Gamespot's Overall Game of the Year is...

This PC thing everyone's talking about... I should give some of their games a try.

one site which may or may not be biased will now run your decisions about starting pc gaming? give me a break. WOW is good but not the be all end all =).

there isn't a high standard of quality for the MMORPG genre. When garbage like DAOC (no content, very shallow, empty) is considered a great MMORPG you just know the whole genre is lacking something.

That isn't to say the genre doesnt have a lot of potential. We need to see more features put into these games. More depth and interactivity.

They gave World of Warcraft a 9.5
They gave GTA:SA a 9.6

There goes the theory that their awards are based strictly on the scores.

Ok do any of you whiners have any idea what you're talking about? Have you played WoW for a decent amount of time? I think this is an awesome choice got GOTY.

It's not my best game this year, but it's definitely worthy of recognition.

I don't think Burnout 3 deserves to be in that list either.

Relax dude, I was kidding.

I've played multiple King's/Space/Police Quests and SCUMM adventures; tons of stuff from Meier, Molyneux and Garriott; Dooms, Quakes, and Unreals; and Craft RTS games both of the War and Star variety.

gamespot proves their idiocy more and more every day. this has not been a good week for them :lol they are quickly becoming the joke of the internet for the gaming community. IGN looks like wise old geniuses compared to them, and that's saying something. :lol

But aren't the reviews scored by just one person, where as the Game of the Year is a "team decision"

Man whatever,I played the shit for about a month,it was definitely the best MMORPG I've played, but in no way was it GOTY. :P

While I disagree with their choice (GTA:SA or MGS3 deserved it), I'm glad they didn't award Halo 2 GOTY. Actually, it's a courageous choice, if you think about it. This is an MMORPG, not exactly the most accessible or marketable type of game, so Gamespot didn't fall to popularity or hype. I respect that.

Your Halo 2 trolling is older than my granny's panties....... And she has been dead for years.

haha, he does have a hard-on about Halo.

Warcraft is a really great game. It wouldn't take my vote either but...it could be worse.

1-Gamespot survey the polls and their forums to know which game their members prefered this year
2-GTA? Halo 2? MGS3? too predictable
3- ?
4- Profit

I'm personally not that upset that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater didn't make their list. I don't think it's an experience that everyone deserves to have, though they should. It's like the finest cocaine (I don't condone drug use). I'm so jaded that it didn't sell well.

/me sighs

Good pick.

"While I disagree with their choice (GTA:SA or MGS3 deserved it), I'm glad they didn't award Halo 2 GOTY."

Why do you give a damn? And why must you express it like a viral marketer on these boards?

WoW is my personal choice for GotY 2004...and stands a good chance of being GotY 2005 as well. ;) It is courageous to give it to an MMORPG, especially since these games tend to launch with a lot of bugs, which is fairly unavoidable for something of this scope. Plus, publications are nervous about judging a game which is really just beginning at launch.

Every other MMO I've played seems like trash compared to this game now.

Is MGS3 REALLY that good?! Say nothing to me because... I HOPE that come Christmas day I feel exactly the same way I always do when a MGS comes out:

:o

My personal GOTY is WoW as well. I've spent near 150 hours in WoW, of which maybe 5 of those hours were spent bored. That's fucking brilliant design right there.

Gamespot gets my respect. Not so much because they're choice is the same as mine, but because they've got some balls naming an MMO for GOTY. :lol

Hell yeah... i wasn't expect that. I was thinking GTA:SA would grab it for sure.

Why with all the hate?

I'd love to pick up WoW, haven't played it myself, and from all the impressions I see it seems worthy of the crown, I just know it would take over my life if I were to pick it up, so I haven't.

Try finding WoW retail this holiday season. Still haven't seen it yet and I've been everywhere these past few days.

But I have mine... so I dun care.

:O

Eh. It's a great game, but giving any freshly launched MMO a GoTY is just fuckin' stupid in my book.

Better than most of the alternatives, however.

How could anybody really pick out a GOTY this year?
I mean we have had at least like 7 games of supreme goodness in wildly different genres.

I'm seriously sorry that I didn't get it... NOW.

Funny, it's like now that I'm playing the game I'm interested in all of that shit that comes extra and whatnot. Prior... I couldn't really give a shit less.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection will have to suffice as my ONLY collectors edition doodad of the Holiday Season.

Agreed, game is fun, but it's also very damn buggy and imbalanced at this point. Very poor decision in respect to some of the other games on the list. Where the hell is MGS3 on this list? O.o The omission alone deserves a big WTF.

Greg Kasavin is crooked. I don't see how he can give WoW "graphics" a 9, but give FFXI's an 8. Both have excellent art direction but I think it's clear which one looks better than the other. The point is he seems biased.
