Gamefly vs. Gameznflix

This just happened to me too! (GameFly)

I had Burnout: Paradise City in my 4th spot with the other three game before it being HIGH availability. My number one is Tomb Raider: Anniversary and that's been readily available for a while now. But instead of sending me that, they sent me Burnout.

I just kind of shrugged away my disappointment for not getting Tomb Raider. I'm blowing through Burnout anyway and hopefully when that goes back I'll finally get it.

Also, with the new distribution center in Philadelphia, PA, my turn around time has been great lately. (I live in northern New Jersey.)

this is the center that sends me my games, as well, and i get them really quickly (kentucky)

I've been using gamefly for almost 2 years now. What I've noticed is in the first few months everything was immediately available. Now I'm lucky if I see 1 thing on my queue that is available. Everything is high availability, medium etc. Even 2+ year old PS2 games. I suspect that they show you a different stock status depending on if you are a new user or not to give you the impression that they have everything in stock. Also shipping seemed to be faster when I was a new user. Now it takes at least 4 days from when I get shipping notice to actually get the game.

That's weird then, doesn't seem like I got any preferential treatment. It might be because I am a returning customer instead of a new one, I guess.

This whole one game on the list thing seems like such a hassle. I will cut out the games at the bottom of my queue to help a little, but I'm not too keen on having to babysit the thing so meticulously. With Netflix I would adjust my list once every two weeks or so.

I've only done the '1 game in Q' thing for brand new, popular releases like Call of Duty 4 and Mass Effect. It worked quite well as they were both shipped the day GameFly got them. But if I have a game that's been out for a while (TR: Anniversary) and it's at the top of my list, I shouldn't have to go through the same process just so they'll send it to me. It's number 1 on my priority list for a reason GameFly!

The key is, empty out your queue of all games except the one you really one (Pro Tip: Make a .txt file on your desktop with what games you want, add them to your queue manually). I keep hearing this is a confirmed as working thing, however I haven't had a game on the top of my list that I haven't received yet, so I can't say this works from personal experience. Worth a try before you quit the service.

This is confirmed...to an extent. The CS rep I spoke with about this issue was like, "shocked" I would attempt this, almost over-acting, because it is "not for sure" you will get a game even if you leave it as your only title in the queue. Truth is, and they will never admit it, is they have to have an algorithm in place that punishes high-frequency renters and older-members in order to give newer, free-trial members priority so they think the service is fast and dependable.

I've yelled at them frequently to fix their availability system, but I think every major online rental service uses the same technology - Blockbuster, NetFlix, GameFly, etc. They all POOL every single "distribution center" inventory to determine availability, but most of the time based on your address, you are "region coded" and if your center is out, but every center has a copy, it will say "AVAILABLE" but you will not get it shipped. This is a really poor system and the way around it is to, sadly, have to clear your queue to "force" a title to ship sometimes. I've had NetFlix and GameFly ship me games from centers not in my region just to get me my title cuz I only had that one in my queue.

NOW, the exception is, like with me, I've called so many times to complain and said I do this to bypass their crappy system and they should fix it, I've seen an AVAILABLE title sit in my queue for days with an open slot, and I've had to call and yell at them and they then say "we're not sure why it says available" and then it changed to "Low" by the time my call ended. So they're sneaky bastards sometimes.

Basically, the best advice is to

1) Only have the games you want in your queue that you want immediately, and save a list of the games you want after if they involve CURRENT RELEASES.

2) If it is upcoming releases, have an open slot BEFORE the game comes out, like at least 3 days, and make that new game the only title. YOU WILL GET IT. Hasn't failed me yet.

3) Call and complain if you haven't gotten a game shipped or hasn't been received. They will clear your spot.

4) If you absolutely must have a title and you sent it in, but you don't think it will get their in time, use the report a title lost feature - it will clear that title out and as long as they get it, you won't get in trouble*

*Sadly, I think they've caught onto this tactic and now it no longer does this. I used this about 3-4 times cuz it was a hot new title coming and I was not convinced they'd get my game and clear the slot in time. Now it won't clear until the game is "received" or "their investigation finishes".

NetFlix is still superior customer service. You call, you get a free extra move sent out. GameFly is getting more anal because I am sure jerks report games lost and just keep them, especially for new games or rare titles.

If you're using GamesnFlix for games, never put movies in your queue because that's all you'll ever get. I've had GnF since October 07 and have received 2 games in that time even though games are always at the top of my queue. I read the reviews before I signed up so I knew that GnF sucked for games. I don't want to only put games in my queue and risk the 3 month turnaround times I've read about.

For me it was GnF versus Netflix instead of GnF versus GameFly. Since GnF's 3-out plan is cheaper than Netflix's 2-out plan, I went with GnF. The turnaround time has gotten really bad, though. If I send in my movies on Monday, I won't get anything until at least the following Monday, even though the processing center is 30 miles from where I live. Right now, I'm getting about 7 movies shipped per month. Add the fact that GnF has no TV series and big gaps in its movie collection (Schindler's List, City Slickers, Evil Dead, Titanic, Caddyshack off the top of my head), I'd have to say it sucks for renting DVDs too.

After 7 months, I've decided I'm going to cancel my GameFly account and go back to GnF. I typically have games out for 5-6 weeks since I rarely get to play them and at $25 a month for 2 games, it just isn't worth it to me any longer. $17 for 3 games is too good for me to pass up, so I'm going back.

The new GnF site is even more obnoxious than before and I couldn't locate their distro centers on it.. I remember they used to have a bunch (8 or so), so I hope they have one close to Chicago. When I was with GnF before, I typically had a pretty good experience, so I'm hoping for the best.

I live in Pittsburgh. There is supposedly a Gamefly distribution center in town. It appears to take 2 - 3 days min to get a game in. I haven't rented games online since last year. Is this long? I am also going fire GnF back up. I just list the price way more. GF just seems to expensive.

For my final month of GnF before I cancelled, I removed all the movies from my queue and left 20something wii games on it to see if I could get any games shipped. I received nothing that month. I'm now a happy Netflix subscriber.

canceled my gamefly account and switched to netflix. gamefly wasn't reliable enough sending me things i wanted, and movies are too easy to tear through.

Just wanted to give kudos to GameFly...again.

I used the "1 game in Q" trick again and it worked again. This time it was for GTA4. They sent it to me the day before it came out and I had it 2 days later. I only had GTA alone in the Q for maybe 2 or 3 days. Gamefly delivered for me once again.

This trick also worked for Mass Effect and COD4. I'm not sure if I'm lucky or if my account gets looked at first because of my long time membership with them (1.5 years), but it keeps working for me. :D

Holy shit this was my worst decision ever. I received 3 games total from them in this time period. 2 of them (Tiger Woods 2007 for 360) and Wario Ware for Wii did not even work. I got some movies as well that I've watched, but I sure as shit didn't get $40 worth of service. Oh well, what can ya do.

well since this is bump
I've been using GF for 6 yrs and right now I'm pissed that I'm still waiting for MGS4 to be ship for 2 fucking weeks.

look GF just ship it to me and I'll KEEP IT

Gamefly just lost respect in my book - MGS4 was sitting at the top of my queue since 6/12/08, and there's STILL no confirmation of the game even shipping.

Even worse is how I need to play this for review (need the review finished by July 5th, which I figured would be plenty of time for Gamefly to get it to me, but I guess not :/ ), and all of the Blockbusters in my area have them rented out, so I was FORCED to buy a copy for full price from Best Buy earlier today.

I mean, there are worse punishments in the world than buying Metal Gear Solid 4, but it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing! I pay money for their service, I want a damn game delivered to me when its released!

Have you taken into consideration all the other people in your exact situation. Unless you are quick on the ball you aren't going to get a high profile game with the first few weeks of release.

I tried GnF a few years ago and their shipping was horrible. I waited for 2 weeks for 2 games, and then reported them lost. About 2 weeks later, I finally get the "lost" copies as well as the second copies GnF shipped to me. I canceled after the first month and sent them their games. Never had that issue with GF.

I live in PA, so ever since GF opened the distribution a mere 45 minutes away, it only takes two or three days for the send and receive cycle, I love it.

Congratulations, you just figured out what most of us already knew.

IF YOU WANT A NEW RELEASE GAME KEEP AN EMPTY SLOT OPEN THE DAY OR DAY BEFORE IT RELEASES!

It's not that hard people No, it doesn't work ALL the time for EVERYONE but it's worked so far for me in the past except for one game and I think it was Conan or something. It just worked for me in the last month on Ninja Gaiden II, MGS4 and Incredible Hulk. I didn't do it with Iron Man and that game has been low available since it came out, I mean freaking Iron Man. How long do you keep games out, a week, two weeks? Well guess what, just about everyone else who rents from gamefly does the same thing.

MANAGE YOUR QUEUE'S PEOPLE!

I live in South Jersey and GameFly's turnaround times were terrible..about a week+, and several games just never arrived.. Ultimately I cancelled

Last year, however, they opened a distribution center in PA. The turnaround times are now fantastic. when a game ships, it can come within 1-2 days.

Also, I dont think they have preferential treatment to new users. I have been a subscriber for a year now, and I put MGS4 in my Q the day before it came out..and it still shipped to me the first day.

i just keep an empty slot for whatever new game i want and they send it to me the day before its released... easy as that

I used to be a subscriber to GF earlier in the year, but quit after they kept sending me games from the California center (I live in Wisconsin) thus, the turnaround times being unbearably slow.

I'm no geography major, but I would think the other dist. centers they have now are a little closer by me than California. I e-mailed them about it, and finally after a couple days, they just reply back saying that I'm located in the the region where CA center ships, and cannot request to receive games from other locations (which are closer!) It's a crock a shit. Shitty customer service and quality for a great idea (renting games online)

I wish Netflix shipped games :(

GamezNFilx is TERRIBLE. I live in California where they have a distro warehouse, and it still took weeks for them to get me "available" games. Also, their selection isn't 1/2 as good as GF, and GnF takes weeks to post new games if ever.

I started with Gamefly on a friday night. My first 2 games shipped on Saturday and I received them on Wednesday ( I live in AZ), I thought 3 business days was great.

I dropped one of the games in the mail this Monday and they still have not gotten it and haven't shipped anything new.

I guess I was spoiled by Blockbuster since when I brought then to the store they would scan and a new movie would be shipped. I checked gamefly's site about "fast return" and am going to see if any local post offices from work or home will scan the game so I can get a new one faster.

The "1 game Q" trick worked again for me with MGS4 this time. Maybe I'm just getting lucky, but I do put a certain amount of planning into making sure they ship me a newly released game.

I make sure I have a slot open (I can have 2 games out) at least 3 days before the release of the game I want.

I make sure that the game I want is the ONLY thing in my Q for at least 3 days before the launch. Having games in the Q that have future release dates are fine because they can't send you a game that hasn't been released yet.

And that's pretty much it. I figure out when I should send a game back so I have that empty slot by a certain time.

I've had no issues with them at all lately. My games are received quickly and they're sent back quickly.

I've been a member for over a year and I still don't understand a lot of complaints. I have a lot of unreleased games in my queue (mostly unreleased, generally 1 or 2 released and older games) and they ship them to me the day of release.

Gameznflix lets you have more games out at a time for less money.

Gamefly has much, much, much better selection, to the point where you can pretty much get any game released day one if you've had it sitting in your queue for awhile.

I'd say gamefly is better. It probably saves me over 500 dollars a year in games. With it, you don't have to pick up every game that's new for 60: rent it from gamefly, beat it, then pick it up for 20 when you're hankering to replay it or to fill out your collection a year later.

I used to use Gamefly, but got terrible service all around and quit. Now, every few months, I sign up for the Blockbuster Game Pass and get to play all the games I would want, when I want to. It's the same price and I actually control, for the most part, what I get. I ask when they are receiving a certain game in, and if I want it right away, I show up that day and have had no issues receiving it. I also use BB for online movie rentals, so it works well as I am always returning movies for free in store rentals. Win-win.

I'm confused... there are no slots in the queue you can make "empty"; once you remove game #4 from the queue, game #5 moves up to the #4 slot, #6 moves up to the #5 slot, etc.

I guess I have to try the one game in queue trick as Gamefly has been letting me down for months now. Probably because of all you fuckers doing the same trick. The situation with Wii games has been terrible; I often get the fifth or lower game in my queue. I just got a PS3 and it looks like the situation for that system is no better. Even Uncharted, which came out a year ago, isn't a guaranteed get. I've complained and threatened to quit but the situation hasn't improved. Get more copies, Gamefly!

I called my post office and the they said the only way anything gets scanned is if you bring to a clerk You can't just drop it in the mail.*sigh* Well it looks like I'll be waiting for my next game but when I'm done with either one I'm going to physically bring it to the post office and ask them about it. It's only 1/2 mile from my work it's ok if I have to be there but sometimes the line sucks.

I think they both suck.
Many will disagree, but I just don't feel either is worth the money based on the quality of service.

Especially with how cheap games are on Amazon usually. Also, just trade in the games you don't feel any emotional attachment for. You'll have lots of store credit after a while, so games don't really cost all that much.

It isn't worth it. Not even close. Even with the coupon online that makes 3 items out at GnF $12.75, it still isn't worth it. Like I said, I've only received 3 games total (2 in the trial period, 1 since) and 2 of them didn't work.

Other than that, I've just sat and nothing sends even if it indicates it's Ready to Ship or Short Wait. They just offered me 14 days of free service.. I asked they refund my June fees and just let me cancel instead. We'll see how that goes..

I'm extremely happy with gamefly, but have not tried GnF. Anecdotal evidence: I put my games to return in the mail on Monday. They were off my list by Tuesday morning. Today, Battlefield: BC arrived at my house. I consider that great turnaround. I live in Tampa Bay, btw.

I tried Gamefly then Gameznflix then Gamerang. All had pretty bad turnaround times and I rarely got the games I wanted unless they were new releases and I put them as the only game on my queue. I then tried using Goozex... the idea of trading games was cool but in practice it's TERRIBLE! There is huge demand for all the major new games (going back about six months or so) and very little supply. And if you want to trade your old games there will be the opposite problem... huge supply but very little demand.

Since then I've gone back to buying games and selling them on Craigslist when I'm done. Much better solution overall since you don't feel like you have to rush through games and you can get whatever you want.

An even better solution is to only buy good games and to play Arcade/PSN stuff between major releases.

Netflix does games now?
This reply is a month late, but my point is that GamezNFlix didn't do games for me (2 games in 6 months with movies+games in queue, 0 games in 1 month with only games in queue). So there's no point in comparing a cheap, crappy movie rental service (GnF) to a good, expensive game rental service (GF). Since all I was getting were movies, switching to a movie service with 2-day turnaround, a large catalog, and shipping from top-of-queue (Netflix) was preferable to keeping a movie service with 5-day turnaround, crappy catalog, shipping from middle-of-queue, and a game once in a blue moon (GnF).

I have been thinking of subscribing to Gamefly after seeing all the games coming out later this year, and next year that I want to play, but not really keep. I am just wondering about how reliable they are for getting you a game the day it is released? I am in Philadelphia, so I am just wondering how that will all work out. Reading ealier in this thread it seems like shipping to East coast has problems or something?

You should be good now they have a distribution center in Pittsburgh. i live in new york and get my games in two day most of the time. As for new games if you have them at the top of you q with nothing else being available you should get it sent on release day or the day before. For example they sent me madden on the Monday before release and i received the game on Wednesday.

GnF isn't a service it's a scam. Last time I checked they had multiple Better Business Bureau investigations going on. I used them for about a year one time. The first couple of months it was great. Then i totally stopped receiving games.

Welp, looks like one of the games that I returned to Gamefly may have been lost in the mail on its way back. If they decide to charge me, this will probably be an interesting phone call.

Im thinking about getting rid of gamefly, seems that if they dont ship the game on the day it comes out, you chances of receiving it. I have 8 games in my queue and nothing has shipped to me in 2 weeks.

GameznFlix is a waste of time though, super cheap but not worth it.

Thanks.

I am thinking of just doing one game at a time, and only for a few games. Like, later this month I will buy Infinite Undiscovery, but rent Mercenaries 2 or something like that.
