Metaphor: ReFantazio Is GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2024

A see critics praise the covering of prejudice etc in the game quite often, but a lot of those topics are pretty surface level, and the game never really provides any solutions or anything.

Haters just mad cuz it don't have their teenage waifus.
I mean, it kind of does though?

Really enjoyed it. First half to 2/3 were some of the most fun I've had in a JRPG. It really wore out its welcome for me by the end though. Most of the mystery of the story was gone, the side quest dungeons are all recycled, and the job system sort of forces you to make certain choices to have a viable end game party. The game sort of doesn't respect your time in a lot of ways.

Mostly nitpicks from me though. Good job by the Atlus team here. I'd probably give it a 8.75/10. I enjoyed Rebirth a bit more and would give it the edge for GOTY.

In my top 10 for 2024 but definitely not in my top 5, still think the Metacritic score is suspiciously high and I say that as fan who bought the CE and loves this dev team 🤷🏻‍♂️

Solid choice. 👍

Atlus RPGs have always been political, and the themes in this one felt especially relevant this year. It wasn't obnoxiously preaching right or left wing politics but had a good dig around in the ideas of how society and politics interact.

Sadly, it also outstays its welcome toward the end like most other Atlus RPGs. A really good game nonetheless and one that proved PS3 graphics can still be good enough in 2024.

Same for me. But the worst part was the excessive amount of talking. Every conversation is like 3x as long as it needs to be. By the last 1/3 of the game I was skimming most of the important conversations and completely skipping the rest.

Deserved. This game really grew on me and by the end, I was completely hooked on its superb RPG mechanics, progression and characters. That final boss left quite the impression on me.

Wow nice, two turnbased games for Gamespot GOTY in a row, never thought that will happen.
I think IGN goty will be Astro Bot now.

What is the best jrpg? Genuine question, I want to play something, haha.
Obviously subjective. But to my tastes, I preferred FF7Rebirth, Yakuza Infinite Wealth, and SMTVV even when I'd already played the original on the switch. ¯\_()_/¯
(No Unicord Overlord for me, that kind of thing is not my jam)
No hate on MR though. It's still a fantastic game. Just goes to show the depth and quality of the JRPG competition this year.
