Gaming Close Calls

Defensor

Mistaken iRobbery!
I'm sure some of you have had some close calls where you beat a level/boss at the last minute right before you are about to die. You could have no vitality left or your teammates have fallen at the worst time. Playing Resident Evil Outbreak File#2 online with two GAFfers; CVXFREAK, LHK, and a lucky player, we played Showdown 3 on Hard. Showdown 3 is a basically a boss rush of all the bosses from both Outbreak titles. Totaling up to 11 bosses with some extra enemies thrown in, it requires teamwork to survive.

Yoko = FireEmblemPride(CVXFREAK)
Elliott = Amibite
David = Defensors(me)

After playing for more than 30 minutes, three of us with 90%+ Virus gauges, 10 bosses dead, our team was running low on ammo and low on health sprays/herbs. At the last second when two of our teammates trying to hammer the final boss get KOed by the 1-hit kill move that the Crimson Crazy Mr.X does(notice CVXFREAK remains alive after sustaining three of the 1-hit kill punches because of the lucky charm Yoko carries), Yoko slashes the tyrant with the knife and I pulled off the 4-hit knife combo during the start of the 1-hit kill move. The combination of David's 4th spinning slash and Yoko's knifing as well, finally put an end to the final boss.

Here is the video I recorded of us playing with a closecall at the end:

Questions? Comments? Your close call stories?

EDIT: C- Warrior, you should have played tonight!

i get close calls in all games i play at least once :lol just when the boss is about to die, even if i have little health, i go nuts and play game of who gets killed first without thinking

:lol :lol I kept missing with the moltov cocktails due to lag. Notice how in one part I got hit walking toward it.

Good game Defensor, hilarious too.

probably some last-second parry -> chip damage death in third strike, or maybe rushing a tower whore in warcraft 3 to take over his base and starve him to death.

Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3. You will beat a boss and die so many times with just a sliver of life making the difference.

Outbreak is full of close calls. Showdown 3 is a bitch and a half too.

awesome game. i havent played in many weeks. i need to fire up the ps2 very soon.

My most recent was the Silent Hill 3 end boss. Just ran out of ammo, no health, and I couldn't figure out how to melee without getting hit.

So, I run up and do a heavy attack with a maul. You can't get any slower.

It killed it. It was amazing. If the attack didn't finish it off, I was dead.

I would get these close calls in Monster Rancher all the time, because the combat system was completely broken. The worst was one battle where I got nailed for 999 damage by an attack with a 3% success rate or something, then my monster used Grit (reviving itself with 1 health) and hit the other guy for 999 damage. :lol

Yeah I know, but LHK told me what happened before you posted. Funny shit, that's what he gets for going all rambo last minute.

You NEVER EVER go up against Mr. X while you're in danger health. You can't back out fast enough form his 1-hit kill. The only person that should have been attacking with the hammer was Yoko. Since she had the charm, there is no way she could have died from his one-hit kill. Tsk Tsk.

Although I'm sure it was a desperation attack, go for broke type of thing.0

BTW, you're gonna have to turn the brightness up on your monitor to see it better.

If you get over its shortcomings, yeah it is.

Honestly, the only shortcoming is the fact that the load times are 8 seconds long.

However, we play (w/GAFFERS) with a Sony HDD, so load times are cut n' half.

Great topic, lots of close calls in my gaming life but these two were the closest:

Metroid Prime.
First playthrough. Omega Pirate AND/OR Metroid Prime (first form, second form killed me :lol). Those were two hard SOBs that I just barerly defeated with less than 50 HP left. Screen flased red, I was sure he will beat me (Pirate) but I kept on fighting. I layed down my last PowerBomb to finish off those pesky pirates and luckily Mr. Omega was hurt by it as well :lol
The Metroid Prime battle was just a frenzy change-a-color, change-a-beam firefight. At the end when I was down to 1 tank I just ignored his attacks (those two flying orbs) and concentrated on stuffing him with lead :lol He died, I jumped from joy only to see the second form emerging. With around 68 HP left :lol

Well, you gotta add some of the goofy camera angles with it. Oscar sometimes obstructs my view. The controls when the camera angles change need to be fleshed out a bit.

Fun game otherwise.

Final boss in Metroid Prime 2. When I killed it, I wasn't sure which one of us died. Then I saw the death cinematic and the urine started to flow like the Rio Grande.

Eh, more like 4-6secs between rooms depending on how old your PS2 is. With the Hdd, loading between rooms is 1-3 secs. If Capcom makes another Outbreak or another Resident Evil online game, they really need to get some sort of new streaming technology to have little to no loadtimes between rooms. At least have it load multiple rooms before seeing another "Now Loading" screen.

not sure if it's quite a close call - but playing FzeroGX, on the big blue track - i'm in about 15th place, my ship runs out of energy, bursts into flames and i get the 'game over' voice - can't actually remember what he says ('retired'?).. suddenly, i get hit by another ship, FLY up in the air on the last straight, and go over the finish line in 1st place :lol

You want close calls? Play Gradius V, especially the astroid level in which i made the thread on earlier. I kept saying."Holy crap!! How am i alive!?"

Kingdom Hearts - I would say with Sephiroth, no more health and megalixers and he had one more hit to go. I got him with a lucky shot right after he did Omnislash and blocked them all.

Ace Combat 5 - The mission before Unsung War and towards the end, i had like 90% damage. Going inside that tiny hole and almost crashing countless times and finally beating the mission.

Resident Evil 3 - Defeating first Nemesis with only "Danger" left.

Final Fantasy VIII - Defeating
Ultimecia
with only 1 HP on everyone after she used Hell's Judgement.

Final Fantasy IX - Beating the game with only Zidane left standing.

It's a Resident Evil game, 'camera' issue isn't really a problem since the action sense of the game is pretty moderate.

As for the topic, I've had an ass load of close calls in all of gaming.

Like everyone who's played them, obviously the Devil May Cry's and the Ninja Gaiden's of the world, but to lesser of a degree many RPG's, like Final Fantasy I, VII and Dragon Quest titles.

No more items, no more magic, all but one party member dead, you perform that last attack that deals the measly 88 points of damage and WINNAR! That's just awesome.

lol, everything with F-Zero GX was a close call. damn taht game was hard

Might as well ask, any Outbreak File 2 GAFFERS here?

CVXfreak = FireEmblemX

Defensor = Defensor

Me and LHK share the same account = lowhighkang

that's all I know. The game is pretty damn fun if you play with the people with HDD's and if you know them etc. (get games going on AIM etc.)

Well it's not the camera's fault if you put it that way. None of the other REs had a giant elephant for a boss battle. Still, I wish they adjusted it so I could see where I was running when Oscar blocked my view. :D

When I was a kid, the Frankenstein/Igor boss in Castlevania (NES) was the bane of my existence, and then Dark Falz in Phantasy Star (SMS) caused me some major headaches, too.

Galamoth (that giant golden SOB) in Symphony of the Night took a few tries, and when I beat him for the first time, I think it was luck. Oh well, I'll take it. :)

Some of the later Rage Racer races felt like a millisecond error would've ended up in a 2nd place finish. That was perhaps the most hardcore RR game ever. I miss it.

Here was my angle of George when I got thrown to the entrance of Apple Inn by Regis Licker. The camera was aimed better from Mark's point of view:

Madden 06 recently.

Scored 13 in the 4th quarter. Last 2 minutes actually. To start the 4th, I was down 17-14. The cpu on all-madden scored a TD with 2:40 or something remaining, going up 10, 24-14. I get it back and make a drive. All the way downfield in about a minute. Minute and a half left. Now the onside kick. Get that back which was insane. Now Im at my own 40, no timeouts. I move the ball with some 10 and 20 yard completions. Spike it after I'm in position. 40-50 seconds left maybe. Now in the redzone. With a 4th down though caused by a spike and a couple drops. I decide to kick. 20 seconds left or so. It's good. 24-24. I kick it off and control my guy to just stop em as not to cause any scares. But what happens is I really pop him. Fumble! I recover!

Now there's 15 seconds to go. I decide a quick run, and a spike afteward to make so no more kick. Also straighter since I was to the right a little. So I run left and get tackled quick. But I forget to hold B! No timeouts. 11.. 10.. 9.. I think for a split second after the play a special teams spike when the play call menu comes up, then decide I just kick it. In seriously quick speed. Choose the play at a record time and the guys run out there slow as a videogame cpu controlled idiot does. 8.. 7.. 6.. I started the meter up, stopped it good, but thought there is no time to even get back 3.. 2.. 1.. I didn't even hit a partially accurate bar. I stopped it prematurely!! It's off literally a second before the gameclock's done though, and I shout "nooooo!" cause the accuracy bar and my stupidity. I've even missed extra points cause that. Sure miss in my mind until.. The ball goes left...... THEN RIGHT? It's moving back in! Wind?!! Just over the cross bars and good! I literally started laughing on the spot and yelling "Whoooooooo!!!" at 4am. My stupidity really made it memorable. :lol That along with the exciting comeback prior to that kick.

I was playin 8 player Halo 2 (two xboxes), and I was down 10 kills going up to 25. The guy in first had 24, and i made this incredible streak of 10 kills in like 1 minute, killing everyone. It was so fucking awesome, and i was mainly doing some sick head shots using the pistol.

F-Zero GX - do not even get me started with this game.
The definition of close calls. I don't know how many races are decided by hundredths and even thousandths of a freaking second. It's ridiculous. And that tunnel story mode level...Jesus H. Christ.

I must say close calls is the best feeling in gaming.

But it's such a risk. Make it too hard, and you got some people that bitch to no end (*coughdevilamycry3cough*) and if you come and make it slightly too easy, the close calls never come to form.

That's why I think online play is so appealing, it really allows the 'close-call' or 'win by a slim thread' aspect a reality simply because you can get paired with equally skilled players.
