Game sales down in 2004 (Gamespot)

The top 10 console games of 2004 said:
1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) - 5.1 million
2. Halo 2 (Xbox) - 4.2 million
3. Madden NFL 2005 (PS2) - 3.2 million
4. ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) - 1.5 million
5. Need for Speed Underground 2 (PS2) - 1.4 million
6. Pokémon FireRed (with adapter) (GBA) - 1.2 million
7. NBA Live 2005 (PS2) - 1.2 million
8. Spider-Man 2 (PS2) - 1.1 million
9. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox) - 1.1 million
10. ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)- 1.0 million

I didn't expect to see Halo up there... (but I probably should have)

haha... someone has to say it. DOOMCUBE

The biggest trend of note was that portable software sales broke the $1 billion mark for the first time ever, thanks to the introduction of the Nintendo DS. Total software sales "also continued to set new records, with sales exceeding $6.2 billion, an increase of 8 percent in overall sales when compared with $5.8 billion in 2003," NPD said.

go DS!

So Halo was the biggest selling franchise in 2004 by quite a margin?

You'd have to keep track of GTA sales on PC and Xbox to know this for sure.

And the article says unit sales are up 4%, so people are being smart and waiting on price drops for stuff that won't stay $50 for ages. Makes me wonder how third parties think jacking up prices next gen is going to work wonderfully for them.

So of the top ten selling games last year, 100% of them were released in the last half of the year, and almost half were released in the last two months of the year. No wonder no one releases games before August.

What I dont understand, is why Pokemon Leaf Green is not listed. It sold 1.097 million copies at likely an equal ASRP to that of Fire Red ($32) which should put it squarely at 9. It's certainly only 10 at the lowest due to ESPN's sales being at $20

Not necessarily, unless I'm reading it wrong GTA3 and Vice City combined would have to sell 200,000 or so to even it up.

According to the December NPD thread, the GTA franchise sold over 360K in just December across all the other GTA games.

It's sad that I only own one of those "top ten" games. ESPN NFL 2K5 for the PS2. That's it. And I won't be getting the next installment of that this year, will I? ~cries and screams "WHY EA, WHY!?"~ :D

Total: 368,118

So...

Halo + Halo 2 = 5.3m
GTA:SA+RestofGTfranchise = 5.45m
Madden = ??

Those were just the December numbers, not for the entire year so the GTA series total is higher than that.

Actually that's the year end total of GTA:SA + only DECEMBER sales of the rest of the GTA franchise. There's 11 months of sales for the rest of the franchise outside of San Andreas not yet accounted for.
