No id Tech? Lol.
No Forzatech or Anvil Next is crazy.
Its gameranx they googled "game engine" then made a 30 minute video out of the results.

Consider one of the best looking games to date is Alan Wake 2 running on NorthLight and it didnt make the list.
But CryEngine did.........other than Hunt Showdown which is impressive what the fuck how CryEngine ranking but idTech and Northlight arent?

Haven't watched the vid but CoD in SP can look stunning and match it with the best on some scenarios… while being one of the most versatile MP engines its entire reason for existing at this point.

I forgot that Alan Wake wasn't Unreal 5. Wow, I agree that's a big oversight.

And what about Zouna Engine that powers MS Flight Simulator and Plague's Tale? Just big misses on this list.

CoD engine also targets 60fps, but it has it's inner branches (3 of them at least) so it's not correct to name it under single umbrella.

So far, form end-product standpoint DECIMA is a clear champion though.

Since 2022 they have all moved to a unified engine. im guessing its for easier Warzone and Call of Duty App thingy integration.
I believe the branch they decided was the master branch is the one which Infinity Ward used for Modern Warfare II.
Treyarch and Sledgehammers branches were likely merged back in and now all the studios share the same codebase and add as needed concurrently.

Wasn't kingdom come 2 a cryengine game?

Goes without saying but a "game engine" can't look good. A game can look good. Maybe a game engine has some features that make some games look particularly good but that's not the same thing.

I remember it used to be some modified Quake 2 engine. At this point it must be quite different.

Thats ancient.

id tech just released a couple of games with RT and 60 fps on consoles. (Series S).

Its quite upto date and impressive.
When it was released with Metal Gear, it was the best engine ever created...

It even made me want to buy soccer games, just for that engine, and I hate soccer. If they had updated it, the Fox engine would have been great.

Metal Gear Solid V came out 10 years ago

The game still looks neat and clean and it performed really well back in the day but literally nothing has been done with it since. Maybe Survive I don't know.

Correct.

Consider many people would tell you Unity isnt a good looking engine.
Yett one of the most crushing Graphical Tech Demos available was made using Unity.
Sooooo........

But its Gameranx, they are a content farm no nuance, near zero research.....just make the video get the clicks.

Demo in question:

It was impressive back then.

Current gen has taken a bit of a toll on new engine development. They are expected to offer RT, no pop in, run on entry level console hardware etc.

Not many players can make it. CDPR gave up on pretty impressive Red Engine that made Cyberpunk.

Kdc 2 and star citizen is impressive technically though.
