Game soundtracks that overdelivered

After listening to the most recent Super Marcato Bros podcast on sports games, and reading the "games that overdelivered" thread, I thought this might be a fun topic.

My suggestion comes straight from the podcast... The Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series. I mean, check out the music to the Uneven Bars event

Not to mention incredible arrangements of other classic Mario and Sonic songs, including this legit big-band arrangement of the Super Mario World staff roll

And the solos in this ska rendition of Cool Cool Mountain from Mario 64 are out of this world

For a series that I'd expect to have Mario Party tier music, this game goes above and beyond. I'd love to hear any other recommendations for terrible-to-average games that have outstanding soundtracks!

Edit: To be clear, I'm not talking about good games with good soundtracks to match. I mean mediocre games that have soundtracks that have no right to be so good!

Shadow of the Colossus if we are talking a positive connotation. It's genius composed.

Otherwise, God of War 3. All that bluster for nothing underneath.

Hotline Miami 2 probably fits though that's obviously personal preference

Gameplay wise I found it to be pretty disappointing but the music is as good as ever

Also Trials of the Blood Dragon

This one shovelware called The Smurfs' Nightmare on GBC.

I have not even played the game but this is one of the better game soundtracks I've heard, and it's for a Smurfs game, holy shit.

Wow, that's what I'm talking about! That's awesome, love when the bass kicks in. I guess a lot of 8 bit games could fall under this category now I think about it. Especially C64 games

The first few songs on the No Man's Sky soundtrack are really good as well as the song used in the reveal trailer.

Back when PC games had music as CD audio tracks, I used to listen to soundtracks for games like Quake 2 and Mechwarrior 2.

Mega Man X6

If you aren't headbanging to Blaze Heatnix, you have no soul.

Complete shit game, but has arguably the best OST in the entire MM franchise. Same dude did the Ace Attorney games and a ton of Platinum's stuff.

Furi, for me. Still haven't played the game through, but that soundtrack is something fantastic especially considering it gave us our first Danger EP 2 years and the other contributors gave some top-tier music.

The first two PC Harry Potter games were utterly mediocre at best, but they had a very memorable soundtrack by Jeremy Soule.

the OST in melty blood is amazing. its strange and unique in how not a single one of the tracks is objectively hard for me to enjoy. a lot of em are a bit short, but theyre made that way cuz all the fights are so fast

custom robo is another thing with musique that im particularly into. i can only really describe it as electronic, but all of these tracks are just so cool and catchy, and they fit their respective stages, environments, interactions, and canon fights really well. hell, the customization screen music is the most nostalgic thing in my life

now i want to play both of these, ugh

An old example has to be Soukaigi on PlayStation. Really not a great game but I thought it sounded quite unique. It was composed by the same guy behind Secret of Mana's beautiful soundtrack but with an actual band this time. Has that 90s game sound, though, which I secretly love.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

Battle 2
Battle 3

Honestly, most tracks on the OST are fantastic

Battle 1 is incredible as well.

Brb, going to play Theatrhythm.

Sigma 2 is my favorite, personally, but BH seems to be the most listed when talked about the ost so I went with that.

Ground Scaravich is amazing too, as is Blizzard Wolfgang . Even have a softspot for Commander Yammark .

Seriously probably one of my top 5 OST's ever for a game. If the game was even halfway decent I'd probably have beaten it a hundred times over by now just to jam out to the OST.

I have actually played the game several times only to find an excuse to listen to that OST.

Mild regrets.

Starfox Assault.
The remix of Meteo is simply incredible.

Hitoshi Sakimoto delivers a brilliant soundtrack to a rather mediocre game.

Super Darius 2 - This was a port of Darius 2 for the PC-Engine CD. Zuntata took full advantage of the medium.

Shame it's a pretty bad port otherwise.

Phantasy Star Online 2 has an insane OST for a F2P MMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKXR-gO3vU8
