those?
