• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

gamespot looks kinda like classic 1up.com now

It still looks about the same as it did for the last few months. What's dramatically changed about it?

I saw it too. I went there earlier today and everything was different. I went there a couple of minutes ago and it reverted to how it was before.

the new one looked ok to me but it wasnt up very long, it was up long enough for me to notice a few bugs tho.

Yeah, there was a "the final word" box with the text outside of it.

Loads up just fine in Firefox for me. That said, it looks pretty much the same as always to me as well. There may have been some tweaking, but I don't see a redesign here.

Here's the normal style--the one I saw up for a few minutes was silver on both sides with a teal on the inside, much different layout with more blank space. It looked a whole lot like classic 1up--but as others have said, it's reverted. Not sure why.

Looks new to me. Only slightly though. Good to know that the website still has its fair share of bugs though. It tells me to "stop monkeying around" when I click on the Far Cry Instincts video review. :lol

EDIT: And now when I went back, it had reverted to the old style.

I'm looking at it now. I think I like it better than the old design. And in any case it's still waaay better than the mess that is IGN.

I see it now. At least in Firefox it's totally fucked. Way too vertical, with shit-tons of wasted space on each side. Trying to view it in IE to see if it's any better there.

Edit - Nope. Total ass in IE too.

The redesign is in transit right at this moment. We're working through a lot of issues so anything that doesn't seem right (quick, someone mention the Metal Gear Solid 3 review score) will soon be fixed. Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience. The reason you might still be seeing the old site is because the new one's not yet propogated to all our servers.

I like the new design a lot. Its a lot cleaner, and nav seems a lot more logically laid out, to boot. Sucks they didn't make the jump to 1024 though... I thought for sure they would.

Also, a BIG :lol :lol :lol for their final poll choice.

Of course, I can't access either the DS or GBA sections both are blank. Didn't check the other system sections.

I think the grey sidebars are ugly.

Simple reasoning behind is that the VAST majority of people who visit GameSpot still use 800x600 (yeah, I know...hard to believe) and 1024x768...it would be improper to just shut those 800x600 users out...

I think about how I will go to like a relatives place or a friends place who has a "family computer" and when I see it, I go blind by all the big text on it...because they do in fact always seem to use 800x600...ugh.

Here's our official response. :-p

Q: Why aren't you moving to a wider page width?

A: In the interest of presenting you with clean-looking pages, and not alienating the majority of our audience that browses at resolutions of 1024x768 or less, we chose not to change the dimensions of our pages. However, by replacing the left-hand nav bar found on most GameSpot pages with our new horizontally oriented navigation, we've effectively created more room for content.

i dunno how, but dave you just got me thinking of a really killer webpage idea. Now I'm going to incorporate it into my upcoming design =]

I'm seeing the new one, although I got a 404 the first time and had to refresh.. and it loaded super slow. In other related news.. my firefox still has trouble browsing the gamespot. :\

Even though Im currently viewing the internet on a laptop with widescreen, I agree. At home I always use 800x600. Yeah, my vision isnt so good, but the rest of my family likes that resolution as well.

The site still has bugs, I was browsing and I suddenly started exploring the old design for some reason, including the evn older N64/DC?GBC pages.

Actually, what bothers me most, Dave, is that Ive seen you post more at GAF then GS over the past month....

to the gamespot guys- I like where your going with this but it looks like it needs a bit more testing before its uploaded 100%, isn't there a temporary URL you guys could use to work the bugs out prior to throwing it on gamespot.com ? It also says Ihave 2 messages but I have none, I'll assume again its the transition faze. I think Kasavin said in a quickie article over the weekend that this'll take all week so hopefullyits all up and good by friday.

Actually no, the new design is better.. Couple things:

- I like how there's no more cluttered lefthand menu. That was horrible.
- I haven't been able to load the PS3 or X360 pages yet, but I hope you guys use a different shade of green for X360 and a different shade of blue for PS3. (Just a nitpick, but I like when sites do color-coded pages for systems. And purple for DS sucks, it's already used for GC and GBA. (Copy EB.com's colors. :P)
- A redesign of the GameSpot logo might do some good. It kind of pops out in a weird way next to the system names, and speaking of, pleasssssse don't keep them lowercase. It looks less professional.
- It matches the other sites better, like TV.com. Of course TV.com still has plenty of layout problems and.. other problems. heh.
- The uh, Browse All Reviews link on the GameCube reviews section doesn't work yet.. shows me no results. But the new Review page setup is nice.
- The bar at the top with the Search/Backround Color options takes up some pointless room near the top. Move the Search somewhere else and put the background color thing somewhere like.. to the left of the Prefs link at the top when you're logged in.

That's mainly just some nitpicky stuff. Nothing big. But whatever.

The site looks better, but it does still look pretty cluttered.

You'd think we'd be better about something like this, having done it something like six times in nine years (not to take away from the intended impact of this particular revision, which makes a lot of key improvements). But yeah, the transition process is difficult to predict when the site has this many pages and so much data drawing from different pools. Not to get into too much detail, but there's been plenty of testing, yet it doesn't entirely account for when the rubber meets the road.

But all that sounds like a bunch of excuses. It's a good thing we're not in the business of launching space shuttles. At any rate, it'll all be much better soon and once things settle down I'm confident you'll think the new site is a lot better than the old site overall.
