Games You Were 100% Wrong About

I actually had high hopes for Balan Wonderworld. Thank goodness there was a demo I eagerly downloaded.

One of the few times a demo prevented people from buying the game. Whose brilliant idea was it to release it?

Witcher 2 and 3. I tried Witcher 2 back in the day and couldn't get into it, then tried Witcher 3 because everyone raved about it. Again, same story, just could not get into it. Everyone calling it one of the best RPG's ever finally got to me and I forced myself to push through Witcher 2, ended up loving it, and then went immediately into Witcher 3. Sometimes it takes a while for a game to click.....

AC: Odyssey was the same, was not hyped at all but started playing and got sucked in. Ended up being a hugely fun time sink.

I also put way more time in Crackdown 3 than would be warranted by most. Stupid story, but so much mindless fun. Still never beat it though so it isn't exactly the same as the rest of this list.

Looking at this thread it looks like I need to go back and force myself play through Nier:Automata, Sekiro, and Death Stranding. All games I've started but just didn't get hooked on and quit playing.

Darksiders 3: Was initially disappointed in how much of a departure it was from previous Darksiders and stopped playing. Tried again months later after getting an OLED tv and wanting something to really show it off and not only did it fit the bill it hooked me real bad. Loved Gunfire Games ever since.

The Helicopter and Balteus enraged me to no end in Armored Core 6. I didn't think I'd get through the game even once. I thought I might drop it. Then getting to act 4's boss and just barely scraping by a win, I thought there is no way I'm doing this again. NG+ just isn't for me. But then I beat NG+ and NG++. Got all the endings.

The Male Lewinsky
Control. Looked absolutely ridiculous from the screenshots. Some bird levitating shooting rainbows? No thanks.
Tried it on PSN plus and was hooked after 5 minutes.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
Bear with me.

OG Final Fantasy VII.

I thought the whole game was running round Midgar. Then I got out onto the world map and. Well… I was blown away.

Remember I’d never played a game like it before.

I stand corrected. But that poster somehow dodged that bullet. They have legitimately taken every waking moment since FF16 was announced to cut into that game. They bashed it pre release and post release, and now we are in a “what game were you wrong about” thread and he’s bashing with no context when he was bashing before release too. No context and not saying they feel any different about it.
Or, you know, ignore the troll and get over it. I liked FFXVI myself, and yet I don't give one ounce of fuck what people say about it. Ignore them and move on. You bringing it up is more annoying than the haters.

Due to complete arrogance, I didn't play Final Fantasy 7 (Original) for a very long time.

Every time that game came up, I would always dismiss it as "overrated-nostalgia-glasses porn". And I was already predisposed to disliking it, due to it being a JRPG (A genre I hated at the time).
I was so tired of seeing it listed as literally the greatest game ever made, in every list of the sort, and it's fans are just as obnoxious about it. They never shut up about it... And the word "Nostalgia" ALWAYS comes up when they are praising it.

But when I got around to playing it, in 2021, I couldn't be happier to admit my stupid, airheaded dismissal of the game.

Do I think it's the greatest game ever made? No, because these days I don't believe such a thing exists. It's all subjective and always will be.

But it's deserving of the hype, 100%.

Resident Evil VII.
The first half is one of the best games in the series.
Then you hit the ship and it turns into one of the worst games in the series.

Everyone kept hailing it as the "return to form" for the series. Miss me with that shit. Revelations was the true rebirth of the franchise and it's a much better game.
It's also why I haven't played (and probably won't play) Village.
Hard to disagree here. And Resi 8 is easily the most over hyped and over rated game I have EVER played! Not saying it's shit but god DAMN, it's nowhere near the level of previous Resi games. 7 was, as you said, great in the 1st half then completely fell away 2nd half. Never been more disappointed in a game as I was playing Resi 7, especially after all the hype.

Recent Call of duty games. Specifically the campaigns.

I stepped away from the series many years ago as I felt it was the getting same ol same old every year. But played ww2 recently and the story was alright. Just completed black ops cold war today and it was quite enjoyable.

Have Modern Warfare 2019 installing and downloading now... seriously is there anything burned on that disk?!

Oh also for some reason, growing up and for many years I thought Metal Gear was just this sort of "grounded" military stealth game with a standard military story. So it never appealed to me as I was more into fantasy and Sci Fi.

It wasn't until much later that I found out it had stuff like big robots, cyborg ninjas, mind reading freaks, a fat guy on roller skates, a vampire, etc. I actually only played through MGS1-3 for the first time with the HD collection-

I thought Hardspace: Ship Breaker would be my absolute jam before I played it. Turns out it just wasn't for me. I get why some people love it, but it just didn't click.

This is the other reason I love Gamepass, there have been a whole bunch of games I tried that I'm glad I didn't pay full price for.

Guardians of the Galaxy for me. Really didn't care for it at all due to the Avenger's fiasco a year earlier and because of all the pre-launch gameplay videos being boring af. Gave it a try when it went on sale during the BF PSN sale in 2021 and oh boy was it worth it! Great writing coupled with very good chemistry and acting from the main cast of Guardians. Oh and the soundtrack is an all time great too! In any case, I dare to say that I enjoyed this particular rendition of these iconic characters more than the ones in the GotG movies. I liked it so much that I even bought it twice (first digitally then physically).

Breath of the wild: for the first 40 hours prior to entering a divine beast I legitimately thought it was one of the greatest games ever made. Then seeing how lame the dragons were and how bad the divine beast was I started to realize I had seen everything the game was going to offer, the repetitive cut/paste approach to filling the world, and that there was never going to be a worthwhile payoff to anything. That gets driven home with extreme clarity at the godawful final boss and ending and now I can't stand the game at all.

Eyeshield 21 for the PS2:
played it on a whim, hadn't even seen the show, and I just couldn't get into it. The anime card/football hybrid nature seemed novel but not particularly interesting. Coming back to it after getting into show I just decided to really sit and learn the game. It ended up being so deep, engaging, and authentic to the show that it ended up eating a whole year of my life. For what was just another licensed anime game in a sea of such things Konami really put some love and effort into it.

Death Stranding: I mean if you know, you know.

Red Dead Redemption 2. I thought it was going to be as fun as RDR1 (one of my favourite games of all time).

It was not. It shovelled realistic immersion down your throat till you didnt know which of the myriad of systems to spend time on and then shat it all out with basic realism crushers like legendary pelts magically appearing after you lose them and legendary Beasts having real trouble killing you making them not so legendary.

Resident Evil 4: When I first played this, I thought it was a mediocre action game with shit controls but I stuck with it and it became one of my favourite games in the series.

Ace Combat 5: My brother actually bought this and I slagged him off for it. I told him 'why did you buy this shite for?' because I never really liked flying games that much in the past. Read the back of the box and thought 'may as well give it a go' and played it for a bit. Now it would be my choice if I could only one PS2 game forever and I bought Ace Combat 4 and 0 soon after and I'm now a huge fan of the series. Never would have thought that when my brother brought it home that day. (On a side note, I wish they didn't give it a shitty name in Europe. I mean Ace Combat: Squadron Leader? Come on guys....)

Sonic 3d: I wanted this game so bad as a kid. When I finally played it, it turned out to be a bit piece of shit. So disappointed.

Final Fantasy 9: Didn't click with me the first time I played it and I stopped about 1/3 through Disc 2. Picked it up again years later and I loved it.

The game I was most hyped about that ended up being the biggest let down for me was Brink. Runner up is Two Worlds.

Since those two games I've learned to temper my expectations and I'm rarely wrong about games anymore....as far as they pertain to my own personal tastes.

As far as games I didn't plan to really play, or ended up playing after thinking they'd be trash and ending up being pleasantly surprised? Or the inverse....

I thought Ninja Gaiden 3 was going to be amazing, with PVP and everything. Hot Garbo.
I was super hyped for Final Fantasy XIII...utter trash.
Thought Assassin's Creed Valhalla would be good....wrong.
Played Hollow Knight on a whim, not thinking much of the game...ended up being one of my favorite metoridvanias.

There's probably some more in the recesses of my memory. That's it for now though

SOMA. Played it for about an hour and didn't like the supposed horror theme gameplay. After skimming over people's high recommendations of it for a while, gave it another shot (it had been sitting on my hdd for like 2 years). Still without knowing what the game was about, gave it another shot. I binge played it and it literally changed my life. What an insane sci-fi story, it's not horror. The existential implications of what awaits us in the future...

Witcher 3

Always been more of a modern day/sci fi future setting guy and being the third game I didn’t think I would take to it or find it tough to take to the characters.

Wow was I wrong. Brilliant game.

Mirrors Edge . Thought it would give me motion sickness and not being a huge first person guy it would be one to avoid. Tried the demo out of boredom, glad I did, loved it especially the soundtrack.

Warhawk PS3. Initial thoughts were of a very average third person multiplayer. Stuck with it and loved it particularly the modes like Zones with larger maps. For me it was one of the best times I had in online gaming throughout that generation and i wish it would be given the remaster treatment for PS5.

Tried Yakuza 3 and 4 when I was about 15, bounced off quickly because my english wasn't quiet good enough to understand the story and the gameplay felt dated and slow. Jumped in again at 25 with Yakuza 6 and 0 afterwards and had a lot of fun. Since then I've completed most mainline games and look forward to new ones.

I always hated the looks from Jackie Chan StuntMaster. Played the game and eated a truck full of crows. Loved the game and I even play it to this very day.

Trails of Cold Steel - thought it would be some generic, forgettable JRPG. Turned out to be an amazing series with incredible world building and really fun turn-based combat. Now my second favorite JRPG series behind Persona.
I've been wanting to get in to the trials games where should I start. I have CS 1/2 atm

Red dead redemption 1 - I thought it was gonna be boring and a friend told me just fucking play it so I did... Yeah I was wrong, one of my all time fav games ever

FF16 - after the demo I was hyped and thinking the game was going to be great.Wrong!
Terrible frame rate, motion blur that made me have motion sickness.
The motion blur FINALLY got removed, but the frame rate is still as awful like the story. WORST FF game and it's not even close. I had more fun with ff13 1/2/3.

Yakzua like a dragon - Haven't been able to get into any Yakuza games, but I've been playing this one last week on chapter 4 now and loving it. I wanna get into teh otehr games now even though they're beat em ups and have no dubs sadly

BOTW - took me about 3 tries to finally get into the game and it clicked for me. Loved it and loved it even more when I played it again on PC with weapon breaking turned off (how it should be)

Hades - Loved all their previous games was hyped for it anddddd couldn't get into it. I really don't like roguelites it seems

Since modern era of gaming where so much info is available to you as a player if you are willing to look for it (or lack of signaling a disaster incoming) i haven't had that happen to me for many years.

I do remember being completely wrong about arkham asylum back then however, I remember my brother bringing it back from uni and I started it on a whim and literally finished it 100% in a few sittings.

Another example (again being younger and also having less info given to the public about a game) was motherfucking Haze, a game by the timesplitters guys that was all hyped up to be the next big thing. Then me and a mate played the campaign one weekend after a rugby tour and we were like "this is fun right?" Trying to convince ourselves it was good

Yakuza 0 - Took me about 3 restarts before I put some time into it. Glad I did because I think it's fantastic and possibly one of the most entertaining games ever made imo.

Tears of the Kingdom - High expectations, naturally. 70 hours in and I dropped it because it's actually incredibly dull. Shocked that this game got a pass from the gaming community for being what amounts to a glorified DLC.

FFXVI - I will never trust a demo or twitter again.

Dragon's Dogma.
I thought it at first a lame attempt to capitalize in the success of Demon's Souls that came before.
Even in it's unfinished state, it was an insane attempt for the ultimate Fantasy Rpg.

Yakuza games.
It might be because of the bad advertising in the west comparing it to GTA. It certainly was because of the name in the West "Yakuza" as everyone hates those people.
I didn't discover it until 0.

my #1? l.a. noire! first playthrough? sooo disappointed. second playthrough? i almost immediately realized that i was playing one of the most (inadvertently?) hilarious games ever made. non-stop, over-the-top naked gun style madness. the perfect, schizophrenic protagonist. the extraordinary, despicable supporting cast (special props to rusty, of course). the whacked-out psychologist. the seductive club singer. the indescribably looney interrogations. the spinning headlines. all of it just so fucking perfect! & all of it in this wonderful re-creation of maybe my favorite place to visit when i get my time machine: '40's/'50's l.a...

i admit it - when i'm wrong, i can be really wrong...
Somehow i still have to play that fucking game...

Is the main plot\mistery any good?

Sadly Sekiro. I understand it's a great game but I just couldn't gel with it in any way. And it's not a question of difficulty. Armored Core 6 is harder and has far more complex combat but that one got me hooked.
What? The opposite maybe...

Ac6 It has like what? 4 hard boss battles and then you can cakewalk for the entire game.

Sekiro has a lot of hard moments even during the normal exploration.

I can certainly drastically change my mind, but that does not necessarily make anything before a "wrong" impression.

I guess both MGS Collection and Hitman took some time to get into.
In the case of MGS I paused some months/years, after the first minutes felt appaling and I hated the seemingly awkward controls. Tried it another time with more drive and after finishing 2, I also played immediately 3 which I probably liked even more.
Hitman Contracts did not make me pause, but in the first hour or so, I could have thrown countless of controllers at the wall and I would have called it a crappy kinda unfinished game. The glitchiness of the very first level is something else, not getting that right is a massive blunder. And while it is janky af, and objectively probably still somewhat a crappy games, it is also fun and unique when something works.
And recently Deathloop. I did not get it at all when I got my PS5. And while I think there are massive design problems and all the good stuff is way too well hidden for some inexplicable reason, which makes it in its core still kinda badly thought out, I learned to appreciate what it is. Much freedom and actual replayability, very good at being gamey but stupid unlikable uninteresting characters and nonsensical disappointing pointless story, which is just something I care a lot.

I felt wronged in trusting others' praise with some games.
Half Life 1, Bioshock (1 and Infinite), Yakuza Zero, SotC, Doom2016, F-Zero (SNES and also GX) and probably others. Those felt okayish at best and some kinda actually bad.

If you already own CS1-2, you can definitely start with them. I would, however, recommend playing the Sky and Crossbell games prior to CS3 (if you can). It will definitely enrich your experience going into CS3-4 and Reverie.

oh, man - it's genuinely legit, & worthy of a good post-war era movie. never mind all the side-stories: sleazy land developers (a la the 2 jakes), deeply twisted serial killers, decadent hollywood hijinx - basically, the whole noir enchilda. i really recommend it. it's an inspired, unique creation that deserves to be experienced... tho not necessarily taken seriously...

FF7R . . . I never cared about a FF game before and I played the demo and thought it would be too turn base-ish and you'd have to do a ton of nerdy skill tree and materia stuff.
But after I played and fully enjoyed FF16, I figured I could handle the nerdier stuff and slower turn based aspects in FF7R this time around.
So I'm playing it now to finish it before the next installment.

My main gripe is that I wish it went goofier like a Yakuza game. But I'm only on chapter 10 so far so i'll see.

Some hundred hours laters I can only say that I was wrong. Probably my favorite game of the last generation. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Did you play Sekiro to the end? Because I platinumed both, and I can say with certainty that Sekiro is the harder game of the two. Actually, in my opinion Sekiro is the hardest fromsoft game to date, since there's no way to cheese encounters the way you can in their other games.

If you didn't get to the end, give the game another try. It may take a while to click since it asks you to play differently from other fromsoft games, but once it does, it's amazing.
