GameSpot DS vs. PSP

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

So Which One?

Both systems are game machines, but there's no denying you can use them for other applications. The PSP truly has a leg up on the DS in terms of secondary features. The PSP's UMDs allow for on-the-go movie-watching, its built-in browser can use an Internet connection to decent effect, and the Memory Stick expansion slot makes the system a playback device for videos, pictures, and music. The DS, on the other hand, is quite limited in terms of extracurricular activities. Nintendo has a not-yet-released Play Yan peripheral that can add video-playback capabilities to the system, but the DS's low screen resolution is a far cry from the image quality that the PSP provides. If you're looking for a jack-of-all-trades portable device, the PSP is the better bet.

When it comes to style, there's no arguing the PSP's good looks. The DS looks like a Frankensteinian Speak n Spell compared to the glossy curves of the PSP. If appearances were the only concern, the DS would have died an untimely death sometime around March. Nintendo is putting more effort into style, if the Game Boy Micro and Revolution are any indication. Given the fact that Nintendo has redesigned the Game Boy Advance countless times, we're betting that we'll have a better looking DS system soon enough.

To say that one system is clearly better than the other would be flat-out wrong. Both systems come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you're after innovative games that you can't find anywhere else, the DS would suit you well, not to mention save you a bundle of cash. The PSP has raw graphical power in the form of a beautiful screen and a powerhouse of a processor, but it comes at twice the cost of a Nintendo DS. The great screen is perfect for watching TV shows or catching a movie while on the go. And if that weren't enough, the PSP can double as an MP3 player, image viewer, and even more. While the PSP does have an equivalent number of solid games, it doesn't have nearly as many of the exclusive must-have titles that the DS has. It all depends on what you're looking for, as both systems offer very compelling arguments for your dollars.
Such a nice take on the subject imo. :D

PSP isn't dead, but it's for more then gaming, they both offer what was promised and neither have had many short-comings this far. The future looks bright for both depending on what want out of them. No one handheld future!

P.S. Sorry if old.

If Play-yan isn't release yet, then how do I have two versions of the device? Huh? Tell me motherfucking GAMESPOT!

Edit: This article is fluff. By that I mean pussy bullshit. I don't care if I am coming off as incredibly one-sided but DS is owning the PSP library as of late.

In September, October, and November, 27 PSP games hit store shelves, eight of which scored higher than an 8.0 on GameSpot. This sudden torrent of good games put the DS and the PSP on even ground.

*cough*

You know...
Well, okay, I'll grant them that statement. But if you're after really high-quality innovative games that you can't find anywhere else, that's another story. I really think titles like Kirby CC and Nintendogs are highly overrated and that the vast majority of the DS' awesomeness comes from the more traditional stuff, namely Advance Wars, Mario Kart, Mario 64, Castlevania, Animal Crossing, Mario and Luigi, Sonic Rush...
I mean, yeah, games like Castlevania, Mario Kart, and Metroid Prime Pinball (and I do include that in the "awesomeness" category too) benefit from the two screens, but I don't think it's fair to call that innovation since it could technically be done with one big vertical screen. Even Phoenix Wright is mostly a remake of a GBA game that never came stateside. Other than Meteos, which is fantastic, I'm at a loss to think of a top-tier DS game that makes use of the system's capabilities to the fullest.

At least they can see that much.

The DS game lineup certainly has been great lately, but it certainly ain't due to no innovation (like all those games Jiggy37). I think the weak hardware is actually helping the DS somewhat. It's forcing developers to create new games rather than port console titles.

Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan.

I like my DS for both tradional and innovative gameplay styles.

I'm so damn tired of this. Even if they don't completely drive all games they pretty much always enhance them. Even if it's just a seperate map screen or blowing up balloons in mario kart. Heck, the touchscreen is worth it even just for navigating menus or swtch map view in mario kart by hitting it anywhere.

I love my DS. It's a fucking great system.
There's no denying tho that I'd love to have a psp as well. However, there is no way I'll be dropping that kind of cash on a handheld anytime soon. If anything, I'll be getting a 360 if I'm gonna spend that much on gaming.

They are right; neither system is really better than the other. Mario Kart DS might be fun but I had lots and lots of fun playing Ridge Racer on PSP. Most of the best games for DS were ones I hated like Phoenix Wright. I was bored of my skull playing Advance Wars and I usually enjoy SRPGs.

In my opinion, neither are really that great...yet.

I bothered to read that article. What a steaming pile of shit it was. Especially the fake fight with DS and PSP. Jesus Christ. I felt embarrassed to be a gamer.

:lol nice ad for the PSP just to say in the last sentence... "if playing games are your thing go for a DS"

blowing up balloons in mario kart.

I HATE this aspect of mario kart. Half the time I end up spitting on the screen. I guess I'm pretty bad at blowing even tho I'm the official forum cocksucker and all.

Just make sure to stand still and not make any noises.... just.... you know... blow :)

I like how they mentioned the multimedia features of the PSP in two different portions of the article.

Whoever wrote that article definitely got some moneyhats from Sony.

Right guys?! :D

Nope, it's a fair and unbiased article. Anyone who says other is clearly biased themselves.

this war is tiresome. I think the DS has more good games, but the best games on PSP are better. I find myself playing both about equally, maybe the PSP a bit more because the aforementioned best games and multimedia capabilities, but basically I switch them by the week or whatever game I'm carrying around.

If your brain was smart enough you would understand what they mean.

Since you can't I'll explain it for you in simple terms. Can Play-yan be purchased at your local Best Buy or Wal-mart? Does it by any chance come bundled with a DS? No and therefore the average consumer is never going to reach it and take advantage of it.

Got it?

There is so much false information and spin in that article that GAF should be proud of this fine piece of work.
Just like every post of yours, doesn't that make you proud?

This is exactly what i think, so far the DS has more appealing games, but nothing i have played so far(yep fellas that includes Phoenix Wright and DoS) compares to experience i had playing Lumines or MGA.

QFT, the article pretty much painted the best picture of the situation now. Of course those that are biased are going to say its off one way or the other.
