Games you "got" this year, but it's obvious you're the only one

I know... weird title. "Got" has a double conotation here. Games that you bought but no one seems to have bought or games that you just clicked with that no one else did.

Outlaw Golf 2 - I was a huge fan of the first and this one is even better. At $20, I still don't understand why it isn't a good seller. It's a hybrid game... those who want a golf sim will find a very solid golf engine and those who want a more arcadey/humorous experience will find the controls very user friendly. Bonus: XBL playable. Bottom Line: Buy it you cheap bastards

Better than: Mario Golf
As good as: Links 2004

Outrun 2 - A classic gets a supreme face lift. There were a very few vocal threads about it here on GAF, but really it was being hyped by a couple insane GAF members. The game just kicks ass plain and simple. The arcade portion of the game is really just a fraction of what the Xbox version has to offer. The Outrun Challenges are the meat of the game and will keep you occupied for many, many hours. For $40, this game should be in every Xbox owners library. Bonus: XBL Playable

Better than: PGR2
As good as: Burnout 3

Others that qualify...

Rocky Legends - multiplayer goodness, Rocky theme just psyches you up.
Blinx 2 - The Xbox joke, that's really quite fun.

Call of Duty: Finest Hour - You know what you're going to get, and it delivers IMO. It's nothing ground-breaking for a WWII FPS, but it does it well. Sound is fantastic, too.

i'm not the only one, but neo contra and advance guardian heroes don't get nearly enough love. that they got sixes and sevens in the media makes me wonder if i share any common ground with reviewers at all. the first viewtiful joe probably got too much love, but i'm perplexed that people are ignoring the sequel. i'll pick up the ps2 version as soon as it comes out.

edit: forgot blood will tell/dororo. it's great. and i think it sold about 3 copies. :/

my old impressions of these games:

neo contra: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=20294

blood will tell: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=16135

advance guardian heroes: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=14657

note my affection for the word "rocks."

I've bought Riddick, Fight Night, Pikmin 2, Paper Mario 2, and played through most of Ninja Gaiden. So I'd say no.

Around these parts, it's hard to think of something w/o a big following, but my big niche games of late:

Outrun 2
Technic Beat
Pirates!
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

I can more easily list games I DIDN'T "get":
GTA:San Andreas
Halo 2
Fable :D

Driv3r.

Its the same thing as GTA without the style, depth, soundtrack and character.

Both have the same flaws. Just with Driv3r they're turned up to 11.

Breakdown...I had more FUN with it that I did with GTA-VC. Highly underappreciated and it is one thing that most other games are not...original.

Richard Burns Rally - Most realistic rally game ever, yet it seems its too much for most people to hanlde. Its an absolute dream to drive with the 900 degree TFF.

I just finished the Russian part, and yeah, it does deliver, but it's too fast paced for my liking. Frontline worked better for me, more sneaking.

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury and Men of Valor both on XBox. While far from AAA status, they still have nuances that I find enjoyable and they are indeed fun to play. Better than that GoldenEye: Rogue Agent rubbish....

:lol I'm the opposite -- I absolutely love the fast pace of the game. :)

Hey, I'm not calling it GOTY, I'm just saying that for all intents and purposes when you're in a car running a mission, they're not all that different and offer (to a certain extent) similar experiences. Satisfaction levels on the other hand....

I've got a couple..

Kururin Squash (GC)

Kuru Kuru Kururin seems to get plenty of love in those weekly "Tell me a good GBA game to get!" threads, so I can't understand at all why nobody (literally - did anyone other than me buy this game?) seemed to care about this release. It takes everything that was great about the portable games and, Drill Land style, expands upon it with several unique gameplay spinoffs based on the core game mechanic. The result is tons of classic Kururin levels, many more new levels based around the flamethrower, punchy-glove, tornado, underwater paddle, and machine gun Kururin sticks, and a few dozen super-addictive time trials. Oh, there are also about a billion items to unlock ranging from different stick styles to video play-throughs of every level and even a fun GBA connectivity mini-game. I haven't even come close to unlocking everything yet, and if the GBA games are any indication there's most likely an awesome set of super-challenging "EX" levels waiting for me if or when I 'perfect' every level.

The multiplayer is very cool as well. A few friends were just in town for Thanksgiving, and we decided to pop in Kururin to see what the multi was like. We weren't expecting much, but figured it'd make for a little dumb battle-mini-game fun. We ended up playing the battle mode alone for hours on end before moving on to the race mode, which we played for another couple of hours. It's really fun stuff, surprisingly well thought-out and balanced, not to mention hilarious.

It's hard to find any real flaws in the game, but if I had to, I'd say that some people will probably find the graphics a bit rudimentary. Of course, this is an action-puzzle game, so that doesn't matter much. Also, it's sad to see that the great mini-games from Kururin Paradise, like the "lawnmower" game, weren't included. Still, for 3800 yen (I think my copy cost me a whopping $35) this game is a really awesome little package.

I imagine GAFers will start discovering it 2 years from now, and will wonder aloud why nobody ever told them the game was so fun. I will weep.

I really liked Ribbit King (GC, PS2) also.

Before it came out, I was hyped up about the game in a sort of silly way. I wanted to play it, but figured it wouldn't be so great as an actual game. After playing a round or two of the import, my suspicions were pretty much confirmed. At that point, I agreed with the majority of the reviews and GAF impressions - the game seemed almost random, you just hit your frog and hope for the best. After buying the US version and putting a little more time into it, I found that the game really opens up and becomes much more strategic and worthwhile after you get through the first couple of rounds. Once I learned each course better and better, I found myself able to pull off huge chain reactions - and ones that successfully dicked over my opponents, at that - intentionally. The further I got into the game, the more fun it became. All in all I put about 20 or so hours into the game, unlocking everything and finishing off all of the opponents, which was way more than I thought I'd play when I plunked down the $15 for my copy. It never reached obscene levels of difficulty or delivered AAA amounts of fun, but it was much better than people made it out to be and was absolutely worth 15 bucks.

Kinda funny that several of my favorite games this year (Katamari and Technic Beat go without saying) were budget releases!

Blinx 2 is pretty decent. Big improvement over original. But in a shocking Raidenesque / Arbitor twist...
YOU DON'T PLAY AS BLINX! BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Favourite game that got ignored of late was Haunted Mansion this time last year - terrific little game that unfortuantly suffered the taint of a crap Disney licence.

I got both Outlaw Golf 2 and Viewtiful 2 Joe. OG2 absolutely rocks and is the best golf game released this generation in my eyes. VJ2 really is more of the same, but that's a good thing in this case. :)

Outrun 2 is being put on "hold" until I can import the Japanese version, which releases next year and will have more tracks and cars. BOOOOO to you, Sega. :P

I guess my pick for a game not yet listed here would be Kingdom Under Fire. It's as if people just forgot the game came out at all.

Yah, I totally forgot about KUF. Musashi was pimping it for a while... I'll have to pick that game up.

games ive played this year that sold craptastically

psi ops mindgate conspiracy- very good, worth 19.99 or a rental, short sweet gameplay

galleon- below average, good gameplay enviroments but awkward frustrating controls

mxunleashed- good game

Galleon - Awesome game with phantastic controls, but not up to date technics and too many graphics whores out there.

VIRAL MARKETTING BEWARE

:lol

It's actually worth checking out?

Astro Boy: Omega Factor. It did get some good reviews, but a lot of people, even the hardcore 2D action types, will still completely ignore it.

*shrug* I bought it (JP ver, will probably get US ver eventually). Beat it. Several times. Didn't care for it. Maybe it's good for a release this year, but that's not saying a whole lot.

It definitively is! You just have to get used to the controls and you will feel one with the game! It never happened before (or afterwards) that a game controlled that perfectly. You can do a 10 meters jump and land on a pole standing in the middle of a ditch. It's amazing how well the controls work after a bit of practice.

Actually, KUF did quite well in it's 1st month(around 50,000 copies) when you consider the game didn't have any marketing behind it.

It's not for everyone. But I have heard that the US version is significantly better than the JP version.

This is one of those games... The demo did what a demo is designed to do. It sold me on the game. I like the genre and I liked the controls and abilities of the character. But retailers got limited copies so when I went to buy it, none were available. Then there was some backlash here on GAF and no of it was do to graphics. IIRC, everyone was very forigiving on the graphics because we knew the development history. Ultimately, the game fell apart in the story and environments. I think boss battles were shat as well.

There should have been more substance to the game.

Are you talking about the PS2 game? I'm pretty sure they were discussing the GBA version.

I actually really like the controls in Galleon as well. It's quite fun to mess around in some of the environments just to see how Rhama tackles the obstacles. Actually, the controls aren't really much different from the 3D Zeldas.

Unfortunately, the game does look extremely dated which makes it difficult to keep playing given my tendency towards graphical whorism.

I don't agree here. There were only two things that kind of sucked: the third level and the final boss battle.

I stopped playing when i reached that castle level .The combat bit is the problem. The platforming & climbing bits are cool though .

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person here with Black/Matrix 00 and DJBox.

bm00 - 300 hours later, I can say it's a better game in the series than bm2(PS2) at least.
djbox - I could spend hours on this if I were to just sit down with two songs and screw with all the options.
