"We've always said that we see the show as an adaptation of George's series, not this book or that book," Weiss explained. "It's definitely true that 'A Storm of Swords' is too big to even come close to fitting in one season. We've done some shuffling around of things -- as an example, there were some things from Book 2 that ended up in Season 1, and there are probably going to be some things in Book 2 that didn't make it into Season 2 or maybe won't show up later. Book 3 is definitely too much for a 10-episode season, so we're taking the long view of the series of the whole, and trying to do as much justice as possible to George's overall epic story and be as true to the spirit as we can, while keeping it an exciting and viable and vivid as a television show that stands on its own two legs."

As I said in my conversation with Weiss, it sounds as though the way to look at upcoming season (hopefully seasons) of the show are as portions of the overall saga, not sections of particular books.

"Yeah," Weiss said. "A season of television needs to feel like a season of television. We have so many storylines to juggle, and they all need to ideally have a sense of a beginning, middle and end over the course of a season. Each character needs to feel like they're traveling a specific road in the course of a season, and coming out as a different person than they went in. It's never going to be about taking a book and ripping it in half -- 'At page 673, this is the place where [the season] ends.' It comes down to case-by-case [decisions] with each story and how best to serve each character's story going forward."

Basically confirming that as of this season things are going to be incredibly fluid and you can't "promise" that something is going to be in this season or that season.

All bets are off now, then.

Given the constraints of television and the complexity of the books, that doesn't surprise me at all. It'll be interesting to see how they tweak the timing of things coming up.

So with season three pretty much a confirmed split series at this point, how is it going to work? I've not read the books yet, but from what I understand the character plots are split between the two books, surely they can't have half their cast doing nothing for a year, and then the other half the next year?

The quote that bengraven posted above explains it reasonably well.

to be honest, I'm not sure if the Reeds are needed. I wouldn't be surprised if they cut them out. Hodor and Osha (in particular) can probably fill in for most of the stuff they would do (foraging etc.). The only aspects they bring that aren't easily replaceable is Jojen teaching Bran about third eye/green seeing/magic (though Osha could potentially cover this with warging etc.), and some background about Ned/Howland and hints to Jon's parentage. I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but I could see them being cut altogether. The mystery of the crannogmen hasn't been explored at all, and since we got no Tower of Joy flashback, that part of the excitement about seeing Howland Reed's children is gone as well.

Not to say I wouldn't miss them. And the more rabid fans' uproar would be huge...

Spoilers related to quoted spoilers+Bran chapters in later books

The important part of the Reeds to me is seeing what Bran is missing as a cripple+what more he will lose if he becomes fused to the trees permanently.

If he was just a normal little lordling (with winterfell still in stark hands) it wouldn't be unlikely that he would marry Meera and watching Bran develop his mini crush and realize it will never be made me care about Bran for the first time in the entire series.

Maybe you're right about Osha filling in the gaps in their place. But when Osha and Rickon split from the Reeds, Bran and Hodor, it would seem to me illogical to remove the Reeds and let Bran and Hodor travel alone to the north. That just doesn't seem safe to let those two travel alone, and would therefore make the story less believable to me.

Whole series spoilers:
I wouldn't specify "Bran chapters in later books", especially given his fake death in CoK (and his probable fake death in S2). You're pretty much telling non-readers he lives through the series. Just a word of advice, though.

- Westeros.org: Interview with David Benioff and Dan Weiss *some ACoK spoilers*

Of interest:

Haha, I liked this part of the interview:
Q: Can I ask how many episodes you wrote for this season?
David: For season 2?

Q: Yeah.
Dan: We’re not done writing yet, so we can’t—
David: Season 2! Season 2!
Dan: Oh, season 2, the one we finished writing, yes…
David: Six episodes, Vanessa Taylor wrote two, Bryan Cogman and George wrote one each.

I agree with a lot of people here, all this talk of how they are gonna adapt future books with tons of black bars is terrible. We need to do that in one of the many other asoiaf threads.

Is it likely they will fake deaths just as the book has done? I know they've shown pictures of the fake Bran and Rickon bodies.
All books spoilers.

Brienne's casting so eerily matches what I'd pictured while reading. Fucking awesome.

Related note:

What do you guys notice your brains doing when a new character is introduced for the first time? I find I have to re-read the passage that describes their appearance at least twice to really try and build a proper image for them, but what usually ends up happening instead is that I'm so into the story that I just want to keep pushing forward. So, I just slap on the closest face I already have in mind (an actor in some role from somewhere else that first comes to mind), even if it doesn't match the description thoroughly (hair, eyes, height, etc.)

And I wonder why I'm surprised when a casting choice doesn't match the image in my head.... lol

Spoiler. C'mon man fix that ASAP. We need to stop talkin about the books in this thread, people aren't second checking what they write anymore because they been doing so many spoiler barred posts, sometimes they leak something without the black bars.

yeah, I suppose.

I read from that moment in SoS to the end of SoS over a weekend, so it seems like there isn't THAT MUCH left to do after 'that scene', but I could just be mixing up volume of content with how quickly I read it.

That's not actually THAT true.

[ASOS obviously]
After RW we still have Meereen, assault on Castle Black with Stannis arriving, Joffrey's wedding and death, Red Viper vs Mountain, Tyrion/Tywin, Eyrie and I'm only listing major events off the top of my head. That already is more than AGOT or ACOK had in terms of major happenings. And we still have Arya's journey towards the sea, the conclusion to Jaime's homecoming, Bran's continued venture north beyond the Wall. Some Ironmen plots are easily moved into late Season 4.

Even with RW being possibly S03 finale, or very close to it, we still have a whole lot of plot to sustain a whole season, with some of the more important events getting the care and focus they deserve.

Not to be a dick, or to defend unmarked spoilers, but if you haven't read the books I would strongly recommend just using the NO BOOK SPOILERS thread. Theoretically it's supposed to be safe for you in here, but accidents will inevitably happen.

Folks, just a reminder: please do not confirm which characters are alive in later books. Full spoiler rules are in the OP if you're confused about them. Thank you.

The vast majority of people discussing potential S3 details have read all the books. I see no reason for this discussion to dominate a thread designed to discuss season 2 and ACOK. We have an unmarked spoiler thread for ASOIAF, where book discussion goes - as well as speculation on the future of the show. IMO this discussion should go there.

Have bought every book since Game of thrones on day 1, and read each within a week. It's just that stating if someone is alive or not for the next few seasons should be seen as a complete no no because you want people to stay in suspense that all their favorite characters can go the way of Ned.

That thread is understandably stricter. Some of us have no problem comparing the book with the show up to the point in the show. I'm learning some fascinating stuff about Theon's sister.

Can someone explain this to me? I get that it's a line spoken in that last episode, but why is it so funny to everyone/meme status?

It was just an adlib from an extra in the scene. A possible allusion to the fact that Renly is gay.

Someone here noticed it and now it's one of those "can't unsee" things every time I watch that scene. That's really all there is to know about it. It's just funny.
