GBA FF4 and other screenshots from NoA press summit

FF4:

-Seems like they kept the pseudo-3D airship view from Dawn of Souls. Yay.
-Either my memory is fuzzy or that Palom map sprite looks a bit different from before.
-I had no clue an Alligator had that many item drops. o_O
-Err... How are enemies "Lords"?
-Ramuh's attack has a name. Good.
-Meh, I still prefer Ice 3, Cure 2, etc. Oh well...
-DARK WAVE! And some prayer ability from Rosa that I'm guessing was in the Japanese version, was removed from other versions, and that didn't have as much infamy as Dark Wave, thus leading to my never hearing about it before now.
-Quicksave is the equivalent of Suspend, I presume.
-I like the tweaked faces, except for Kain's.
-I'm not too fond of the font.

Dr. Mario/Puzzle League:
Unless I'm mistaken, they're not using the SNES Dr. Mario graphics. I wonder why not?

Drill Dozer:
I have yet to figure out whether the screenshots make me interested or not. I may end up picking it up just because it's by the company that makes Pokemon.

??

He looks fine. Different, but not worse for wear -- everybody got improved headshots, if you notice the main menu screen.

Better yet, pick it up because it's a fun, original, and inventive platformer thoroughly in the spirit of Treasure's games.

Treasure? As in the company that made Mischief Makers?
I think I'm sold if it's a game in that vein.

Is it just me, or does Yang's headshot look really, really bad? Everything else looks fucking fantastic though, much better than I'd been hoping. I can't even wait for VI to hit.

I'm curious - If you play this game (FFIV) on a Gameboy Player for the first time would you say it's as good as the best PS2 RPGs? I mean are most of you excited by this because of nostalgia or because the game is good enough for a 'handhelds' game, just to play on the bus or whatever?

I'm just 40 minutes in FFIV (playing chronicles on PS2) and a bit disappointed after all the hype. yeah I know it's only the beginning, I guess it's mostly because my first FF game was IX and it started out great (3D and awesome environments helped too...).

I'm asking that question just to get an idea on what to expect for the rest of the game.

Heh. No offense (I know Mischief Makers was supposed to be good), but that's the first time I've heard Treasure identified by that game, as opposed to, say, Gunstar Heroes or Radiant Silvergun.

I'm glad that it's Hard Type. No silly censorship at the beginning hooray.

And all these silly people complaining about the font.. it's the same damn font that was used in Dawn of Souls.

All's we needed to fill in the stupidity of the thread was isamu complaining about FFIII not being on GBA and he already achieved that.

The music in that video sounds really well-done. Some of the pieces are identical to the SNES versions in samples and number of samples, while a couple are a little different (the first chocobo song actually has more instruments in the arrangement, and the second one has some different samples). The main battle theme has a different sample for the lead trumpet, has more voices used for the lead, and MUCH better drums. Same goes for the boss battle theme. Sound effects are *perfect* and seem to be enhanced here and there. I LOVE hearing the GBA finally sounding GOOD!

All battle sprites look cleaned-up and much better, but with about the same amount of animation. Battle backgrounds are spectacular, and field backgrounds are really nice. I like how they use scaled sprites for cities on the fake Mode 7 map.

I like the way things are heading with this. :)

Okay, someone clarify for me please... I know that the SNES FFII and FFIII weren't II and III in Japan. The FFIII that is coming to the DS is which game? What 'bout the FFIV on GBA?

FFIV in Japan = FF 2 in US = FFIV GBA
FFVI in Japan = FF 3 in US = FFVI GBA
FFIII in Japan was never released in the US. DS version is the first remake.

40 minutes man! Give the game some time. FFIV is my favorite FF of all, it has a great story. I think you will be quite fond of Cecil by the end.

I'm really not too familiar with most modern RPGs to make a fair comparison, but the ones I have played were honestly not as fun or charming as most 8 or 16-bit ones I played.

Final Fantasy III is brand new in a sense, it has *never* touched American shores except via fan-translation and emulation

It was available on the NES.

You've never played it. But it's good. Very good.

Final Fantasy IV is Final Fantasy II here in America, on SNES, along with Final Fantasy Chronicles for PSX, which it was labeled under the Final Fantasy IV name

Yes.

Sounds like it. Doesn't sound too downsampled from the originals. Nice work, Square.

So whats the word on FF4, this title has never been released on its own in the US?
?

It was released as FF2 on the SNES. Sheech there's a bazillion websites dedicated to FF, there's is no excuse for people to still be asking these questions.

It's definitely simpler. I'd rather you'd have said "best PSX RPGs". Then I'd have outright laughed at you for asking.

Mostly, yes.

Eh, Mischief Makers was the first game I knew from Treasure because the N64 era was right where I started to get into actually KNOWING things about games, instead of just blindly playing them like before... it's not what I associate Treasure with today, but it's still one of the first things that comes to mind.. :D

That's the answer I was expecting. But this:

Confuses me.. kind of. So you're telling me that even with its simple graphics and gameplay FFIV is so good you would've preferred it to many of the best PSX RPGs?

That definitely puts it back on my list - I was thinking of just playing another game instead and waiting for it on GBA. I was planning to play Chrono Trigger too so I might as well finish this now, it's a short game I hear anyway.

No no no. As if. Other way around. I was saying PSX RPGs are indisputably superior, but that some might convincingly argue that FFIV could hold its own against PS2 RPGs.

Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger are indisputably three of the best RPGs of all time. On any system.
