Count me as another person very interested in this game but just now learning the release date kills it for me for now. I will keep an eye on impressions and such.

I just want to stress that you should be very cautious about this game. Wait for reviews, especially if you were crazy enough to want it depite lacking money these days.

Watch for reviews. It will tell you want you need to know.

Like I said in the other thread, I know people who were working on this. I'll be a little bit more specific this time.
To be perfectly clear, this is a game that wants to be big but lack the budget, the talent and the direction to back it up.

They didn't know what to do with the combat system and redid it from scratch multiple times. They didn't have any experience doing this type of game. They got in contact with MArtin and his assistant twice at most. The "Martin approval" thing was just to be sure that the storyline doesn't contradict the books and future books.
Writing is bad and doesn't match the books or the show at all. On top of that remember that a French team did it (with a guy as lead writer who was described to me as "an idiot and Anakin Skywalker fan"), and the french translation of the books are atrocious and chaotic. Now imagine that then translated in english.

I won't even bring up the horrible balancing and the graphics.

Watch for reviews. It will tell you want you need to know. This will fool no one. When people working on a game use "unplayable and zero fun" to describe it, there is little hope.

Well that's horribly depressing, but not very surprising I guess.

Sad, if true. But like this game, I will be skeptical of this post as well.
I intend to leave the game wrapped until I get some impressions from GAF. If it sucks, I'll trade it in for Dragon's Dogma. No biggie, I'm covered for my RPG either way.

Why would someone bother to lie about it?

Think people should trust the post, tbh.

But he never even claimed to have played it. So at best he's relaying 2nd hand information, if not third hand.

And from the preview I saw earlier on gamespot the game didn't look nearly as bad as he claims.

I'm still waiting for reviews but I'm hopeful.

You're right. I didn't play it. And there is always a small possibility that I've been lied to until this day or maybe those people have weird taste or that their judgement was clouded by the problems during development.

That's why I said people should wait for reviews, and to be cautious.

No review one week before release is suspicious by the way.

In any case even If I hadn't had any insider info, I know the state of the videogame industry in my country. This doesn't bode well.

Don't worry,it's a harmless cautionary post, you got info and shared with us.

There will most likely be gaffer impressions from broken street date versions here on gaf before the release of the game like always, we will know for sure soon enough.

Plenty of games don't have early reviews. Every Ubisoft game, in fact.

Thanks for the warning. The only reason why I haven't pre-ordered this is because Cyanide has really produced nothing but shit. I know this is a different team, or whatever, and Atlus getting involved sends a good signal, but after that awful strategy game, I'm just going to remain cautious.

What they've shown looked pretty cool, but without more meaningful context it could really go either way.

The thing about that "cautionary" post is that it said the writing is shit. I find that one a bit tough to swallow since George RR Martin himself helped pen it and made sure it was all canon. I don't think he'd just rubber stamp it and collect a check.

I believe that part was addressed. Obviously we can't be sure of the truth, but he did talk about Martin's involvement.

Keep in mind that Martin has a shitload of things to do and in any case sure didn't write the dialogue and text of the game. This is basic PR stuff. In theory it's awesome, in practice, someone else did the job.

It is also a videogame and not a core piece of the franchise. I was also told they made the dialogue "accessible" to a broad audience, aka, dumbed it down. I don't know who translated it, though. It may save something.

On a bright note, most of the team is made of fans of the books.

Well, I'm not saying he lied about it, but I don't take everything I read on the internet as a truth. I'm taking it into consideration. It helps reaffirm my position of leaving it wrapped, and waiting on GAF impressions.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaah no. I've seen this happen much too frequently in the industry. :)

I know people who used to work in the Montreal studio and they hated it there. I'm not surprised to read what you're saying - the state of the French game industry is pretty bad.

To be fair, I don't know a lot of people who are able to enjoy the games they worked on, much less games they worked on for 2+ years.

And while someone else said Ubisoft doesn't do early reviews, they indeed don't most of the time, but Atlus very rarely doesn't. Usually there's something up on Destructoid like a week early or something. Not this time.

So far, the only western-made game that Atlus seems to have had any sort of success with is Rock of Ages? Their other games are pretty bad, sadly. I guess it's the growing pains of a developer who needs to publish games to stay afloat but don't have the talent to scope out good projects from bad projects?

I believe that warning brought my expectations back down to where they were before I saw some of the gameplay videos. The videos showed some potential but there wasn't enough detail to really determine whether or not the mechanics where executed well. I'll still keep an eye on the reviews and impressions, though.

Well, I was at a demo yesterday. Didn't get a chance to play it, mostly because I couldn't be bothered to wait for a turn, but also because they had a couple copies of the art book on display.

Spent a few minutes thumbing through it, and man, is it ever great. Want to buy the book alone... somehow.

The IP is too great. I'm getting it day 1 now, just for the artbook. I know the performance for the PS3 version will be less than desired and be riddled with tearing, but I'll make an exception for Game of Thrones. At least the voice acting sounds decent.

You mean while the show is getting crazy high viewers and acclaim?

Yup agreed, they should have waited til late summer when GOT fever was dead.

Releasing a PC RPG on the same day as Diablo 3 is retail suicide regardless of what license they have.

That has to be the worst impression of a game I've ever read. Interest went from like a 7 after reading the OP's bullet-points to a negative 7 after reading this post. Talk about a dagger, wow.

I was fairly excited for this until that post. :( Let's hope it doesn't turn out too bad. If anything we might see the license go to a more deserving developer in the future.

That sounds like exactly the kind of thing he might do. He's a busy man. After all the football is watched and the pizza eaten, there's only so much time left in a day. I get a distinctly George Lucas vibe from him these days.

I canceled my preorder, I will still keep an eye on it and as long as it gets ok reviews I will pick it up. That post made it sound like it may turn out terrible though.

Well it could turn out miraculously ok like Cities XL who had similar stupid management. Or the GoT skin can be enough for a lot of people. Don't lose all hope, just be cautious.

Isn't Atlus pretty bad about not sending review copies for the smaller games they publish? Any games journalism GAF able to confirm if they've gotten a copy yet? The game has arrived at my local Gamestop, so it's definitely out in the wild.

Games + Artbook preorder is only on Gamestop,EB Games,Amazon.com,Amazon.ca,HBO store

Thanks. I'm getting it from Amazon with the $0.98 release day shipping. It can't be *that* bad can it? I mean, Atlus doesn't publish shitty games does it? It had to have interested them somewhat for them to grab it.

Oh well, if it sucks, lesson learned. Don't buy from unknown developer, even if IP is great. :p

Looks like it has the production values of an Xbox1 game.

Is this a situation similar to the Vivendi-Universal Lord of the Rings games, where the publisher has the rights to the novels, but not to the likenesses of the actors or art design of the filmed adaptation?

I'm pretty sure they're using the likenesses of actors and stuff for the game. I've only seen a pic of Jeor Mormont though:
