Game Boy Next Should Be Smaller Than DS/PSP

Anyone else agree?

I like both my PSP and DS a lot, but it feels like you're carrying brick in your pocket when you're lugging them around.

While I'm not expecting Game Boy Next to be GBA SP size (screen must be bigger), I'd like to see a fold out design for the GB Next, maybe a little wider/thicker than the Apple i-Pod, but no more than that.

Even if it means dumping GBA cartridge backwards compatibility. If Nintendo sticks to DS sized card format, thats way smaller than the PSP UMD's and can cut down on thickness.

The system should be just big enough for a 4 inch LCD (16x9) but no more bigger than that.

I know everyone says Nintendo has to trump the PSP in graphics, and yeah that's important, but making the unit smaller should also be just as high of a priority.
 
Fucking eh, I agree. They are way to big for the screen res they are providing. Gimme 640x480 and you can get away with those sizes, but as they are now, forget it.
 
Well the reason I bring it up is because everyone is focused on the graphics, like that's the only place Nintendo could one-up Sony on.

Size should be just as much of a consideration IMO.

I wouldn't mind a smaller unit, even if it meant no GBA slot. Maybe sell a seperate adaptor or something for people who want that functionality.

Absolutely no to a disc based format. Even UMDs, I think are too big.
 
I'd like something exactly the same as the GBA SP but with a good screen that doesn't make the colours look washed out. I feel as though there still isn't a way to fully enjoy all my great GBA games.

Original GBA = worst screen ever, can hardly see anything
GBA SP = much better, but the screen is.. too bright or something, and the colours look crap
NDS = perfect screen, but the system is too big and uncomfortable
GB Player = slowdown for no apparent reason and not portable
 
I am trying hard to not get either based on size alone. But I may soon have to get a DS based on the awesome exclusive titles coming soon. :/
 
I think the GBA SP is great for portability but sometimes maybe a bit too small (your hands can cramp).

Something the size of an Apple i-Pod (give or take half an inch or so) would be ideal.

That would also give the "base" of the unit enough extra size to accomodate an analog stick or two.
 
But wait isn't the "Gameboy" title directed to kids? I've always thought at least. Sure a better screen and better graphics in the next one would be awsome but then again look at how expensive the PSP is right now and Sonys taking a big loss on units. People are bitching and complaining about that being to expensive for what it is capable of doing. I don't see the next GB being jamepacked with multimedia features etc, unless Nintendo is trying to appeal to an older demographic

Bottom line:

Bigger/better screen = $EXPENSIVE$

Well that's where I think the "three pillars" strategy (well at least two pillar) works.

The DS could tow the line as a $79-$99 budget handheld by the time GB Next comes out.

GB Next will probably be $150.

True, but I personally don't think the DS is going to live past it's own lifespan, unlike it's brother the GB/GBA/GBASP which all had Backwards compatibility most/if not all games on the DS use the touch screen and unless Nintendo is going to add a touch screen to the GB Next their third pillar will crumble.
 
Yeah, the next Gameboy must be strong on portability. I'd imagine a GBA SP, maybe a bit bigger with a really nice screen. The base could easily take two slots, one for GBA, one for media cards. If it's released next year, these could very easily start at 512MBs, going up to 1-2 gigs within a year or so. That way you'd have high quality games with no loading, super portability and durability. Also because there's no disc, you could push battery life, maybe even pushing towards 10 hours or so. It would also be cool if they chucked in some real speedy wireless so that you could get game sharing on with these games.

They could also easily add extras like a microphone and tilt sensor to make it a better device for games too. What would also be really cool is detachable analogue stick, so that way when it wears out, you can replace it easily increasing the durability. Also, add in SD card support perhaps to give a superior(as in cheaper) to psp solution for playing mp3s. That I think would be a killer product.
 
Nintendo needs to get on the phone with SNK to adapt their NGPC stick for analog. Clam shell too please, slip cases blow.

i dont believe it should be smaller. the psp at times cramp my hands and the ds has extremely small buttons. i do believe the clamshell design work best for portables. take note sony and make a psp sp

the whole point of the ngpc pad is that it uses microswitches. which wouldn't work for analog control.

i can see why nintendo might need two handhelds -- a kid-friendly gba successor and a high-end psp-alike. i don't see why they need the ds. but i guess it's selling. so hey.
 
I think it would be fine to offer GBA backwards comp. but add it via add-on, not to the base unit.

GBA carts take up too much space.

Maybe Nintendo should also consider a game downloading service which lets people download game software ala the i-Que service in China or the Nintendo Power service in Japan.
 
They should also move away from the Fisher Price school of design and come up with something sleeker looking.
 
What exactly could they remove from the PSP to make it any smaller while at the same time keeping the same screen size? It's not like it has a bunch of extra plastic or anything. It has four buttons, a d-pad, an analog nub, a memory stick port, wireless capability, and a UMD drive. IMO, that's a hell of a lot of stuff in such a small package.

Quite honestly, I'd really like it to be bigger. While it wouldn't be very portable, I'd actually like to see a handheld system that has handles like the console controllers. After two generations of using controllers like that, I'm finding it difficult to adjust to the PSP's NES-like layout.

While chatting it up with a friend of mine while working on a project he told me how Sony should have made the PSP with the ability to be folded in half. I then asked him if he meant like the DS or the GBA by having the controller on the bottom and the screen on top. He said no and he meant the same design of the PSP but just folded in half, screen and all. HE WAS DEAD SERIOUS.

Sorry for that little tangent you just reminded me of that story.
