I used to work with a guy that drove a garbage truck for the city of Sarasota as his day job. Dude basically furnished his house with nice stuff that people were throwing away.

A huge leather sectional with recliners, surround system with receiver, sub, and speakers, coffee tables, end tables, the list goes on and on.

My 70 years old father had a defective keyboard on his laptop and went to the store 2 days later and bought a new one.
I cleaned the old one with compressed air and it's working fine.

I have informed my siblings that my comics collection is crazy valuable so they don't throw it in the paper recycling dumpster if I kick the bucket.

As far as i know in my country not the normal trash can, but bulky trash that you have to make an appointment for the pickup. From that point it's county propery and theft if you take it.
But taking something from the normal trashcan is also illegal. It's also theft or theft + tresspassing if the trash can is on the owner's property.

Well might just apply to recycling centers that they run (they are not allowed to give away or sale stuff that people dump there). But yes, there seemed to have been an incident a while back where some garbage man collected and fixed broken CCTV cameras that he sold online and he got
reported for stealing.

Again though, you have to deal with quite valuable stuff before someone cares.

And as the guy pointed out above. If its your trashcan its also your thrash until you let someone else pick it up.

I'm on the cusp of tossing out my Panasonic home theatre system when I plan to move next year. It's old (over 10 years old), but I cant find one person who'd take it for free. BR + 5 speakers + subwoofer. Everyone snubs their nose not needing it or want an optical drive piece of equipment. And I dont want the hassle of trying to sell it for $50.

I found a giant gutted case that had been thrown out the only remaining parts were mobo and a 1080. But the 1080 had the heatsink and fans replaced for the liquid cooling system that had been cut apart. I stuck the card in another PC just to test and it still worked...

Of course I wonder if it's really working. What I mean is you could have a combo that works for a few minutes but there's something wrong with it that causes it to crash after some amount of time sporadically. I saw that because I have an old motherboard/cpu combo that does that after 10 minutes and even doing a full reinstall of windows didn't fix it. Admittedly it's an old Q6600 so no point in figuring out what's actually broken but I'm wondering if something similar has happened here. (IE you'd actually have to do a stress test to figure out if it's really working as expected.)
