2025 predictions

Ads revenue will become more prominent on PC and console

After an extended period of strong growth, the games market has begun to face growth challenges. Some game makers will turn to advertising – which has largely been untapped on console and PC – to drive growth. Advertising will become more prominent at platform level (Xbox and PlayStation menus) and at game level (immersive, interstitial, and rewarded alike).

What is more, mobile developers are increasingly entering console and PC (and will bring mobile ad monetisation learnings with them). While game developers have experimented with advertising in the past, the revenue stream is more viable now as programmatic advertising means ads are more automated and specific.

Gaming is now at the front of mind for marketers and there is also a necessity: the games market and advertisers alike need new revenue streams.

Games Industry.biz brought together a group of gaming analysts to give their informed opinions on big trends you should expect to see in 2025. Of course, many talked about the giant impact the Nintendo Switch 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI (if it isn’t delayed) will have on the market, but one particular prediction stood out to us for being something we could see a lot of gamers object to. Rhys Elliott, games analyst for Midia Research, thinks that advertisements in games might take off, particularly on PlayStation and Xbox.

How games could implement more advertisements

The way Elliott explains his reasoning seems to imply that the home page for your console will become more flooded with advertisements from other companies, but we could speculate to see a world where they go beyond that. Think about every time you open up the PS5 or Xbox dashboard when you are in a game. That’s plenty of real estate that could go to ads. Party chat, store pages, or even settings menus could be impacted with ads.

Elliott also predicts the games themselves being injected with more ads going forward. He mentions these instances being “immersive, interstitial, and rewarded,” which implies things to be more built into the game world. Think of things like Monster Energy in Death Stranding or the restaurants in Crazy Taxi. You can also expect to see more crossovers like Squid Games in Call of Duty. We’ve seen a lot of mobile developers start making their jump into PC and console markets in recent years, so there is a chance the mobile way of monetization may try to further strengthen its grip in those areas.

Will games have more advertisements in them this year?

It’s important to remember that Rhys Elliott is just giving a prediction for how he could see gaming companies act this year. It’s by no means a guarantee that your PS5 and Xbox Series X will be bombarded with ads, but don’t rule out the possibility. We’ve already seen these companies lay off tens of thousands of employees just last year, and we know they are always chasing revenue growth, no matter what. At the end of the day, it might not happen, but there is a world where you see tons of advertisements every time you boot up Grand Theft Auto VI after it releases.

Dude, I forget ads on the internet are a thing, and don't play games that really have anyway to put advertising in them. I could see the annual franchises getting ads for like extra XP or something though.

I’m so sick of fucking ads. YouTube already skull rapes people enough with ads. YouTube already get like a minute and a half of video and then like 6 or 7 ads in a row. Don’t bring that bullshit to games. For the love of god.

Because people want to play them or maybe the dev is passionate about that setting.
My point is that this will influence which games are green lit from big publishers. I'm actually shocked ads aren't more prevalent in games today (where they make sense). Btw, I love the medieval / fantasy setting.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

I can see that happening but man I hope it doesn't. I don't mind an ad here and there but I don't want it to become the standard, would be very immersion breaking.

For example, those soy bags on Deus Ex? I wouldn't mind if they said "Cheetos" instead. But in a medieval setting or some other fantastical setting it could be a deal breaker.

Yeah agree. Can't think of many games that do it, and after Death Stranding I thought we would be seeing those more often, but I guess not.

Btw, I love the medieval / fantasy setting.
So do I my man.

They are prevalent in mobile games, which is most of the "industry".
I wonder why they haven't made the jump to our side of the fence (consoles PC)? They should totally play a 90 second ad every 10 minutes in the latest Madden. It would make the experience more immersive.

It is because the controls are too good and players don't accidentally click on the adverts as often.

I hope Switch 2 truly does have backward compatability. It's looking more and more like gaming is drifting away from me.
