Galleon (Xbox)

demi, you're a fucking winner! :) Galleon is an excellent game, with charming characters, a nice story, gigantic islands and one of the most innovative control schemas of the last couple of years. Ok, the combat isn't that good and the graphics are a bit of outdated, but this game is fucking great!

I love you!

We are on GAF and I'm afraid to say this loud so...
Galleon was my fucking GOTY 2004. Fuck you Half Life 2, halo 2, MGS3, and all the rest

Enclave is a good game, so is Shenmue and Galleon should be a good in-between game :) I support any of Demi's decisions 100000% with love, support and a big thumbs up :D

See, now you like all the games I like. If you like it, then I should definitely like it.

Now I want to play this now, but I am so close to finishing Covenant!

Graphics are garbage to me, I like Shadow Hearts (1), it didn't matter.

Go finish that awesome game Covenant is! And then play that awesome piece of software Galleon is.

Absolutely. We seem to have similar tastes when it comes to videogames. That's why I don't understand all your Psychonauts hate. :( It's a fucking awesome game too.

P.S.: what's your opinion on Eternal Darkness?

Oh... to all the PAL gamers out there. If you haven't played this yet, get it at game.net (click me all over) for just 10 UKP (15€). It's a great game! Something like the first tomb raider with pirates.
There are also boobs in there!

There's only room for one big dog, and it's an exclusive.

P.S.: what's your opinion on Eternal Darkness?

Um...

It's ok?

Nothing too WOW about it, but I played through it once.

Not going to bother playing through it three times just to see the super special ending that still doesn't make a lick of sense.

But I won't hate on it.

I'm really sure the guy who lead Tomb Raider is responsible for Galleon.

Yes! Toby Gard, the father of Tomb Raider, founded Confounding Factor after leaving Core Design and created this awesome game. Too bad they went through troubled times and had to finish up the game with just a couple of people left and shut their doors as soon as the US release was through.

Gard after that returned to its root at Eidos and is working on the new Tomb Raider as a lead designer. This makes the next tomb raider a sure buy for me.

Now everyone show your love for Tork: Prehistoric Punk and Malice.

Just to give you an impression of how big the environments in this game are... here's a small video (1mb) of a jump from the top of the second island to where you start the level. Enjoy! http://www.xeye.it/public/upload_dir/galleon/galleon_level2_bigjump.wmv.wmv

Very big Tomb Raider vibe.

I like Tomb Raider II especially. The rest, not so much.

I did something very similar to that on a level, maybe Great Wall? Operahouse? You do a dive from a high spot and just go all the way to the bottom.

And break her neck.

Listen to the ones who actually played it, a lot of people here judged this game from it's cover (literally!) but i doubt they have ever seen it in motion.
Despite being a bit "old style" as far as gameplay goes, it wasn't a bad at all.
Unsurprisingly very reminescent of Tomb Raider in the combat/platforming/puzzle solving balance, with, iirc, a few arpg elements thrown in too (talking with npc's etc).
More 'dynamic' than TR, good level design which involves a lot of climbing on top of huge structures, expansive environments, excellent atmosphere (as soon as you complete the first chapter you'll be asked to follow a couple npc's to the top of a mountain following a narrow path which unwinds around the mountain side...halfway to the top a beautiful soothing music starts playing and wind starts blowing, it's a very nice touch and there are many like this throughout the game).
It's main problem in the eyes of many was the outdated 3d engine and questionable character design (well at least it was original and not manga wannabe) but all in all it's a good game which was released a tad too late, but still retains its charm despite the simplistic graphics, sometimes clumsy combat system and a somewhat 90's feeling.

Hey demi. I can tell you this much. My brother is very much into RPGs and he has played many. Shadow Hearts, Final Fantasy, Fable, Kotor, he loved them for example. But this Galleon he found it very very boring and just couldn't play it that much for the sake of it, whereas he finishes most RPGs he plays. So it really has to be a bad product in his book if he doesn't finish (he finishes most average RPGs he plays, but Galleon is just too bad/boring a game for him to finish). That might be related to how the game controls and how the fights are done actually. He usually doesn't like RPGs with too complex gameplay, and Galleon is sort of in that category. Besides, the story didn't catch him either and he's pretty much into this whole pirate themes. Do whatever you wish, but....

Pal you better recognize Malice...because actually....it isn't half bad. A simple platformer yes,but nothing to bitch about. Best 10 dollars I've spent. If youre even remotely close to liking platformers then its a fun little 5 hour ride.:) It had a dark, quirky feel to it,much like Evil Twin did on DreamCast.

Youre killing me,because TR2 is pretty much the best to me as well. I tried to like the original but it never clicked for me. TR2 though was pretty awesome. The underwater ship levels, that one stage that took place in France where where you drove the motorboat and had to jump that ramp after solving that enormous puzzle to get everything set for that jump, the freakin' opera house, damn such a great game. I notice we both share similiar tastes in games. One of these days you'll have to drop a list on underated games that you've played,I'd enjoy reading it.

So wait,

He loves RPGs, yet hates Galleon.

Galleon...isn't an RPG.

Am I missing something here?

Isn't this like comparing apples to oranges or something of that sort?

I could try, but I'm not too keen on the whole "underrated / overrated" schtick that gets thrown around. If I likes it, I likes it. That's about it.

No, I can't get it to make sense either.

Galleon rocks. You can't go wrong with a $10 price tag or whatever. It sure looks outdated but the gameplay is very fresh. I love the fact that you can climb around on everything. I climed around the ceiling of the first shop just to mess around with it. It felt kind of amazing how I could actually climb up on the bookshelf and up on the log-things (like a swede knows what that's called in english!) in the ceiling...very un-game-like freedom going on.

Ok skip the underated discussion then because yeah it only brings out trolls anyway. Just continue to post game impressions. I'll try to do the same,DarkWatch would be a start,I'm probably going to pick it up later this week.

That's problably why my brother didn't like it then. It's strange. I remember playing a bit of the game and in my mind it looked like an RPG, but since you have a lot more freedom of movement (sort of platforming) and no character buildup (i'm not sure of this, since i didn't play that much of it, but i'm getting this from some guys here) i think it would be sort of an action/adventure game.
Forget what i said before. I still have the game around here somewhere, and i could get a bit into it to give MY opinion on the subject. :)

For all the haters (and those comparing Galleon to a RPG :rolleyes). Show me another title where you can do something like this:

galleon_jump_01.jpg

See the pole there? You can jump there without any problems at all from Rhama's current position. You just have to center the camera on the pole, press the jump button (A) and tell Rhama to move foward.

Then Rhama will do the following
galleon_jump_02.jpg

galleon_jump_03.jpg

and land safely on the pole

galleon_jump_04.jpg

Of course you can do the same from the other side, too. Just rotate the camera to center the pole, press jump button + up and Rhama will land safely on the Pole.

I love this game :)

So it's like Tomb Raider. Walk up to the edge, hold Up + Jump, and she leaps forward, ready to grab onto the nearest ledge.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the game. I just like discussing this with others and calling them poofters.

I mean, I could be better off buying other cheap titles like Katamari Damacy...wait...

Not really. Rhama will climb anything he can climb if you just keep walking towards it. Some people call this "too simplistic", but I just feel it eliminates an unnecessary (as proved by this game) button push.

This was kind of interesting in that you pointed the camera where you wanted Stretchy Dudeface to go, and he would do whatever he had to get there.

i really liked the whole thing, the art, the voices, the gameplay, the gigantic levels on which you can jump and swing into the stratosphere and then land on a mile high pole and jump to the nearest cliffside and scramble up to save the princess. oh yes definately, was a really fun game, a little bit short though.

I thought it had the perfect lenght. It took me 16 hours and 20 minutes to complete. And that last level was one of the most exciting levels ever. Absolutely fantastic!

When one's through he can go back to every island to search for the goodies he missed. There's lot to be found! My stats after the first playthrough:

Treasures: 11/20
Red Mushrooms: 48/73
Blue Mushrooms: 58/62
Strength Potions: 6/15
Haste Potions: 5/15
Pistols: 41/80
Secret Swords: 1/5
Enemies Defeated: 462
Highest Combat: 77
Time Taken: 16:19:56
Hints: 15

Gard is especially good at giving the players a sense of altitude; very few other games besides TR and Galleon are successfull at this, as well as in giving the players a strong feeling of 'being there'.
Knowing Toby is involved in the next tomb raider gives me hope; this guy can do great things with a decent team to back him up.

My experience with this title see-sawed between: "Fuck yes, awesome! <5 mins later> Fuck no, NO! NO!!" Some brilliant design gems in there, others left unpolished. You can taste its potential. Such games depress me. There ought to be an NGO for games with potential but no money.

Demi Factor

I was pretty interested in this game before release but that quickly waned with the deluge of other titles. Glad to see interest in this title ramp up and thanks for the reminder that its only $9.99 at Toys R Us. I guess I'll have to check this game out.

I played Galleon to the very end. There are some good things about the gameplay but the camera is a terror and the controls need some work as well. I ended up hating the game near the end... thing started to get frustrating.

In all seriousness now, how do the platforming and the acrobatics in this game compare to say, the two recent Prince of Persia titles?

The platforming is far more ambitious than any of the new PoP titles, but because it tries for much more expansive and complicated areas to navigate, it stumbles quite a bit more...it just doesn't have the controlled and clean platforming found in Ubisoft's levels. It's not totally sloppy or anything...the camera just tends to stick and wrap in awkward angles at times.

I see. Those sequence of shots involving the pole hopping got me thinking of PoP. Granted, poles were for grabbing to shimmy, in PoP, but still.

Ah yes, the "tutorial" part of the game :) I actually LOL when the game showed rock climbing... So fast :lol

I haven't beat it yet, but I think it's definitely a great underdog game

[edit] Also that running jump part amazed the crap out of me. White Michael Jordan. Seriously
