Games where you've completely lost track of time.

Howdy!

Ultima Online in 2000

i would hop on around 7-8pm when my dad left for work and play until server restart at like 6 or 7am. There was 'server wars' right before restart because nothing saved so everyone just had a giant pvp battle. Best mmo ever made

If I'm playing fighting games with someone on a couch and they're as into them as I am, we can easily burn up two, three hours with zero knowledge of the passing of time. Hell, recently my daughter and I did 4 hours on the Marvel VS Capcom collection and the Capcom Vs SNK collection games, and honestly it went by like lightning.

MegaMan X games as well, they just don't really get old to me.

I should also mention how Bethesda games have a special way of taking me into a portal to another realm where the passage of time ceases to matter.... that is until I see the sun coming up outside.....such is why my wife finds it frustrating when I play those games nowadays, so I've kinda pulled away from them :/

Any games with buiding mechanics, i just try to finish what im building thinking it will take more 15 mins, and when i watch the clock 2h have passed by, especially if they are sandbox games. Some of these games i played in the past years are:

No Man's Sky
Connan Exiles
Sims 4
Car Mechanic Simulator
Farming Simulator
Dragon Quest Builders
and some more.

I also get lost in time when i play games that manage to imerse me like Elder Scrolls, Witcher, Cyberpunk, Persona, Yakuza, etc. But since these games have quests its easier to track time compared to more sandbox games where i just do whatever i want.

Any game where there's always a lot to do and which is mostly not very linear or is open world. Either it has some kind of crafting or base building or just a lot of small tasks. It always keeps you going, because of that dopamine I guess. Stuff like:

World of Warcraft
FFXIV
Satisfactory
Terraria
Death Stranding
Skyrim
Witcher 3
Elden Ring
Cyberpunk etc.

But also just LoL because you just want one more match and one more match and then bam it's 4 o clock in the night.

mostly jrpg

FF7 - 6 months to fully complete it back then
The Last Remnant - one entire year to complete all the sidequests and beat The Fallen

a ton more

+1 for Civilization. Call of Duty, also.
Another big one for me was Batman Arkham Asylum. I bought it used not long after it came out and accidentally did a marathon session and beat it that day/night.
I took it back the next day and got full credit that I put toward Fallout 3 based on a friend's recommendation. Then that was another one that I lost myself in. But for much longer than 1 day.

Most recently, this happened to me with Dune Awakening on two separate occasions.
On release weekend, I was playing with my friend in our two-man Guild, and checked the clock to see how close to midnight it was. It was 4am. The scary thing is that I could've kept playing if I didn't forced myself to go to bed.
Yesterday, we finally finished prepping for our big base renovation to the Harkonnen building set. Started playing at about 10:30am. At some point I figured it was close to lunchtime, so checked - only to see it was 3pm.

It hasn't happened for a long time before that. Most modern games think "immersion" means expensive cut-scenes... which just smack me in the face and remind me I'm playing a video game, so I'm checking my phone, my watch, etc. Dune Awakening just let me get lost in it. Magic.

I once played Pokemon Red until I heard birds chirping I thought to myself as I looked to my clock "Why the hell are birds chirping it's only.........5:40 am!?"

The worst however is The Sims nights will just vanish

First Elden Ring playthrough. I was already completely devoted to From and I did a damn good job on my media blackout. The descent into Siofra Well for the first time and pressing the map button could be the best gaming moment I've experienced. Game was a destroyer of weekends and workday sleep schedules.

Mass Effect Trilogy
Alien: Isolation
Red Dead Redemption
BF3 & 4
Returnal
Hades
Darktide
Hotline Miami
Oblivion
Remnant 2
Dead Cells
Inscryption
PGA Tour 2K25

Final Fantasy 6 for SNES. Before I knew it, it was 12pm at school and I had just gotten to WoR. Took a punishment for one of the greatest time sinks I ever knew as a kid.

I can easily lose hours without realising it, but the most extreme example was Perfect Dark and it was a group of us. We were playing against bots and didn't realise the time until kids were going to school outside.

Currently MH:World easily eats up time. Just one more hunt is an easy 20+ minutes gone.
