Gamereactors editor in chief "I was blasted over Uncharted 2 review" + review scores

I got the latest gamereactor magazine, and translated (loosely) this article (from swedish) which I thought was interesting.

Many gamers got real upset with my Uncharted 2 review. I was called an idiot (on local forums) and on an american forum when my review got translated (hello neogaf? :lol ) I was called even worse things. The reactions were very strong despite giving it an 8, which is "great" on our scale. It didn't matter, apparently it was two steps too low.

A couple of weeks ago, it was time for the release of Call of Duty MW2. It was called a masterpiece in advance and the super high scores soon was released. I was one of those who didn't agree. The lynch atmosphere had returned. If I took every insult personally over my reviews, I would soon go under. Instead, I have last two months played those games again and thought a lot on the that genre's development. Even though I was one of those a couple of years ago that wished for more movie like games from Hollywood, I know today that I want something else.

To make movie like games isn't bad when you look at the sales numbers. Easy played action-adventures with directed cut-scenes and episodic high tempo variation sells like hot cakes. But is it really good for the game industry's development? Is it the right path for the action genre to go? I dont believe so. Even though CoDMW has sold like crazy, and that both EA and Ubisoft plan to modernize Medal of Honor and Ghost Recon according to Infite Ward's market attractive concept; many of us who love the genre might grow tired of the linear structure and the self playing difficulty.

CoD2:MW and Uncharted 2 were both memorable journeys through chaotic environment, it was like watching Hollywood -matinée with your thumb on the button. I understand that a wide audience like playing an interactive movie. But I want to play something else, I want to get challenged by more ways then by unlimited enemy soldiers that pops up everywhere in every direction. For me storylike matinée's and easy game mechanics isn't enough. I want to fight my wars and tear my hair apart by puzzles in Himalaya. An interactive movie isn't enough.

Also, here is Gamereactors review scores for March 2010:

(some games have two reviews)

Yakuza 3 - 7
Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight - 8
God of War III - 8 and 9
FFXIII - 7
BFBC2 - 8 and 9
White Knight Chronicles 7
Just Cause 2 - 8
Perfect Dark (360) - 6
Mega Man 10 - 7

An interactive movie isn't enough.

Sorry to tell you, bro, but we´re losing that fight :(
I´ve been writing about this for years, but whenever you mention something like that, it´s inevitable to touch on some of the big, hyped games. Which are usually accompanied by a very vocal "fan"-following.

But yeah, I whole-heartedly agree. I´d love for games to become MORE interactive, instead of less. Story should be part of the gameplay or left in the background (see Mass Effect for the former, Zelda for the latter). Unfortunately, movie-like games are successful, even on "hardcore" communities like neogaf.

well yeah, uncharted 2 is a game that should be bad and boring but is done really fucking well, a lot of Sony's western games are like this.

Okay...

It would only be ironic if he had given it an 8.8.
I've never understood the way people get upset about review scores. At the end of the day you have a great game to play and more things to do. Nobody will care in a year or two even when other games come out that improve all around. There's sometimes commentary that worth calling out(Eurogamers Resistance 1 review for example) where they didn't even play the game. But the rage over decimal points etc is silly.

And so it begins.

OH NOES A N64 PORT IS GETTING A 6 BUT IT'S SO FUCKING TIMELESS THIS GUY HAS NO FUCKING CLUE

I usually think viciously disagreeing with review scores is silly, but seriously:

One of the best regarded N64 games ever made with:

60 FPS
high-res textures
Upped poly count for characters and weapons
8 player online
2 player co-op
Expanded multiplayer weapons
Several control options

...for 800 points

is worth a 6?

They honestly could have done a slap-dash port like Banjo Kazooie, but no, 4J studios worked their ass off on stuff they didn't even NEED to do and are charging us less money then straight N64 points with absolutely no enhancements on the Virtual Console.

Oh, fuck you.

I've never played Perfect Dark, but this was my reaction too. Have I been brain washed by GAF?

I played the crap out of Goldeneye though, so I feel my excitement for PD is justified.

Well its good to know we have vastly different taste in games.

*thumbs up*

PS

Claiming MW2 plays itself is simply moronic.

The EIC at gamereactor sweden seem to have ( at least what I've gathered from reading his reviews and blog over the years ) a certain tendency to set his personal hopes WAY too high for big titles.

Going into games like UC2 and GOW3 hoping itll be infinite orgasms in a gamecase then he'll end up giving those kind of games 7s and 8s rather than 9s or 10s .

I wrote him a scathing letter of how he OVERRATED Uncharted 2. Any outlet rating it above a 7 is obviously in Sony's pocket.

This is why I don't listen to paid "reviewers". He is wanting something that the games are not and instead of reviewing them for what they are, he reviews them for what he wishes they were.

Which is why it's not necessarily a good method of reviewing a game. There's an infinite amount of things that could have or should be in a game. The main focus of any review should be what the game does right and what it doesn't, not what it may have been in it.

Yeah I want a more cut and dried approach I guess. This guy is mixing up his inner feelings of the direction he feels the industry should be moving with objectively reviewing a game.

If I were to review U2, I'd give it...9. Now that the "hype" period has cooled down, it's still a flipping amazing game, but I felt that the story wasn't done as well as U1. The characters were more realistic and the emotions
Elena grenade scene!
had me on the edge of my seat. However I would have liked to see more moments like that and not so obvious plot twists.

Everything else about U2 is superb, graphics, sound, animation, multiplayer*. It's just that hype period you have to watch out for(GTA4) and I think that some of the more experienced reviewers know that, hence the 6-9 scores. I mean take GOW3 for example, I am hyped beyond belief for it and will be there at midnight for my copy. But some reviews have already come in saying it's "more of the same" and while I said in my head(What about the titans and epicness?) I played the demo again and the collection to see that what they were saying has merit. It'll still be great and it doesn't need to change, but the problem with reviews I've come across re those that say "more of the same", "not innovative" etc and then go on to give other games which are for all intents and purposes, the same, better scores.

MW2 was very interesting last year with reviews.

Holy crap this guy perfectly explained why I never shared in the ridiculous acclaim Uncharted 2 got. The game really is quite good but I guess "good" just isn't enough for many people for whatever reason. If you think Uncharted 2 is amazing that's perfectly fine and all but attacking people for not liking the game enough?

Although I guess, to be fair, when you see 8.8 happen nothing about responses to review scores should be surprising anymore.
