Gargoyles on Xbox 360
Talent behind Shenmue and Zombie Revenge sign on for 360.
by Anoop Gantayat

June 27, 2005 - According to reports out of Japan, Microsoft has signed on another Japanese developer for Xbox 360. Little-known 3rd party developer Gargoyle Mechanics is reported to be working on one new game for the system. Unfortunately, the information leak ends there.

Gargoyle Mechanics has had a hand in the development of a number of past titles. Members of the company worked on planning, programming and graphics for the first Shenmue on Dreamcast, programming for Zombie Revenge and also ported Capcom's Dino Crisis to the system. Most recently, the company developed Azumi for D3 Publisher.

edit: I think they'll probably be used for just programming along with a "known" designer.

And MS grabs another D-grade Japanese developer ^^;

Well at least they still have Mizuguchi and Okamoto on board. Though it would be nice if they could get another big name person + development team. I'm sure Suzuki would like free money to make Shenmue 3 ;P

It seems they're taking the strategy to get great designers and putting small, technically talented developers on realizing their "visions". At least they're doing this with Blue Dragon (Sakaguchi+Artoon) and 99 Nights (Mizuguchi+Phantagram). However I don't remember if Okamoto and the other Mystwalker title, Lost Odyssey, are being developed in a similar way.

Ignoring Sakaguchi?

They aren't D grade if they are former Sega developers. Rumor has it that a large amount of them have left Sega in the past few years. At least let them prove themselves first.

I thought they were bringing a game based on this solid cartoon to 360 :( :

Artoon is also former Sega, and quite high profile for some of them. I don't think they released one great game since they left Sega...
I still have a bit of hope that with proper directing (Sakaguchi or Mizuguchi, I think Okamoto is working with his own people) they will be able to do great things. But I'm not holding my breath either.

Gotta love Teamxbox' take on this news :

Talk about selective memory too :

In 2002, Xbox gamers enjoyed Shenmue II, the sequel to the first Shenmue title for the Sega Dreamcast. Shenmue II was developed exclusively for the Xbox by SEGA-AM2 under the direction of world-renowned video game developer Yu Suzuki.

Impressive TeamXbox ... Shenmue 2 Xbox was just a port of the DC one . Developed exclusively??

Is just so stupid to think that this guys can develop Shenmue3 just cause they have done something on chapter 1 ... The ending credits of both Shenmues are maybe the longest ever , it appears every single person that have been related to Sega in some way ...

Seriously , even appears Mizuguchi , appears Arc Systems . Will be a neverending story if anytime that some developer that worked on Shemmue jumps on 360 wagon some idiot publish about Shenmue 3 .

Shenmue IP I think is a personal property of Suzuki himself , not Sega , I even don´t know how strong is the relationship between Digital Rex and Sega , but I seriously doubt that Suzuki could sell his most personal project .

Well , it has been almost two years since Digital Rex foundation and still no news about any future works of them . I´m hope that they are developing Shenmue 3 all this time , I´m not sure if I really want a Shenmue 3 not developed by Suzuki .

Shenmue 2 greatest game of all time .

Just checked Digital Rex homepage .

Still as empty as the soul of Shenmue haters ... I wonder what in the hell is doing Suzuki ... Sure it comes to mind VF5 but I think is developed by AM2 not Digital Rex .

How utterly ignorant.

I'm ignoring Sakaguchi for now because of the teams they've given him for his two games. The chances of the games actually turning out great is not that high.

At least with Mizuguchi and Okamoto there hasn't been any news of them working with development teams who have bad reputations; so hopefully these two will put out some great stuff on the system.

I think that the director is the most important think in a flim and in a game .

Sure Artoon released some horrible games like Swords of Destiny or Blinx , but if 150 man are well directed they can achieve great goals .

Sakaguchi + Toriyama +Slam Dunk and Vagabond mangaka + Uematsu + some famous japanese novelist + 150 small yellow slaves =2 great games .

Yeah, no kidding. I didn't know who developed that (even though I've played it) and the news posting started out pretty well, but ended in tragedy. :(

See D2M15s post. They have already proven themselves to be crap.

Well with Square-Enix now on board they pretty much got all of the big ones they could. Who else is there really? Seems to me like they're just cleaning up now. Making sure they also have plenty of B and C titles on the 360 in Japan in between the big releases. They do rent games over their, don't they? This news on Xbox would have been pretty shitty, so fans had to rely on companies like this and pray they'd come out with a hit, but on the 360 it just compliments all the other great Japanese support that's going to serve as their main "base" of developers.

I think the point is it's pretty pointless to have Square-Enix when all you're getting is several year old ports of FFXI and a new MMORPG like World of Mana. Some would argue that these moves are because they can't secure the big name exclusives they want, but of course it's far too early to judge if MystWalker was because they couldn't get DQ and FFNumbered/NonMMORPG, or if Real Time was because they couldn't get GTA exclusively.

No they don't.

I still think it remains to be seen. So far, it still looks like PS3 is going to get the majority of big-name Japanese support (already guaranteed a true FF, Tekken, Devil May Cry, Mobile Gundam, Ni-Oh and 2 other games from KOEI already, etc...). It's still early and we haven't seen all the cards yet, but I think it's pretty clear where the trends are early on until one or the other system starts being wildly successful.

Naturally, if Microsoft does officially secure Virtual Fighter exclusively, and perhaps a game like Winning Eleven... it's gonna be a big fight.

Artoon did make the gyroscopic Yoshi game on GBA. Quite decent. Much better than TEH BLINX!!11
