GameBoy Evolution Speculation

yes but this press release:

"...all the incredible details about Nintendo's upcoming games and hardware, including [their] next home console, code-named Revolution..."

seems to imply hardware other than the revolution

Hardware. Revolution, rumbleshiznitz, microphones, DS camera. It won't be the next GBA (if that thing ever is going to come out).

Found this, not sure if it was already posted.

I would immediately buy that. Not sure if it would work with nintendos apparently philosophy that a handheld must be able to withstand domestic abuse though.

looks great. a neat idea, but completely unfeasible if you think about it. there's a reason that he is showing it from only one angle.

i do hope they remove the gba slot in the next DS iteration though. I've got my micro for GBA games. I'd prefer to lose GBA gameplay on the DS for a smaller handheld.

             | GBE (GCN+/- quality) 2007?
             | or GBE (GCN+/- quality) 2008?

Based on the trend since the GBC, it makes sense that GBE would come out in 2007. However, the handheld successors are coming faster than the console successors, so if Nintendo wants to avoid having the same quality on a handheld as on a console (based on past experience that is the case), I'd say 2008 makes more sense from a purely timeline-based analysis. With NDS doing pretty good compared to its competition (i.e. holding the frontline until the next GameBoy can come out), 2008 shouldn't be a detriment to Nintendo's handheld format.

The major question at that point is "Can the GBA remain a viable platform until 2008?" I don't think so, so that could move up the release of the GBE. New software announcements from Nintendo for the GBA could go a ways to extending its lifetime, though. Also, NDS backwards compatibility is a big help for publishers to continue supporting GBA games.

As to what I expect from a GBE ...

1. Obviously from the chart, I'm expecting around GCN power for it.
2. Won't play GCN disks.
3. Will use very large (in storage, not size) cartridges.
4. Download GBC/GB games through Nintendo WFC.
5. Backwards compatible to GBA cartridges-only.
6. $100 at launch (maybe a $150 version with large SD card included).
7. Online-enabled through Nintendo WFC.
8. Still geared towards 2-D graphics, though more 3-D than the NDS.
9. Won't be designed for movies or music.

I don't know whether it'll be backwards-compatible with NDS games or not, but I doubt it. The NDS might not getting a successor until the timeframe that GBC came out for GB (not counting re-designs). Two screens might be included, though, as the DS has shown some really good uses of two screens (persistent maps, expanded play screen), in my opinion. However unless it does have backwards-compatibility with the NDS, it shouldn't have a touch-screen.

Does anyone give a shit about this at this point? The PSP and the DS are the perfect handheld combo, I don't want to see that changed any time soon. Also, PSP2 will have a touch screen, I'm willing to bet on that.

Every fucking quarter, i swear.

Oh yes. And it's fucking sad.

I see many Nintenbots here that are soooo conditionned to almost yearly new handhelds now.
How about wishing for "GENERATIONS" of handhelds, you know, i wish my DS could be exploited for 3-4 year at the very fucking least. In reality we need a new gameboy in 2009 or something, enjoy what you have right now instead of always wanting the new gadget, jeez.

Something else interesting about the GBE, is the possibilty that it might adapt some of the RevCon features. I can imagine the handheld being customizable, so the possibility of attaching new hardware (Touch Screens, Keyboards, New Shells, etc..), very much like the RevCon setup. I could even see it being able to combine with the RevCon itself, to make something even more interesting. Anyway, I guess will see sooner or later.
