Gaming In The Year 2010

Screw all this next-gen hype, what do you think we're in store for in the next-next-gen? Will HD sets finally penetrate the average home? Will PC gaming still be alive? Will broadband content distribution finally catch on? Do you think we'll see more modular, upgradeable consoles? What kind of whacky controller will Nintendo be hyping? Will Microsoft still be in the game? Will Sony keep the throne? Duke Nukem Forever?

Sex ports?

This is gonna get worse before it gets better, in my opinion. Already companies folded over and games were cut short in development time and other horrible problems just crapped all over this generation. I still dont see how some of you think this is going to be the best gen "EVARRR"

- on-line distribution makes up for 80% of whole distribution
- Europe market >> US market >> Zair market >> Japanese market
- PC gaming's still there, revitalized with PPU-only and first raytraced games that can't be done on the slowass aging PS3 and 360
- next-gen (PS4, Xbox 3, Revo 2) hype starts with words: "PC gaming is dead."
- both PS4 and Xbox 3 will feature a Revo-like controller

(Note: numbers straight from my ass.)
- marketshare (world): 60% PS3, 25% 360, 15% Revo.
- marketshare (world): 55% DS2, 45% PSP2

I'm excited about some of the stuff we're being promised this generation (although all this stealth 'target render' shit is getting old), but part of me kind of thinks Nintendo has a good long-term idea in mind - less emphasis on power and expensive developments and more emphasis of a unique, simple, fun experience.

Console gaming will not truly evolve until

Arcades are 100% globally dead.
"Every" game is ported to "every" console and handheld, and 2D game series stop regurgitating itself for small profit.
"Every" game has an online version or online requirements.

I see the current year as one of many in which the concept of videogaming is transforming from a social medium that allows interactivity to an interactive medium that allows socialization, highlighted by the impeding death of arcades and the rise of online gaming. However, we're also reaching a point where a majority of the entire history of gaming is accessible to today's consumer, legally and illegally, and once all of the companies are done porting their game histories onto all possible platforms and making online versions of these same games and series, there'll be nowhere left for videogames to go but to finally go back to the drawing board for making new genres, gameplay and graphic standards, and IP.

We're still in the generations where each new hardware set is just more of the same from previous generations, but mostly prettier. I don't forsee the X360/PS3/Rev generation to be the last of this business model, either. More companies need to fold and more series need to die before the current trends reach their logical end.

So, gaming in 2010 could just be more of the same as it is now, minus a few companies; it all depends on how long the majority of consumers are willing to fund the current business model.

On the console front, Hideo Kojima's MGS5 gets "Game of the Show" from major publications for three consecutive E3s...without being playable...but the demo will be packaged in Suikoden 37: It Still Sucks to help keep that series alive.

The new Xbox 720 (now with twice the ram and $160 controllers) sells out its initial shipment in the US and EU, but isn't shipped to japan at all, which is in the grips of nintendo's latest trend: Wavy Stick Party 3.

PC gaming is further marginalized. id releases Doom 5, a distinct advancement in keyhunting simulators, but it's available exclusively packaged into the latest $1200 X66669999GTX video card. John Carmack sells his yacht to fund a heroin addiction, and makes another keynote speech at this year's Quakecon tent on the shoulder of I-95 (simulcasted worldwide for the sake of message board trolling).

Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Dildo. Yes, Yes, Maybe 2016.

RESPONES!
1. Not a chance. Maybe 25%, and even that's unlikely.
2. Stranger things have happened.
3. PC gaming will remain niche, but still profitable enough for devs and publisher to keep a steady supply of games coming. PPUs will not take off till Nvidia or ATI decide to build one into a family of videocards.
4. Console makers don't care about PC games. Console gamers don't care about pc games. The only guys saying PC games are dead are magazine editors, because the biggest boldest headlines proclaim stupid bullshit like "X is Dead!"
5. Maybe as an optional add on, like the lightgun zapper. The gamepad was not waiting for cheap gyroscopes to shuffle off this mortal coil. It stuck around for 30 years because it works, damn it. Same thing for the keyboard and mouse.

- HDTV's will be in the majority of people's homes.

- PC Gaming will be on life support.

- Broadband Content Distribution will catch on... I will say about 65% of PC gamers will use it.

- No... Instead... around that time Sony & MS will license their technology to third party hardware developers like samsung, panasonic, etc. and console gaming wiill finally be merged into set top boxes... nintendo will remain niche.. like apple. (the possibility of a hybrid console from samsung... using both sony and microsoft tech will save people lots of money)

- Nintendo will probably keep using the controller they have now if it turns out to be a success... if not they will just merge the classic controller with some of the "N-Remote" features.

- Yep... the Xbox 360 will be a success and I predict MS could take a good chunk away from Sony... if they play their cards right.

- Yep... but by a small margin

- Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC Release

- Yep... Porn & Console Gaming will happen... once they finally make the Red Curtain in video game stores

- on-line distribution makes up for 80% of whole distribution

Nope, will not happen. Too many companies is against this for it to happen anytime soon. The technology has existed for a long time but noone cares. Valve had Steam finished way before HL2 but didn't want to launch it until HL2 because thats pretty much the only game to this point to be able to push people into bying it online.

Maybe if someone came up with an idea of caching games onto consoles with some PPP scheme, Pay-per-play. Maybe some companies would be interested. For now, online distribution is pretty much dead in the industry.

RESPONSES 2, old buddy!

1. 80% may be exagerrated, 25% underrated. Who knows? We're talking about 2010 here, that's 5 years from now on.

2. Yeah.

3. Here :) Sooner than you think (R520!)

4. Well yeah it grabs attention pretty well.

5. I for one would like something new, a new method of controlling, yes, even replacing my trusted mouse & keyboard. GameCube's pad is perfect in my hands but I know something better can be and will be invented, sooner or later. Dual Shock 3? Revo's remote? We shall see.

I can really see this happening.

Why would they make a unified console when they can continue to profit off of three?

Two big things hold back digital distribution. The first is technology, but I agree it will be a non-issue in 5 years. Broadband is well on its way to being the defacto method of going online, and you can already put a terrabyte of storage in a PC without breaking the bank. Who knows, maybe that's MS trump card. PS3 launches with Blu-Ray, MS counters with a 200gig hard drive that you can copy games to.

...

Nah :)

The other hurdle is public perception. For some reason, a lot (a LOT) of gamers, even PC GAMERS, are adverse to buying content as opposed to CDs/DVDs. I would love to see the ratio of retail vs. steam purchase for HL2, because I'm willing to bet Steam made up 15% or less. People are going to have to give up the concept of owning a piece of plastic, and embrace owning the code. Who knows how long that will take to happen.

And I'm also keen on propietary hardware. Magic remotes for everyone! But do we need to throw the baby out with the bathwater? Are you just not going to play Sonic or Street Fighter or Quake 3 anymore? Because none of those are going to work right controlled with a wand.

(fyi- i have not used a rev controller, but if you think its going to supplant mouse/keyboard for the traditional FPS, keep dreaming.)

Rev's controllers seems just the closest thing to that gloves Cruise used in Minority Report. I would kill to have such a device (gloves) for working in Windows, now. Gestures are way more natural than moving a mouse in 2D space.

Someday mice will be replaced with that technology or so I hope.

Or maybe I'm just an advocate of everything that's new tech?

Why does any software company decide to make consoles when they can make (or continue making) money off existing systems? EA could always continue to make games for other consoles, and have certain system-selling EA games (Madden) be exclusive to their own. It's a "best of both worlds" scenario for them. I didn't say they WOULD do it, but I can certainly see it happening.

My 10 predicitons for gaming in 2010 AND BEYOND

1.Looking foward to the next zelda, and wondering how the art will be like
2.The MGS6 teaser trailer was amazing, and I can't wait for the real trailer, apparently, this time snake will be an A.I. guiding Otacon as he sneaks around an anime convention cosplaying as Raiden
3. even more quirky games as the DS2 will have HANDLE™ gameplay as well as the TOUCH™ gameplay
4.First Person Shooters are as popular as DDR clones and story driven action games are the new HOT THANG
5. FFXIV will be first game with a transexual main character
6.SQUARE-ENIX-TAITO-HUDSON-KONAMI will merge with CAPCOM-MAJESCO and is considering merging with SEGA-SAMMY-ATLUS
7.EA will own every single sport license ever, including the all new EXTREME ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS STREET with EA TRAX
8.Big movies will have a trailer of their license game during the film
9.Mario Sumo Wrestling will be develope by UBISOFT
10.GAF will remain the same

4. Console makers don't care about PC games.

Actually one console maker cares about PC games. Microsoft has an interest that PC gaming doesn't die, cause if it does a big point of the Windows-Monopoly isn't existing anymore. The only real reason why I won't change my operating system to Linux or even buy a MAC is that I can't play games on these plattforms.

- The anticipated Super Mario 256 will move to the new machine, even though Nintendo promised this was the main feast and Mario Revolution/Super Mario 128 was the appetizer (like with what happened with SMS and SM128)
- Any developer who doesn't sell millions of games annually either closes its doors, is bought or, or mergers. Square Enix and Konami will swallow several more developers next generation. EA in America and Ubi Soft in Europe will do the same.
- Sega/Sammy faces another financial crisis and lives basically from game release to game release. They will go belly up before the 1024 bit generation (2015)
- Arcades will die off almost completely. Simultaneous arcade/console releases will happen more often to the point where arcades are irrelevant.
- Several new franchises will be at the popular helm; none of them will be the same ones as here in 2005 except for Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid. Next gen, GTA will lose their popularity and so will Final Fantasy.
- The PSP2 comes out, with Super UMDs, data storages that have about 10-15 GB of data.
- Even with the popular GBE, Nintendo unveils the DS2 to counter the PSP2. DS2 will be at the specs of what the PSP is now but with two touch screens (thats right, both screens can be used to touch), online games out of the box, and full fledged voice recognition software. DS2 and GBE games can directly interact with each other and will use proprietary game cards that go up to 4 GB, or the size of a DVD.
- The Xbox 4000 is revealed with Microsoft claiming they will spank the PS4 (which will come out in 2011) because they learned all their lessons from Xbox360. Microsoft pays several billion for the best technology, making it the first console but also the most powerful. Microsoft will take $300 hits on each machine sold because they want to win that badly.
- Microsoft backs a handheld system...and fails. Microsoft and its subsidiaries announce a lot of their Xbox/Xbox 360 hits to the handheld but nobody is interested enough to bite. This is the counter to the DS2 and PSP2, announced shortly after the former two handhelds.

Sony: PlayStation 4 will include electroshock circuitry
Company chairman promises to deliver "a truly immersive experience"
By: The Associated Press
Published: April 1, 2010

Sony of America chairman George W. Bush announced that the latest incarnation of the PlayStation will include electroshock circuits that attach to the player's skin and deliver jolts of electricity during the game. "We consider the UltraShock controller the 'killer app' that will resurrect the industry," said Bush at yesterday's press conference. "Just imagine every nerve in your body burning when you're hit by Ganon's death beams. This is the sort of innovation that will make The Legend of Zelda: The Same Shit You Played Twenty-Five Years Ago a truly immersive experience."

Analysts aren't convinced. "We're just not sure that consumers will shell out $999 for this, what with the collapse of the global economy and all," said Hugh Jass, an analyst for United Global Conglomeracy.

Bush countered that the PlayStation4 contains onboard support for electroshock therapy when coupled with the UltraShock controller, "to deliver a brief moment of respite for Americans who are suffering during this time of global upheaval. Now more than ever," said Bush, who appeared visibly intoxicated during the conference. The three remaining major videogame producers -- Sony, EA, and Vivid Video -- promised full support for the UltraShock in their games. Sony subsidiary Sega is planning a line of "Heart Trainer" games that will convert the PlayStation 4 into a defillibrator for those who can cannot afford emergency room care. "The video game console's integration into the home has arrived," said Bush.

Sony's plan is not nearly as radical as the approach taken by EA subsidiary Rockstar Games for Grand Theft Auto: Urban Cannibalism, which now allows the player to collect, cook, and eat the body parts of slain victims. The game includes a gun that mounts under a television, and fires rubber bullets at the appropriate areas of the player's body when their onscreen character is hit by incoming fire. Senator Madonna has called for a nationwide boycott of EA in protest.

2010 will see the launch of the Xbox 720 or whatever it'll be called. It'll launch around 5 years from the 360 launch to the nose. If the 360 is succesfull that is. PS4 will come in 2011 while nintendo will have given the home systems a rest, unless the revolution succeeds , in which case we'll get a new one in 2011 or 2012 and it'll use holograms.

Everyone and there dog will own a 600 dollar CNT 45 inch 1080P display and graphically we'll see games that look as good as the movie The incredibles but take 300 people 40 months to make, this will mean fewer yearly releases on new systems that'll cost 100 bucks a pop and last 10 hours and downloadable episodic content will be commonplace while you wait for the sequel.

lol... I'm amazed they havn't yet... but then again they're making a killing right now.. I hate EA :( my opinion though.

Long live Sega! lol

- After the expiry of the EA NFL deal and lots of backhanded deals, 989 Sports emerges with exclusive licensing, forcing EA to develop Sims Football 2011.
- The NHL license will have been taken by the YOU'RE WINNER developers.
- 2K Sports does a counter-exclusive for WSB, forcing EA to release its own console if it wanted to release a WSB game. EA does do that and releases MVP 2011 on the EA/Nokia N-gage XXX.
- Visual Concepts is on-sold to Ubisoft, where a Flogian Brothers x Splinter Cell party game has been commissioned.
- DNF is released in 7 part trilogy in 2009, 3DRealms promises part 2 will be released in the next decade
- Developers have figured out how to make landscapes look realistic but unable to keep gamers falling off cliffs.
- Games still require players to fetch keys, backtrack, solve crate puzzles, and participate in stealth minigames in an action/adventure/RPG.
- Arcade machines have been replaced by video-game themed pachinko machines, and the public hasn't noticed the difference.
- Shenmue III is still rumoured to be in development.

all scrabble for next next gen xbox for xlive 3.

ps4, nintendo 6, Atari 6x10^4, and any other console you can dream up vanish from market place.

by 2013, internet is renamed xlive pure, and by 2014 bill gates leads first settlement on Jupiter moon, Europe, on space ship secretly powered on a duel core cell 3 processor.

I could expound more on this.

2008: demand for xlive 3 is about to boil over, ms tries to appease public outcry delay only in line with 4 year life cycle xbox has been following.

2009: xbox 360 sales top 20 million A MONTH. two suicides are claimed responsive due to lack of xbox 360 availability on toys r us shelves. total sales zoom past 200 million, nearing 300 million.

2010: the calculated power of xenos gpu 2 surpases 100 teraflops. Microsoft promises new era of holygram dispays in homes, and advanced space research. A cell desktop is used to construct pandimentional gate for exploration in universe, ms claimed xenos used, microsoft given credit for creating new utopia.

I hope I can think of more later.

Just like we don't have flying cars, not too much will change :D

Depending on how well the Revolution does we should start to see a shift in their strategy. If the Revo does poorly, then Nintendo will shift more into portable gaming and expanding it. Which is a good thing. They won't go third party, but will continue to evolve their portable market and we may see for their next console a portable Revo/DS hybrid. Option to connect to TV's or just go portable with it. Sony may follow suit (portables are heading in that direction anyways) and may focus more on making not their consoles a portable media hub but the handheld instead.

MS will continue with their dreams of taking over your house's entertainment.

HD tv hits about 50 percent market penetration, Nintendo fans will still be defending Revo's lack of HD and adamantly not purchasing now cheap HDTV's just to spite, well whoever it is they are trying to spite. BRD sales up, not surpassing DVD sales though and probably never will but are doing much better then Laserdiscs.

Japan - PS3 60 percent of market, Rev - 35 percent, Xbox 360 - 5 percent
EU - PS3 45 percent of market, 360 - 35 percent, Rev - 20 percent
US - PS3 40 percent of market, 360 35 percent, Rev - 24 percent, Phantom - 1percent

Overall sales down from this generation though.

We will be 5 years older.

I win, flawless victory.

Not as safe bets could be:

We will be still complaining about the games others like. Drinky will write the big american novel and Bishoptl will push Relic to mix Homeworld and Warhammer 40.000 to create the more massive, badass RTS game ever, possibly based on the Horus Heressy.

Ah, Xbox 360 won´t have 1.000 millions of users.

-the system i like will be really popular

-some guys working for the companies producing the other systems will be in some kind of embarrassing situation

-a game series will release an amusingly high-numbered installment

-a game i like will have a really good sequel
