Gates + Moore: Not on Same Page?

Which is not to say that Halo may necessarily meet the same fate as some other faded brands. Like everyone else at Microsoft at this stage, Moore is thoroughly cagey about what's coming next from Bungie. It's been rumored that Halo 3 might drop as a counter to Sony's next hardware launch -- to that, Moore simply says, "The worst thing we could do is say we must ship Halo 3 when the PS3 ships."

"Halo 3 will ship when Halo 3 is of a magnitude of quality that the Halo nation will not string us up from the flagpole outside," he continues. "It's bigger than simply being a blunt instrument to take on PS3. Say the PS3 launch is in November, then you say Halo 3 is coming in the spring of 2007? Here's what it's like: people will wait."

I think Moore is just saying they won't trot Halo 3 out at PS3's launch without the title being the best it can be first. It seems to me that Gates is just putting their ideal situation out there. There's no reason to think that it couldn't happen that way.

Moore says: Halo 3 won't be rushed.
Gates says: maybe it will have to be.
 
I think the whole thing is pretty stupid anyway.
Did Majora's mask hold back the PS2 juggernaut?
And you can't tell me Halo is bigger than Zelda.

Wind waker hadn't come into the equation yet. Majora's mask was hot off the tails of the highest rated and best selling (?) game of all time up to that point.

And I agree that this could only hurt Halo more than it could the PS3.

Heheh, you edited before I hit submit. But yeah, if you're going by how gamers voted with sales, then yes, Halo is bigger than Zelda this gen.

And comparing other titles in the past that have been positioned against the coming of a new system is sort of pointless in this case. MM was on old hardware everyone was used to seeing for the last four years. That single title had none of the promise of amazing visuals, possibilities, and other new experiences (from all the new games) that come with owning a new console.
 
If Halo 3 is rushed then I won't buy it. It's as simple as that

I was burned by Halo 2's horrible rush job...I liked the game a lot but, damn, it was just obvious that the game was far away from what Bungie had originally planned. Ripping out online co-op was another nail in the coffin, IMO. Bungie will have to do a lot to get me trust them again tbh

I actually think Halo 3 launching day and date with PS3 is a clever move, on the proviso that PS3 has as weaker launch line-up as the PS2 did. Sort of a "Hey, thay may be all new and hot, but in the mean time we actually have games you want to play on ours."
 
there was a time when i could bitch for hours about this, but the fact is bungie is a hollow shell of what it once was. jj and max are gates' little bitches now, and when he says jump they stick his dick in their asses. they will ship when they are told to ship, and that's pretty much that.

gates is a little ridiculous in that he's exactly like a cartoon supervillain - so satisfied with his self-perceived brilliance that he gives away his hackneyed secret plan and chortles when someone asks because he's so sure it will succeed.

i hear his kids are only getting .02% of his money when he passes away, and that the rest goes to charity, so if that's the case, Bill Gates will become the next L. Ron Hubbard. although you'd have to know a thing or 2 about scinos to get a kick out of that zing.

but yeah, at the same time, making him some what evil to his kids. but whatever.

My feelings exactly. Halo 2 was OK, but still a big disappointment.
 
i'd go with gates.

in one 360 interview he said something like "we can't delay christmas" making a point deadlines are not optional.

noone knows how long halo3 has been in development... obviously a tactical move would have been to get it going in parallel with Halo2... not rocket science here.
 
I was just thinking about this earlier -- MS has been contradictory lately, what with the abovementioned Halo 3 comments as well as the more fundamental difference in how the architects talk about "without games we're just a box" and Gates goes on to state that games are just the condiment. How do they expect to get anywhere if they're all going in seperate directions? Reminds me of Sony Computer Entertainment vs. Sony Everything Else...
 
Well...Gates is running the show regardless of what Moore says. If Gates wants H3 out the day PS3 is released, it will be done. I think Gates is going to run the X-Box division like a business with hard deadlines and such. Now the rest of Microsoft isn't run that way, but then again every other unit in Microsoft that underperforms is promptly shut down.
 
I really doubt a single game coming out will prevent someone from buying a PS3. The reasoning just doesn't make sense to me. It's not like they are both $60 items someone normally makes a quick purchase decision for. A system purchase, specifically a system purchase at launch, is something someone plans out, sets aside money for, and looks forwards to. It's really two totally different purchases IMO.

If I as M$, even if Halo 3 was done I'd keep it on the shelf (or add more content). That way, they could save it for a big Sony game - like MGS4 or something.

That fact didn't stop them from releasing Halo 2 when it was not ready for prime-time.
 
I think it is a great strategy. I was stunned by the hype they created for Halo 2. If they can redirect some of that PS3 hype towards a new Halo, I think they could make an impact on Sony's sales. Though I'm not sure it would make a difference in the long run.

I'm not saying he won't or can't do it ... I'm just saying its a bad idea. And that's the problem; I'm not so sure Gates is really thet right man to run the show. Gaming is a different beast than productivity software.

Zelda was never that huge. It has always been a nice hit for short, but what really makes it big is how it affected the gaming world. I think the biggest selling Zelda was the first for NES(not totally sure), but it's one of the least acclaimed of the Zeldas today. I think Halo is huge, but it's a momentum thing and not everyone can play it, eventually the mass Halo consumer will fade away from Halo but they will not fade away from Zelda. They may not buy all the games but they'll always have a heart for it. While Halo consumers will be purchasing all Halo games until they eventually don't need it anymore, the fact alone that it's so huge right now, perhaps bigger in awareness than it actually is in sales maybe already be a sign of that.

I don't think Halo 2 was half baked. It was delayed for a year and was pretty polished for the final product. Halo 3 will probably not make it to PS3's launch. I could see it as Microsoft's answer to MGS4 which seems to be coming out at 2007 (GT5 will probably be coming out that year too) but not for launch. I'd much rather see PDZ by the PS3 launch title. If Gates doesn't want the key franchise fucked up, he's going to let Halo 3 come out when Bungie is good n' ready. Maybe they will have it out that soon and have it be what Bungie wanted.
 
I thought Halo2 was the better game, but it definately felt like it was cut short. Like I was playing it, and all the sudden there were credits rolling. After the awesome last level in Halo 1, I was pretty dissapointed.

I really do hold out hope that PDZero will shine at E3. There's basically nothing holding me back from buying an X360 besides software. If it's backwards compatible and they've got killer software, they've already got a customer right here.

IMHO I think Moore is the smarter one here

I think it would be a bad idea to rush Halo 3 out the door just to fight PS3 sales

they seemed to rush Halo 2 out the door and there was a backlash from it from a good many Halo fans, and I think doing it again with Halo 3 is only going to piss them off even more and hurt your series

but if Gates want's it released against the PS3 that's when it'll be released regardless of how finished it is or isn't
 
While Moore might be thinking more clearly, its Gates that pushes the buttons ultimately, even though he is just "chief software architect".
